When we got to Luke’s place, I was not the least bit tired, although my head was killing me. He unlocked his door and let me inside.

            The apartment was smaller than Matt’s, but definitely nicer. He had a huge flat screen t.v. mounted on the living room wall, across from his black leather couch. There were no stains on the tan carpet, just a few imprints from where he had recently moved the glass coffee table. There were a few pictures hanging on the wall, of when Luke had visited his family in California.

            He smiled as I looked around. “You were expecting a dump huh?” he asked, reading my mind. I smiled and sat on the big dark couch, running my fingers through my long hair.  “So,” Luke said, lighting a cigarette. “Are you going to tell me why you’re leaving Matt?” I looked up at him. Where should I begin? I thought miserably.

            “So many reasons,” I said, not really wanting to get into it, but feeling like I owed Luke an explanation since I would be staying on his couch. He stared at me, waiting patiently for me to continue. “He was very… abusive.” I chose my words carefully, knowing it might sting to hear things like what I was about to say about your best friend. “It started months ago. One night he came home in the middle of the night and woke me up, and started wailing on me. He beat me until I passed out, and when I woke up he said he was sorry and it would never happen again,” I said slowly.

            “And was that the only time? Besides tonight I mean?” Luke asked. I shook my head. “No it became a normal thing to me. Some nights were worse than other. His favorite thing was to choke me and hold me down, which are the two things I hate the most,” I said pulling my shirt down a little to better expose the bruises on my neck. Luke’s face was going pale, as I continued to show more and more bruises and cuts I had gotten over the months.

            “Did you do anything to piss him off?” Luke asked. “Not that anything you did would make you deserve that,” he said quickly.

            “When things first started going down hill, I would rack my brain every night trying to figure that out. But I haven’t done anything to him,” I said. “It killed me every time he beat me, because I was just so in love with him. We used to be perfect together,” I said, my voice trailing off as I remembered how we were when we met. “And now I’m too afraid to even go back for my things, because if he doesn’t kill me, he’ll trick me into staying with him.”

            Luke walked over and sat next to me on the couch. “I’ll go get your stuff for you Myra,” he said, wrapping his arms around me. “He’s not going to hurt you anymore. You deserve better.”

            I flinched as he pulled me closer to him, and ran his fingers through my hair, and for a second I couldn’t decide if he was hitting on me or just being sincere. I decided both. But I didn’t care as I let myself relax in his arms because for the first time in months, I felt safe.
