Walking away from my best friend, knowing I had hurt her was hard, but going back would be harder. I wiped my hair from my face, as I watched dark gray storm clouds beginning to cover the bright blue sky. I sighed, remembering that Leam would be at work until 7, and was going to go to Mark's to pick me up when he got off.
I shuddered from the light breeze, and it felt like deja vu as I walked down the street, my heart slowly filling with hurt. I wasn't one to cry much, but I sure felt like it as I spotted the gas station down the street, and decided to call Leam from a pay phone.
Just as I was about 30 feet from the small glass booth, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was following me, but I wasn't about to stop and turn around. I quickened my face, as I became more and more paranoid with every step I took. I was almost running by the time I reached the phone, and my hand shook uncontrollably as I pulled out 50 cents and dialed Leam's work number.
"Leam?" I asked when he answered.
"Is something wrong Randy?" he asked.
"No," I replied as he sighed with relief. "Me and Amanda got into a fight, so I guess I'll just wait at Barnham's Gas Station until you get off work. OK?"
"Alright," he said hesitantly. "I'll try hard to get off early. Love you."
"Love you too," I said, as I hung up the grimy black phone. I sighed as I looked around. What was I supposed to do until then? I looked around me, and decided it was the perfect time to look for a job, since all of these places were within walking distance at the moment.
By the time I put in my last application it was already around 5 o'clock. I waved goodbye as I  ran from the small fast food place, into the pouring rain. I looked behind me nervously, the familiar feeling of being followed creeping up on me once again. The area around me seemed deserted, making me more nervous, knowing I was out here alone. Just me and whoever was following me.
I could feel myself begin to panic, as footsteps got louder, and I kept my eyes fixed on the gas station door. I crossed the street, not bothering to look since nobody was around, when I was sent flying off my feet, hitting the ground a few feet away. I stared up into the rain, my eyes wide with shock, as I lifted a bloody hand to my pounding head.
"Oh my God! Are you alright?" I heard a man cry, then a car door shut. Suddenly the street was swarming with people.
                "What happened?" I choked out.
"I didn't see you. I swear, you just came  out of nowhere, I mean with this weather how could I have seen you," the man tried to reason. I concluded this man had hit me with his car, and I guess that's what I got for not looking before I crossed the street.
I began to sit up, and pain ripped through my side, so I just let myself fall back onto the hard ground. My clothes were soaked, whether with blood or rain, I couldn't tell as I stared around at all the faces, who were now watching me, more for their own amusement then concern for my well being.
The man continued to rant about how sorry he was, that it was a terrible accident, but I wasn't really paying attention, as I looked around, searching for whoever was following me. I held my breath as I stared into narrow hazel eyes, a shadow cast over them from the umbrella of the couple standing beside him. I closed my eyes tightly, thinking this can't happen right now. I opened them back up and watched as Mike disappeared from the now shrinking crowd.
"I'm fine," I told the nearly hysterical man, as I stood up. "Can you lend me 50 cents for the pay phone please?"
He searched his pockets wildly, handing me at least 3 dollars in change, filled with relief that I was not going to press charges. I held my side where the car had hit me, as I limped to the pay phone to call Leam. I hadn't even began dialing when I saw his car pull up beside me.
