My eyelids were heavy as I struggled to open them. I blinked woozily, looking around. How long had I slept? There were no windows in my drab and gloomy hospital room, except for a rectangle one in the door. Suddenly my mother’s face appeared in that small window, checking to see if I was awake. A second later, the handle turned and she walked in, smiling at me even though I could see she was concerned.

“How are you?” she asked me kindly, stroking some hair behind my ear. “I’m tired….” I said wearily. “And kinda hungry. Do you have anything?” “No, but the nurse will bring something in soon.” Right on cue, a young lady walked in with a tray, her white nurse’s uniform matching perfectly with the walls. Giving me a cheerful smile, she said, “Here’s your breakfast, dear.” She raised my bed up a bit so I could sit up. Setting a tray on my lap, she took out some cutlery form her pocket and handed it to me, then exited through the door.

I looked at my food, some scrambled eggs and a waffle, and began to eat with the ferocity of a wolf. “Wow, I guess you’re really hungry,” my mom chuckled, pulling a chair over beside my bed and sitting. “You were asleep for a very long time.” I paused, my mouth full of waffle. “How long?” “Well, almost the entire day.” she replied. “I feel much better now,” I said eagerly, stuffing some more scrambled eggs into my mouth. “The rest and food did me good. When can I go home?”

Very quickly, my mom’s expression turned anxious again. “Honey, I don’t really know. I guess the doctor will have to tell you that.” She glanced down at the tiled floor, biting her lip. Yeah, there was definitely something she wasn’t telling me.

“So, how did everyone from the picnic react?” I said, not wanting to upset my mom more. “Well, our big family reunion sort of broke up after that.” My mom told me, sighing. “Most everyone drove to the hospital following the ambulance after you collapsed.”

Then her face broke into a grin. “Actually, it looked very funny. There was a huge line of cars driving along with the ambulance. People must have thought we were crazy.” she said with a laugh. “Yeah, well we are!” I said, smiling. “And you wouldn’t believe how crowded the waiting room was! There wasn’t enough room for Great Aunt Irma to sit! And you know how cranky she gets when she can’t rest her legs.” My mom said with a smirk. I grinned too at the thought of my great aunt complaining about substandard service, her frizzy gray hair shaking, her lips set into a tiny pout.

“They all wanted to come in and see you, but the doctor decided that it would be too stressful for you.” my mother said. “And too crowded.” I added. “Grandpa Dexter would take up the space of three people!” All of a sudden, I felt a wave of homesickness come over me. I had only been here a day, but it felt like a year to me. I wanted some company. “When can they come and see me?” I asked dolefully. “I’m getting kinda lonely…”

“Soon, honey, very soon.” My mother assured me. I yawned and closed my eyes. “Mom,” I asked unfocusedly, “can you lower the bed now? I wanna rest now.” “Of course sweetie.” My mom said, turning the crank. And then I drifted into sleep, my mother’s words echoing in my ears.
