Not a very short story featuring a cat and a girl

“No Lucy! For the fiftieth time, you can’t have a dog! They’re too messy and make far too much noise!”
“But mum!” Lucy cried.
“No buts!”
“Fine, can I have a different pet then?”
“Fine, but it’s your responsibility.”
“Fine.”
When they got to the pet shop, Lucy could see a little girl walking out with the cutest puppy she had ever seen. It wasn’t fair, she thought. Nikki had a dog and it didn’t cause any trouble at all. But as soon as she stepped into the pet shop, she changed her mind about wanting a dog. Sure, they were cute and everything but look at all those other pets. There were birds, fish, cats, rabbits and so much more!
Lucy went over to look at the birds first. There was a particular one that she liked which had light blue feathers and purple wings. Next were the fish. Nah, she thought, they’re too boring cos you can’t do anything with them.
After Lucy had looked at most of the pets, she came across a cage that had three of the most adorable cats
she had ever seen. One was white with black stripes and the other two were black.
“Mum! I want this one! Look! It’s so cute!” she said excitedly. “Can I have it? Please!?” she begged. Her mum looked at the cats. “I suppose so, she replied.
“A shop assistant came over. “I’m guessing she wants a cat,” he said. “Which of the three do you prefer?”
“I want the white one with black stripes. Please,” Lucy quickly added after a look from her mum.
After her mum had spoken to the shop assistant for about half an hour about when to feed the cat and stuff like that, Lucy finally walked out with a pet of her own.
In the car, Lucy was trying to think of names for her cat. It had to be special and original unlike Tom or something like that. Besides, it was a girl so why would she call her Tom in the first place? Which also made her remember something else too. Lucy turned to the cat and said “Oh, how rude of me! I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Lucy,” and shook the cat’s paw but it pulled away.
Just as they stepped through the door, she thought of the best name ever. “Ah ha!” Lucy said. “Kyrah!”
“That’s a very nice name.” her mum said. “Since when have you started coming up with good names? I remembered when you first got your fish, you couldn’t decide what to call it. You sat there for an hour and finally came up with Pipe cleaner.”
Lucy blushed. “Mum! I was only two at the time!” she protested. “No, you were six!”
“Actually I think I was four…. fine six, but I just turned six.
I Got it for my birthday. I remembered because it jumped out of my hands into my cake and I dived in after it.
“It didn’t even get to survive a whole day after you got it!”
“Yeah, only cos I squished it when I jumped onto it. Oh yeah, and my cake too. It was a sad day for Pipe cleaner and my cake.”
“It would be a sad day for Kyrah too if I’m not saying this right now.”
“What?”
“In other words, Kyrah escaped.”
“AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!”
“Don’t dive on top of her this time because you’re not getting another pet! Lucy ignored the comment and ran off to find Kyrah.
After 5 minutes of searching, Lucy finally found her on the windowsill. “There you are,” Lucy said. “Do you know how long I’ve been looking for you?”
“I know!” her mum said. “Five minutes!”
“Mum! You’re ruining the moment, and anyway, I wasn’t even asking you.”
“Well it was 5 minutes. And what did you expect, for Kyrah t0o answer you back?”
“Well, whatever.”
“Lucy, just because you got a cat doesn’t mean you’re excused from tidying your room. I told you to do it two weeks ago.”
“Oh, fine.”
Lucy went up to her room with Kyrah following behind her. It was a mess. Clothes were lying around everywhere and all the books and other random stuff were on the floor. Well, it wasn’t going to pack itself up so she better start somewhere.
First, she went over to the pile of books and put them on her bookshelf or in her bag for school. Second, Lucy picked up all the dirty clothes and chucked them in pile. The clean clothes she shoved back into her cupboard. Then last of all, she put all the other random bits and pieces back into her drawers and cupboards or on her desk. It wasn’t a very good job but at least everything was packed away and out of site. By the time she finished, it was time for dinner so she called it a day.
