Daddy’s No Santa!
By: Irving Green & Edelma Zuniga
(GLORIA is seen moving about the kitchen, preparing a Christmas salad she is heard humming Silent Night)
DAVID: (Offstage) Gloria, I’m home dear!
(Gloria brushes herself off and fixes her hair)
DAVID: (Walking in) Wow, the weather is crazy out there! Its freezing cold!
GLORIA: Well, its Christmas Eve dear! Have a little spirit. (kisses David on the check)
DAVID: At least the kids will have a good Christmas.
GLORIA: There we go! I’ll help you unload the presents.
(Silence)
DAVID: Unload? Oh, you mean get the presents out of the closet and wrap them up! We can do that later on, I’m tired.
Gloria: Noooo, I meant that I’ll help you get the presents you brought on your way home from work, out of the car…
(Silence)
David: But I left a note on the fridge saying that I couldn’t!
Gloria: YOU MEAN THIS FRIDGE?! (She points to the fridge with hundreds of sticky notes on it) Besides I told you last night to do it!
DAVID: But I work!
GLORIA: But I cook, and clean, and iron, and wash…should I go on?
DAVID: Well, what are we going to do? The kids are expecting “Santa” to bring them present!
GLORIA: What are WE going to do? What are YOU going to do? I can’t believe this! I should never have trusted you!
(They continue arguing in silence. The lights fade and Gloria’s sister, Sandra, enters the stage. Spotlight is on her.)
SANDRA: Oh great, there at it again! I knew that this marriage wouldn’t work. I told her that she should of stayed with Pablo….He didn’t have his green card but he brought in some free tomatoes. I wonder what happen to him? OH YEA! He got deported…I forgot.
(While Sandra is saying this she walks over to the table and places down the plate of food she brought.)
DAVID: It’s not about the present! It’s about the lo---(realizes the Pablo discussion) wait, who’s Pablo?
