Lydia lay down in the big bed alone. Sam had fallen asleep on the couch while they were watching movies earlier. The picture of Enphinious was lying on the nightstand next to her. She had long since laid it down so she could take her mind off it, though it didn’t work much.
It was a long time, Lydia guessed hours, until she finally fell asleep. And even when she did, she was restless throughout the night. She awoke the next morning feeling exhausted. Sam was sleeping next to her. Hmm… he must have got up and come to be in the middle of the night. She thought to herself, he looks so peaceful. I don’t want to wake him.
And he did. His face was pale in the sunlight streaming through the blinds. His black hair was tousled and thrown all around his face and pillow and his eyes were clean of all eyeliner or makeup. He wasn’t wearing anything except a pair of black pants and the blanket was wrapped around his chest as if he had been rolling around a lot. She smiled at the view and he suddenly began to open his eyes.
“I didn’t mean to wake you.” Lydia whispered as quietly as she could, but didn’t take her eyes off him. He sat up, looking suddenly awake, and gave Lydia a weak smile.
“I wasn’t asleep, just lying there thinking. I could feel your eyes on me.” Sam gave a meek laugh and watched Lydia carefully, as if avoiding a certain subject. Lydia stared back at him, one eyebrow raised.
“What were you thinking about?” Sam sighed and Lydia knew this was what he was trying to avoid.
“You.” His answer was simple enough, she didn’t get why he seemed so upset about it though.
“What were you thinking about me?”
“Well, you and Joey.” He sighed again and looked up at her.
“W-“ She thought to herself a moment before continuing, “What about us?” Her voice was nervous, but she couldn’t help it.
“I’m worried about you; very worried. Not really Joey as much as you, but still him.” He rambled on and Lydia got more and more anxious.
“Sam, get to the point!” Lydia said loudly, her hands no shaking with nerves and frustration.
“Lydia,” he set his hand on hers and sighed once more, “Joey’s going to die this evening.”
Silence filled the room and Lydia had nothing to say. Her thoughts screamed ‘No!’ And her heart screamed ‘Yes.’ But she loved Joey so much and now he was going to die. She hadn’t spent enough time with him yet, hadn’t kissed him enough, and hadn’t told him ‘I love you’ enough. Now it was going to be all over.
“No!” She finally screamed and stood up, running out of the room and to the hallway where she fell to the floor against the wall. She pulled herself into a little ball and held herself as she cried. How could I have done this to him? I shouldn’t have ever talked to Sam. I shouldn’t have urged him to drive on the way home from the hospital. I shouldn’t have fallen in love with him. Now he’s going to die. It’s my entire fault, all my fault. Her thoughts scrambled.
She couldn’t breathe, her lungs were tangled together in her throat and her heart had sunk so low she could feel it in her stomach. Standing up she ran to the bathroom just in time as she got sick into the toilet more than once, until she passed out against the bathtub.
*****
She awoke to a low rumbling sound, but was unable to place it. She slowly opened her eyes and found Sam sitting next to her, holding her up. She tried to open her mouth to talk, but couldn’t force anything out.
“Lydia, it’s okay. Are you alright?” Lydia looked around; they were still in the bathroom. The smell of what had happened overcame her and she quickly stood up and ran out of the room into the hallway to take a deep breath as she looked around. Sam followed, clinging on to her hand.
“What time is it?” She whispered, her voice sounding weak. Sam looked at his watch and back at her.
“It’s only ten.” He tried to smile, but it didn’t seem to work out well. Lydia nodded and walked down the hallway towards the bedroom where she laid down and stared up at the ceiling.
“Is there anyway I can save him?” She whispered.
“I’ve tried. When it’s someone’s time, death knows. He doesn’t let up.” Sam whispered back and Lydia knew he felt bad.
“No.” She whispered, a sense of longing held in her voice.
“Lydia…” Sam sighed and rolled over, pulling her closer to him. She let him without resistance as he hugged her tightly and she stayed just staring forward, unable to move. A loud cry filled the room and Sam got up and left the room silently.
A few minutes later he was walking back in. Lydia was still lying in the same spot. He sat Emily down next to her and lay down on his side. She turned and saw Emily smiling at her and couldn’t help but smile back. Even through the tears running down her cheeks she couldn’t help it. She could see through the corner of her eye that Sam was smiling too, just because she was. And she liked that.
The day passed slowly. Lydia stayed in bed most of the time, only getting up to use the restroom and the time when Sam forced her to eat lunch. Emily stayed in bed with her, she seemed to enjoy the attention and Sam knew that she would cheer her up. Sam didn’t have to work today so he was there most of the time, but he left to get groceries for awhile after asking twenty times whether Lydia would be okay or not.
Lydia’s cell phone began to ring at around six that evening. Sam and Lydia sat staring at it for the first five or six rings until finally she picked it up. She was scared out of her mind; she knew what this call was about as well as Sam did.
“Hello?” Her voice still sounded weak.
“Hello, this is Hope’s Roses Medical Center. Is this Lydia Andrews?” A woman’s voice came through the other line. She sounded so professional and happy.
“Yes, this is her.”
“Lydia, I have some bad news for you about your husband Joey. I hate to deliver this news over the phone, but – well – we might as well get it over with.”
“What is it?” Lydia asked, even though she already knew the answer.
“He passed away at five-thirty.” She paused for a moment, “I’m so sorry.”
“Okay.”
“If there’s anything we can do, just ask for Lucy.”
“Okay, thanks.”
“Again I’m sorry.”
“Thanks.”
“Goodbye.”
“Bye.” She hung up the phone quickly, tears running down her cheeks. She knew this would happen, but it just made it all worse. She knew she should have went and saw him, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Sam leaned over and hugged her, and she fell into his arms, crying harder than she had earlier.