After dinner, Lucy went up to her room to get Kyrah to give her her dinner but she couldn’t find her. “Mum!” she called. “Do you know where Kyrah is? She’s not in my room.”
“See! You shouldn’t be looking after pets. You’ve lost her twice already!”
“Mum, do you know how hard it is to look after someone who really needs looking after?”
“Yes, I do” her mum replied.
“Ok then, what was it?”
“You, who else? Oh, and your dad too.
“Back to the subject: WHERE IS MY CAT?”
“How would I know? I’ve got enough things to deal with at the moment.”
“I’m not even going to ask what…”
The next day, Lucy still couldn’t find Kyrah. She was almost in tears so the cheer herself up, she decided to go on the computer and chat to her friends. It took forever to load so when it finally did, she realised she had an email from school. On no! I’m in trouble! Lucy thought. She read it. Phew! I’m not in trouble after all. It was from the principle George saying that she and her two best friends Nikki and Abby had been sent on a secret mission to defeat an evil genius trying to take over the world and turn everyone into slaves that worked for him.
Lucy got all her secret spy gear and raced over to Nikki’s house. “I thought you were still looking for Kyrah!” her mum yelled after her. “Umm, yeah! I’m looking for her at Nikki’s place.”
“Okay then…”
As Lucy ran out of the door, she heard her mum muttering to herself saying “What on earth?”
As soon as Lucy reached Nikki’s house, she ran through the front door which was open because Nikki’s mum was getting the newspaper. “Hi Lucy, here so early?”
“Hi Sharon, no time to talk, got to go, emergency!”
“What, going so soon?”
“No! I meant I got to go talk to Nikki!”
“Sorry Lucy, she already left. She went to Abby’s place.”
“Ok, thanks,” Lucy replied as she ran off, this time to Abby’s house.
Nikki was sitting on he bed and Abby was sitting cross legged on the floor when Lucy came bursting in. “Guys! Have you gotten a-“
“Yes, we have,” Abby cut in.
“This is strange,” Nikki said. “We’re the only ones being sent on this mission.”
“Yeah, I know,” Lucy said. “Even worse news though is that I just got a cat yesterday and it ran away!”
“Oh, you poor thing,” Nikki said sympathetically. “If I lost my dog, I’d probably jump off a bridge because I couldn’t live without him.” Abby raised an eyebrow.
“That’s a bit extreme you know, even if you do like to exaggerate a bit.”
“A bit?” Lucy started laughing.
“Ok, whatever then. Maybe I won’t jump off a bridge. But for now lets get back to the subject, shall we?” Nikki looked at Lucy and Abby. They nodded so she continued on. “Well first, George says that there’s a crazy psycho trying to take over the world and getting people to work for him.”
“What should we do?” Lucy asked.
“I don’t know,” Abby said. “All he said was that we were the only ones on this mission and the details.”
“So…”
“So I guess we wait until tomorrow and see what happens.”
“Yeah, I guess so.” They all lay back for a moment to gather their thoughts. “Hey, on a totally different subject, what’s with your cat?” Abby asked, breaking the silence.
“A very short story,” Lucy replied. “Me and my mum were arguing because I wanted a dog but my mum got me too choose a different pet. That’s when I saw Kyrah.”
“Who’s Kyrah?” Nikki asked.
“The cat! Obviously!” Abby said, rolling her eyes. “Geez, you can be so clueless sometimes. I swear, if I cracked your head open there would be nothing but air inside.”
“Not true! If I didn’t have a brain, I’d be dead.”
“Fine, you would have a brain, but it would be the size of a pea.”
“Umm, guys,” Lucy cut in. “I was saying something, remember?”
“Yeah, sorry. I do but I don’t think Nikki does with that brain of hers.”
Nikki grinned. “At least I’m no so stupid that when I got asked who was the current president of Australia I said ostrich.”
“I thought he said Austria.”
“What’s that got to do w-“
“WELL ANYWAY,” Lucy said over them loudly, which got their attention. “I saw Kyrah in a cage with 2 other cats and I fell in love with her. So we bought her. And then when I went to find Kyrah to feed her, she wasn’t there.”
