“Uncle Daniel!” I cried out, all traces of sleep vanishing. I wrapped my arms around my favorite uncle, feeling like something in the world was going right. “How are ya, Lexi?” Uncle Daniel asked me playfully, his gentle face widening into a broad grin. “Hospital food doing you good?” “Oh come on, its not bad,” I said laughingly. “You’d be surprised how great it can taste after you’ve slept an entire day.” I sat up a little straighter, propping up some pillows behind my back.

My uncle sat down in a chair beside the bed and moved some brown hair out of his eyes. “Well Lexi, the rest of the family is gonna come and visit you. Hope you can stand Great Aunt Irma!” he teased me, his hazel eyes bright. “Hey, any company would be good after all this isolation,” I whined. “I really want some actual people around.” “Oh, so I’m not a normal person?” my uncle said skeptically, his eyebrows raised. “No you’re not,” I laughed. “Okay then,” Uncle Daniel grinned, “if it’s company you want, then that’s what you’ll get!”

Suddenly, almost as if they had been signaled, a large group of chattering people burst through the door and squeezed into my tiny hospital room. Most all of my family, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, were there. They all began crowding my bed, hugging me, kissing me, asking how I felt, placing some flowers on my bedside table. Wow, talk about claustrophobic. But it all felt so comforting and so normal, just having people I knew around me, even my Great Aunt Irma, now complaining grumpily about the size of the hospital room and shooting dirty glares at Grandpa Dexter, who was indeed squashing several of my smaller cousins against the wall.

I smiled and laughed with each of them, accepting their cards, thanking them all. But out of nowhere, the door burst open again, and the doctor who had been here the first time came rushing in, looking harried. “No!” he cried, looking around at everyone. “I didn’t mean all of you at the same time!” He paused, glancing at the people cramped around my small bed. “She needs rest, not stress!” This guy looked like he was about to pop a vein or something, so my family trooped out with good grace, murmuring good-byes to me.

Finally, the door shut, and only the doctor was left. He heaved a great sigh and moved toward my bed. I caught the words “Dr. Michael Baldwin” glinting off his shiny name badge. He sat down on the recently vacated chair beside my bed. All my light-hearted happiness now vanished as I stared at him apprehensively, wondering what was coming next. “I’m sorry about that," he said quietly. “Your entire family wasn’t supposed to come in at once.” He peered at me worriedly, as though 5 minutes with people who I knew and loved had hurt me in some way. “You’re okay, right?”

“Of course.” I answered, a little irritably. I sighed and crossed my arms. He had to come in just when I was having fun. “Now aren’t you going to tell me what’s wrong with me and when I’m gonna get out of here?” My voice became a tad anxious. “I’m perfectly fine now, you know.”

“Not as good as you think,” Dr. Baldwin said, now looking a bit nervous himself. I was sensing a major declaration of truth coming. “I can’t answer your second question yet, but I can answer the first.” He took a deep breath and looked me right in the eyes. “The truth is…You’ve got cancer. More specifically, you have leukemia.”
