“You’re what?!” Mark exclaimed quietly.
“I’m pregnant,” Bella said her tone more calm now. “I’m fucking pregnant!”
Mark just watched her. It must have taken a lot of guts to come in here, he thought.
Bella took a deep breath. “Phew! I’m glad that’s over. Now that you know, I’m going to leave.” She started for the door, but was stopped by Mark’s hand over her shoulder.
“You’re just going to leave? With my kid that I know nothing about? When are you due? Is it a boy or girl?” Mark demanded, throwing questions at her like darts on a dart board.
“Well, I don’t know any of that,” Bella lied sheepishly. “I’ve gotta go.” She turned again and tried to leave. Mark stopped her again. “Don’t think that I’m not going to be a part of this baby’s life. This baby is mine,” Mark hollered.
Bella began to cower and Mark took her in his arms. “I can’t believe I’m going to be a daddy,” he smiled to himself. Bella tried to keep herself from looking up into those light gray eyes and kissing those lips of his. As if he knew what she was thinking, he kissed her on the forehead and said, “When is your next appointment?”
“Monday,” she replied confused. “Why?”
“Because I’m coming with you,” Mark began explaining. “We’ll have to start planning the wedding as soon as possible,” he said walking back to his desk.
“Wedding?” Bella screeched. “What on earth are you talking about?”
“We have to get married,” Mark instructed. “You and I both know we live in quite the old fashioned town, and if they see that we have a baby and we’re not married, both of our reputations will be ruined.”
Bella agreed but didn’t want to say it aloud. “But, I was just telling you, you’re not going to be a part of the baby’s life,” she explained. “I just thought you would want to know.”
“Well I want more than just that,” Mark said. He got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?”
“NO!” Bella screamed. “I can’t marry you, Mark Vandenbush! You’re the most controlling man I know and I hate you! Just leave me alone.”
Mark stood and looked at her. “You didn’t say that when we were in bed two months ago,” he said with a smirk.
Bella threw her purse at him and began crying. “What am I going to do?” she sobbed, talking to herself more than talking to Mark. “I can’t do this by myself.”
Mark walked to her and rubbed her back, taking her into his strong embrace. “Shhh,” he consoled her. “I’ll help you. Don’t worry.”