“Lucy!” Abby’s mum called. “Your mum rang and told me to tell you to come home now.”
“Why?” Lucy asked.
“It’s a surprise.”
“Oh, well I guess I’ll see you guys later,” she told her two best friends and left.
When Lucy came home she found her mum in the kitchen. “Mum! Why’d you tell me to come home? Did something happen?”
“Yes, while you were looking for Kyrah at Nikki’s house, which you weren’t even there, Kyrah came wandering back. She’s such a smart cat isn’t she?”
“Really?”
“No, I’m joking.”
“Oh,” Lucy looked all sad again.
“Of course really! Why do you think I’d lie about something like that?”
Apparently this was a cue for Kyrah to walk out from behind the bench, which she did. “Kyrah! I missed you so much!” Lucy cried as she ran over to hug her. Lucy’s mum shook her head and went back to cleaning up the kitchen.
For the rest of the day, Lucy concentrated on doing her homework and spoiling Kyrah. It’s not fair, she thought. Here it is, the summer holidays and she was cooped up inside doing homework, instead of hanging out with her friends. Holiday homework should be so illegal.
When Lucy was searching up information for her history project, she thought: this is so unfair! We have to work as secret spies which take up a lot of time but George doesn’t even give us the priority of less homework. And we don’t even get paid! No wonder she was practically failing school. She could quit but Lucy loved being a secret spy too much. Usually she, Nikki and Abby and Rachel and Brittany worked on missions together although they were enemies but this time it was different.
Talking about secret missions and George, she just got an email from him:
To secret spies,
We have George. This is not a joke. Be there at Ragged Cliff at 4pm today sharp. If not, then George will be saying hi to the fish in the ocean.
Oh no! Lucy thought. The evil guy had kidnapped George and was now using his email to blackmail them. This was serious! Lucy panicked. Ragged Cliff was the most dangerous place she could think of and 5000 metres below it was the ocean. It took about an hour and a half to get there by bus but she had to walk for another ten minutes before she got there. It was 12.30 at the moment which meant she should leave in about an hour and a half.
First, Lucy called Abby who had already read the email that was sent to all three of them. Nikki was still there which was good. They planned what they were going to tell their parents so if they got suspicious and called one another, they would all have the same stories. Then they would meet at the bus stop outside the shopping centre and catch the 2:10 bus.
They all waited anxiously and finally at ten to two, Lucy asked her mum for a lift to the shopping centre. “Sure,” her mum said. “You sure are busy today.”
“Mum! I’m a teenager, it’s my job to hang out with my friends. And anyway this is important.”
“Important how? Like saving the world from evil geniuses?” Lucy knew her mum was being sarcastic but she still couldn’t help thinking: what do you know? “Going to the beach,” was what she said though. “What’s so important at the beach?”
“Oh. Umm…. getting a tan?”
“Ok, whatever then. I’ll let you go this time but you are going to finish your assignment or else.”
When Lucy got to the bus stop at the shopping centre, Abby and Nikki still weren’t there. Five minutes later she realised why. She was at the wrong place! They were meeting at the other bus stop! A couple of minutes later, Lucy found Nikki and Abby around the corner. “There you are!” Nikki cried. “The bus is just coming, we thought we were going to miss it.”
When they got on the bus, they started talking about George. “I wonder if George is going to be ok,” Nikki said.
“Well, I guess it’s all up to us,” Abby replied.
“This bus better hurry up or they’ll kill him for sure!” Lucy said. “And if…” Suddenly everyone on the bus went silent. She looked around and realised everyone was staring at them. Nikki saved them all by saying “Umm, as I was saying, you should really go to that website. It’s got some really cool games.” All the other passengers nodded and murmured and resumed their chatting. Lucy hear someone saying “Oh, a computer game.” As the bus pulled up at its first stop, a bunch of people piled out as even more people piled in.
