Lydia woke up to find herself still tightly in Sam’s arms just as she had been when she had fallen asleep. Her eyes were sore from crying all night, but she was no longer as exhausted. She felt neither happy nor sad, just there; like she wasn’t alive, like she wasn’t herself, as if she was just going through the actions of living, but not really living them.
She laid there for a long time, not wanting to wake Sam up. Her thoughts ran through her head faster than she could figure them out. She was about to get up, when it came to her. She had to talk to Death. She had to find Enphinious and talk to him: but how?
The only time he came out was when someone was going to die. So how could she lure him out into the open unless she was going to die? Just then Sam opened his eyes and pulled his arms away, stretching them out and yawning loudly. He looked over at Lydia who was staring back at him and smiled.
“Good morning. Sleep well?” He asked quietly and cleared his throat after yawning again.
“I slept okay.” She answered automatically, still thinking about how to get Enphinious out. “How did you sleep??”
“I slept pretty well.” He smiled again and sat up, stretching his back and arms. His shirt still had a small wet spot on it and Lydia suddenly felt sorry for crying on him for so long, yet all she wanted to do was to do it again.
“Do you know how I could talk to Enphinious?” Sam stared at her as she said it, shocked.
“What?” He demanded.
“I need to talk to Enphinious.” She replied coolly.
“But-“
“Sam! Could you just help me?”
“You would have to trick him into thinking you were going to die.” Sam finally replied.
“Hmm… That sounds alright. I think I can do that.” Lydia said back to him, the ideas already soaring through her mind.
“Lydia, please don’t.” Sam’s begging voice interrupted her train of thought. “If Death thinks you are going to die, he might just kill you anyways. He might not make any exceptions. Lydia, you might die anyways: whether you were just tricking him or not.”
“But, Sam, how am I supposed to live like this? I lost my husband and my child!” Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she didn’t notice.
“Lydia, you have me and Emily. We’ll take care of you.”
“What if that’s not enough? What if I need more?” She screamed and stomped out of the room leaving Sam alone. It was nice outside, the morning sun was held up over the neighbor’s house, shining down brightly on Lydia. A cool breeze kept the temperature a perfect seventy-eight and small clouds floated around in the sky.
Lydia walked down the sidewalk and around the block, thinking to herself about what she had said to Sam. When she entered the house, after she had gotten home, Sam was sitting on the living room floor, Emily at his side.
“Did you have a nice walk?” He said blandly without looking up.
“Yes.” Lydia replied and leaned against the wall of the living room. Anger filled the room and Lydia could tell that even Emily could feel it. She was silent too as she chewed on a small purple giraffe that she had in her hands. Lydia tightened her hands into fists as she waited for someone to speak and break the awkward silence.
“What do I have to do to make you happy with me again?” Sam finally said after ten minutes of the silence.
“Help me.” Lydia’s reply was simple, yet her voice was strong.
“But, Lydia, don’t you realize how bad an-“
“I don’t care! If you want me happy with you, you’re going to have to help me! It’s as simple as that. I’ll be in the kitchen if you want me.” She stomped past Sam towards the kitchen, but felt his hand on her shoulder before she had made it there.
“I’ll help you.” He whispered into her ear. Lydia could feel his breath running along her ear and down her neck.
“Thank you.” She whispered back, still frozen to the spot.
“No problem.” He replied as he kissed her neck and she smiled in response. She turned around and he began making out with her immediately.
“Sam.” Lydia started between kisses, “I… really think that… we should… stop because… we need to plan… for…” Sam forced her to stop by kissing her deeper and pulling her closer to him. His hands were wrapped around her and held at the small of her back and the bodies were pressed together tightly.
“Shh…” Was all he said before beginning to kiss her once again.
“But… Sam… we really… should.” Sam pulled away and sighed as she finished. He let his hands drop to his sides and stared down at the blue carpet of the floor.
“Sorry.” He said quietly.
“Don’t be sorry.”
“Sheryl!” He shouted suddenly and Lydia raised her eyebrows in confusion. Quickly, Lydia turned on her heel to look around the room. There in the far corner, next to the back door, was a tall woman. She was beautiful; she had long wavy brown hair that went down to her waist, chocolate brown eyes, and a warm smile full of bright white teeth. Her body was thin and curved and she wore a blue tank top and jean shorts.
“So, is this your new toy?” She question, walking almost catlike into the room. “What are you going to do to this one?” She laughed as if something hysterical had just been said and Lydia just stayed watching in amazement.
“How did you find us?” Sam said quickly, backing away so he could block the door to Emily’s room.
“Believe me Samuel, you’re not that hard to find.” She smirked and kept walking towards him, closer and closer.
“We have a restraining order against you! You shouldn’t be here!” Sam shouted; his voice shaky.
“Do you think the cops could actually stop me?” She laughed again and stopped in front of Sam.
“Emily’s mine. Please just leave her alone.” He begged, her piercing eyes staring down at him. Lydia couldn’t move; her body seemed frozen to the spot as she watched the scene play out. Suddenly it came to her; she ran to the phone and called the police as quickly and quietly as she could.
She told them what was going on and they said they were coming. As she ran back in she heard Sheryl screaming loudly.
“EMILY IS MINE! SHE DOESN’T BELONG TO YOU. SHE CAME OUT OF ME! SHE IS ME! GIVE HER BACK NOW OR I WILL TAKE HER BY FORCE!”
