“Wow, that’s just as bad. I can’t imagine what that must ‘a felt like. What ‘bout your husband?” Her country accent slurred her words together until they came out of her mouth like mud.

“He’s in a coma. Doctors say he won’t wake up again.” She replied, her voice going high as she forced down the tears, anger, sadness, frustration, and annoyance that were all begging to come up at once.

“Oh. I see. Well, you didn’t come here to stand ‘round and talk, let’s get ya’ll seated.” Marie pointed to two seating table at the backend of the restaurant. The table and chairs were made of a dark colour of wood and not all the legs touched the ground. Lydia was almost afraid to sit there, let alone to have food sit on the unsteady table. She laughed a hearty loud noise as she saw the look on Lydia’s face.

“’S alright, it won’t break on you.” She laughed again heartily and took out a pad of paper from her grease stained apron. “What would you two like to drink?”

“Pepsi for me.” Samuel said. His voice startled Lydia for a moment as he had been so quiet for so long.

“Same here.” Marie nodded and scribbled a few letters Lydia guessed stood for what they ordered and turned around, wobbling back towards the counter at the other side of the restaurant where Pop was drying cups with a white washrag. She whispered something in his ear while pointing over at Lydia and Samuel before going to the pop machine and starting to get them their drinks.

“Hello?” Lydia heard Samuel say. “Anyone in there?” He laughed and watched her expressions changing.

“Sorry, did you say something?” He nodded.

“Look at the menu, get whatever you like. It’s on me.” Samuel said, staring up at her and deep into her green eyes before sliding the only menu across the table to her.

“Don’t you need to look at it?” He shook his head no, “well, I don’t want to make you pay for me. You barely know me, and you don’t have much money.” He rolled his eyes and smiled.

“Besides the fact that I get a deal here, you’re a lady and you shouldn’t have to pay at all. So stop complaining and pick your food.” He laughed as Marie walked back over to them with their drinks. She set them on the table in front of them and threw two straws down.

“Ready to order yet?” Marie asked in an almost dull voice compared to what she had sounded like only moments before. Samuel nodded and laughed.

“You know it!” He sounded ecstatic. She smiled and wrote something on the paper she was holding.

“And you, Lydia?” Marie asked her, staring down at the menu as if she had never seen it before. Lydia looked up at her quickly.

“Oh. Sorry. I’ll have um…” She looked back down at the menu and studied it a moment more, “I’ll have Pop’s Famous Burger with cheese and lettuce and hash browns.” Marie scribbled it down on her paper and wobbled back towards the counter.

“Those are good. Good choice.” Samuel smiled at her.

“I take it you come here quite often.”

“Yeah, every day.” He laughed loudly. Lydia stared up at him, his dark blue eyes reaching deep inside of hers trying to find there way to her very soul. She turned away quickly, stopping them.

“So tell me more about yourself.” She said quietly, still not looking at him. Samuel raised an eyebrow and stared at her.

“Well, first tell me, why won’t you look at me?” He tapped her forearm and she shut her eyes momentarily before staring back into his.

“Sorry, just- I don’t know. Don’t worry about it, I’m looking at you now aren’t I?” She smiled trying to pull off the pun and to her surprise he smiled back.

“Okay. So what would you like to know about me then?” He glanced over at the counter and checked his watch before looking back up at her and waiting for her reply.

“I don’t know, everything, anything.” She laughed, “I just needed to ask something and, well, that was a good one I thought.” He laughed along with her and nodded his head in agreement.

“Yeah, well I’ll tell you some stuff then.” His lips scrunched up and he stared towards the ceiling making him look like he was thinking really hard. She giggled at the sight of his face which made him beam in pleasure. “Well, I’m single. I have my baby girl, Emily. I spend most of my time with her when I’m not at work. I work at Wal-Mart. Yeah I know, not a great job but it’s all I could get at the time, with paying for Emily’s babysitter and everything.” An idea popped into Lydia’s head quicker than she had thought possible.

“When Emily gets out of the hospital. If you want, I will baby sit her, it will save you money and, well, I’ll have someone to be around during the day. It gets so lonely sitting by Joey all day.” She replied before realizing he didn’t know who Joey was. “Oh, Joey’s my husband sorry.”

“I guessed, don’t worry. And wow, you would really do that?” He was completely shocked.

“Yeah” She nodded, “I’d love to Samuel.”

“Oh please, call me Sam.”

“How about Sammy, it’s cuter?” She laughed as she said it, she had only been joking anyways, but he seemed to like it. His cheeks flushed a bright pink and he smiled widely at her.

“I like it. I don’t mind you calling me-“ He was cut off as Marie came back to the table with their food. He nodded and said thanks and she asked if there was anything else they wanted, which was a no of course, and left, waddling back to the counter.

“As I was saying, I don’t mind Sammy.” He blushed again and stared over at her.

“Good. I like it too so.” She took a gulp of her drink and swallowed hard.

“So anything else you’d like to know about me or is it my turn yet?”

“What happened between you and Emily’s mom?”

“Sheryl?” Lydia took a bite out of her hamburger and nodded. “Well, she had Emily and I guess she thought it was too much for her and she left. But then she came back wanting Emily back after a few months and I just couldn’t give her up. She’s my world you know? So we traveled here, after Sheryl had broken into our house three times and kidnapped Emily once.” He sighed loudly and stared at Lydia who was chewing her burger. She swallowed what she had in her mouth and put on her most sincere look.

“I’m sorry.” She said quietly. He forced a smile and nodded towards her as if asking something that she wasn’t sure about.

“Tell me about you.”