An hour and a half later, they finally arrived at their destination. By then it was 3:45. After a long journey up to the cliff they finally arrived at the peak of it.
There was a large stone castle like structure that was in ruins and an opening which was probably the entrance.
“Oh great,” Abby said impatiently. “After the walk up here, we find out that it’s deserted and it was a whole big joke!”
“Whoa!” Lucy cried as she slipped on a patch of wet grass. Quickly, Abby and Nikki both reached out to help her up when she slipped again on the same patch of grass. Nikki laughed. “You’re getting clumsy! You should really watch where you’re going.”
They all turned around to look at the castle gain when something big landed in front of them. They all screamed and stood back from whatever it was. “State your name,” said the big thing which after a better look, tuned out to be a big emerald dragon. “You’re a dragon!” Lucy said excitedly.
“And you can talk!” Nikki added. The dragon, impatient that it was being ignored said again, “State your name!”
“Um,” Abby said. “It’s more polite if you offer your name first and then ask, you know?”
“Aaarrgghhh!” The dragon screamed in frustration. “I’m not playing a game here!”
“You started it,” Nikki argued.
“Fine, my name is Drackooth. Now what are your names?” In turn, Lucy, Abby and Nikki told him their names. “Now tell me what you’re doing here or leave,” Drackooth commanded.
“No way, we’re not leaving!” Abby cried,. “We were sent here by someone who told us if we didn’t come then George would die!”
“Leave!” Drackooth thundered. “Or I will roast you and eat you for dinner!”
“ENOUGH!” commanded a female voice. Drackooth, didn’t I just tell you not to do things unless you were told to?” Lucy looked to where the voice had come from and gasped. “Kyrah?” she asked in disbelief. For Kyrah had just walked out of the entrance. “Yes, it is I.” Kyrah paused. “Wait a minute, Lucy?” she asked in disbelief. “Well I guess if you’re in my way then I will still dispose of you even if you are my master. Some sacrifices in life has to be made to be able to reach the top.”
“How did you get here? And what ARE you doing anyway?” Lucy asked, still in shock.
“What else?” Do you think I would just come here to relax?”
“Wait a minute,” Abby said suspiciously. “It was you who sent us the emails, wasn’t it? And you’re the crazy psycho trying to take over the world aren’t you?” Kyrah looked offended.
“Crazy psycho? What kind of crazy psycho would be smart enough to plan all this? And as for your other question, no, I did not send you the emails.”
“We did,” two people from behind her said.
“Brittany! Rachel!” Nikki said not quiet believing what she was seeing. They were their enemies but who knew that they would turn against them. And George too! Brittany smirked.
“Surprised? Thought so. We heard your cat’s sad story about how she was separated from her family and decided to help her get her revenge.”
“Ahem!” Drackooth was bored from being ignored. “Mistress, shall I finish them off now?”
Kyrah glared at him.
‘No. I have something better planned for them.” And to Brittany and Rachel she said, “You girls can go now. You’ve done enough.,”
“Wait a minute,” demanded Rachel. “You promised us we would get a reward.”
“What reward?” Kyrah asked innocently. Rachel was furious.
“Fine, have it your way” and walked over to Nikki, Lucy and Abby. “What are you doing?” Brittany asked curiously.
“If Kyrah is their enemy as well as ours, I guess we work together to defeat her,” Rachel said furiously.
“Fine, suit yourself,” Kyrah said.
“Come on Kyrah, tell me what you’re up to,” Lucy insisted. Kyrah sighed and began to speak. “I’ve created a plan to avenge my sisters’ death. That’s why I ran away. With me in control, I will rule this worthless planet. All human beings shall suffer and I will make cats live the life of royalty!” Kyrah was getting excited. Nikki started laughing her head off. “How on EARTH are you planning to do THAT?” she asked. “You poor sad little human. I plan to do that with one object and one object only,” Kyrah replied.
