Global Deforestation
Rain forests have a major effect in all of the functions on our planet Earth. Tropical rain forests contain roughly 50 percent of the worlds species. It also contributes to the maintenance of atmospheric gases, the consistency of rainfall, shielding against desertification, and other ecological roles. And yet, we still continue to devoir the forest internationally. This is why global deforestation should be held to a minimum for all of the inhabitants that occupy the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), deforestation is “the conversion of forest to another land use or the long-term reduction of the tree canopy cover below the 10 percent threshold.” But other organizations have different definitions of deforestation. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) uses 40 percent cover as the threshold for "closed forests" and 10-40 percent cover for "open forests," while the Tropical Ecosystem Environment Observations by Satellite (TREES) project—funded in the 1990s by the European Commission—classifies areas with more than 70 percent canopy cover as "dense forests" and those with 40-70 percent cover as "fragmented forest."according to Mongabay.com.
Animals in an environment depend on every single thing to help continue it’s way of life, whether it’s the trees, or the other wild life. Taking away one tree is like taking away one home, if not more. According to Mongabay.com, 80,000 square feet of forest is cut a day. A DAY! And another 80,000 square feet is degraded! An acre equals 43,560 feet, so just imagine, two acres of the precise rain forest disappearing every single day for a year. Globally, more than 700 acres of the forest is demolished every single year. Consequently, more and more species continue to become extinct, many of them not even found by science yet. We are destroying something before we even give it a chance to live.
If countries are aware that they are cutting down valuable material, wouldn’t they at least decrease what they are doing? You would think so, but this is not the case. To the contrary, deforestation is at an increase in many countries. Analysis of figures from the Food and Agriculture Organization and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report that tropical deforestation increased 8.5 percent from 2000-2005 compared with the 1990's, and primary forests loss may have expanded 25 percent. Those numbers are an outrage! And it’s not just one primary continent or country, there’s a variety of different countries that contribute to this monestrous act. Once again, according to the FAO, Nigeria and Vietnam’s rate of primary forest loss has doubled since the 1990's, while Peru’s rate has triple! From 1990-2000, FAO estimates that 10.16 million hectares (10000 square metres) of forest was lost globally each year, and has increased from 2000-2005 to 10.4 million hectares. Deforestation has been expanding in North America, Europe and Asia, while also killing off the tropics. The main source of all this global deforestation is mainly from industrial logging, conversion of agriculture, and forest fires (often set purposely by people). Since logging does not fall under the 10 percent threshold as I mentioned in the beginning paragraph, logging deforestation isn’t even considered in any of the above statistics. So forest degrading rates are considerably higher than deforestation.
Global warming is a major topic when it comes to how we are destroying our planet. But sending harmful gases into the air, and creating a greenhouse effect isn’t the only way we are causing global warming. Deforestation is also a major contributor to what we have done to the ozone. According to Mongabay.com, unlike burning fossil fuels, the outcome of the act of deforestation brings more carbon into the air, and the climate is further altered. The NASA Web Site reports that deforestation is the second principle cause of atmospheric carbon dioxide. 20-25% of all CO2 entering Earth’s atmosphere is due global deforestation. According to EcoBridge.org, we lose 34 million acres of forests each year, which is about the size of Italy. We do not have enough of the rain forest to be cutting down around Italy’s size each year! EcoBridge.org also informs us that the destroying of tropical forests alone is throwing hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. We are also losing temperate forests. The temperate forests of the world account for an absorption rate of 2 billion tons of carbon annually. The temperate forests in Siberia alone lose 10 million acres of forests annually.
If every country would chip in and do it’s part for the environment, not only would a vast amount of species be saved, but also the Earth as a whole would become a more stable place to live. If the rates do not do the opposite of what they are doing now, our planet that we know as Earth will become a place we no longer wish to live. Humanity as we know it, can end. I’m not saying stop deforestation right now, but what I am saying is I would like to see within the next 5 years an attempt to reduce it. And within the next 50 years try to stop it as a whole. It needs to be done for the next generation, or we just pile our problems onto them.----------Andre Andrini

Outline
Thesis: Global deforestation should be held to a minimum for all of the inhabitants that occupy the environment.
Support #1: The more the world tears down the forest, the more harm it does to the animals
Support #2: The rate of deforestation is rising, and no one is making an attempt to slow it down
Support #3: Rain Forests help maintain the gases in the atmosphere
Conclusion: If every country would chip in and do it’s part for the environment, not only would a vast amount of species be saved, but also the Earth as a whole would become a more stable place to live.--------Work Cited
