Mary's thoughts were clouded that night. After finding out that Jenny had let it slip to her parents that they were dating, she didn't know what to think. At first she thought that Jenny had done it deliberately, to pull them apart. But as she lay in bed listening to her love crying, and the tears rolled down her own face, she knew it wasn't true.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~EARLIER~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 

After watching the ball drop, and holding hands secretly under a blanket on the love seat, the two of them went down the hall to Mary's room to watch some T.V. and to be alone.

Mary's mother, Carol, opened her bedroom door, and with a look of disgust on her face, at Mary and Jenny cuddling under the covers, bade them goodnight, and insisted that the two sleep in separate beds, "I mean it!" she said, slamming the door behind her.

"I should go sleep in the other bed." Jenny said to Mary, as they lay on Mary's bed, falling sleep in each others arms.
"No. She'll never know Jenny...Please stay." As Mary's arms wrapped tighter around Jenny's waist.
"I have to."  Jenny said, wiping a few tears away from her eyes and climbing out of bed.

She couldn't help it, as  Jenny's body began to rack with sobs Mary got up out of her bed and knelt by the bed that Jenny lay in. 

"Jenny...baby, look at me, please." Mary's hands searched for Jenny's as Jenny wearily rolled over to look at Mary.

"Baby, what's wrong?" Mary's eyes held concern for her lover.

"I...I cut." Jenny's eyes met Mary's gaze as she held out her arm to show her love.

"Oh, baby..." Mary kissed Jenny's arm as tears began to form behind her eyes.

"It's okay baby." Mary reassured Jenny and placed a kiss on her forehead.

"okay..." Jenny managed to whisper as a wave of exhaustion swept over her.

"You should go back to your bed Mary." Jenny didn't want her to leave her side, but she knew that she had to follow the rules.

Jenny's tears turned to whimpers and hiccups as she lay in the cold bed that was only a few feet from Mary's, but the distance seemed oceans apart, and it was unbearable.

"Mary..." She whispered across the room.
"Yes." came a whispered response.
"No matter what happens, I promise that we'll be together forever. We'll get through this...okay?"
"okay. I love you Jenny."
"I love you too Mary."

Jenny's words were the only thing that seemed to comfort Mary that night, the one thing that was floating through her mind, and rocking her to sleep.