“And what would that object be?” Abby asked
“My Super-ultra-mega-hyper thing that goes BOOM that will make every human do as I say! And it’s only a matter of time before it’s automatically triggered. Everyone gaped at her. “So, what do you think?” They still didn’t answer. “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” and she laughed at her own joke. They still didn’t answer her so she started to get annoyed. “HEY! I’ve spent an awfully long time mastering this plan, and all I get is expressions of goldfish?” Finally a part of their brain clicked and they realised what was going on. “Does that include me?” Brittany asked. “After all, I DID help with your plan.”
“And me?” Rachel asked hopefully, slowly making her way over to Kyrah. “Helping me with what? Pressing a few buttons on the computer to inform our guests of the kidnapping of their principal?” Kyrah laughed.
“What about me?” Drackooth asked.
“Are you human?
“Uh, no,” Drackooth said slowly.
“Good! The overgrown lizard is finally learning something useful!”
“Hey!” Drackooth said defensively. “Dragon, not lizard!” “Hey! Enough talking! “Kyrah snapped. “Let’s get to the good part already!”
Suddenly there was a high pitch beeping that made everyone jump. “Oh,” Kyrah said excitedly. “It seems like the super-ultra-mega-hyper thing that goes BOOM that will made every human do as I say is ready!”
Lucy, Nikki, Abby, Brittany and Rachel looked around nervously. “I guess this means goodbye,” Nikki said tearfully.
“Oh, come on, there’s always hope!” Lucy said encouragingly. There was a big BOOM. “Ok scratch the hope,” she said.
“Hang on, wait a minute,” Abby said. “Nothing’s happening.”
“Yeah, something’s happening alright, look at Kyrah and Drackooth,” Nikki said.
Both Kyrah and Drackooth were staring into space, not blinking and barely breathing. They all walked over to the edge of the cliff and looked down. Animals were gathering down there and some were even trying to climb up the cliff without succeeding.
“I think I know what’s going on,” Abby said.
“Well, what is it?” Brittany demanded.
“I’m not sure, but instead of us being affected, it’s the animals. Look, they’re trying to get up to us!”
“We’d better find it soon or there’s going to be big trouble!” Lucy said. They all ran into the castle and began searching the rooms. Finally after a couple of minutes, they found it in the centre of the castle. The super-ultra-mega-hyper thing was standing in the middle of the room. Abby went over to examine it. “I knew it!” she cried out triumphantly, “Kyrah’s set it to animals instead of humans. Look!” They all looked. There were two buttons which had labels on it just as Abby had said. “Well, are you guys going to help me fix it or are you going to stand there?” Abby demanded.
So they set to work and after what seemed like years, it was set to normal. They pressed the button and again there was the high pitched noise and then a big BOOM! Lucy ran out of the castle and over to where Kyrah was standing just in time to see her rubbing her head looking dazed. “Kyrah! You’re alright again!” Lucy shouted with joy as she hugged her. “Huh? What’s happening? What am I doing here?” Kyrah asked, at first dazed then starting to panic.
After a few minutes of calming her down, they finally realised that Kyrah had forgotten all about wanting to take over the world so they decided to go home.
“Hey, you three?” Brittany said.
“What about me?!” Kyrah asked.
Brittany ignored her. “This never happened and if you tell anyone about it, the rest of your high school years are not going to be pleasant!”
“Yeah, like I’d tell everyone you’re a secret spy and blow our cover,” Lucy said. After Brittany and Rachel left, she grinned and said to Nikki and Abby, “She just doesn’t want to be known as the loser who got bribed by a cat. Not that anyone would believe her anyway. I mean, a talking cat!”
They all laughed.
“Talking about high school, we should get George,” Nikki said. “No need, they heard a voice say. “They turned around and saw George walking out of the castle.
After a quick explanation, they went home.
When they got back home, Lucy found her mum in the garden. “Oh Lucy you’re back, and with Kyrah! While you were gone, some visitors for Kyrah arrived. And from behind her walked two cats. Kyrah jumped out of her hands and ran over to the cats. Lucy didn’t know why but Kyrah was happy and that’s all that mattered.
