we didn't used to be like this 10
I touched the cut on my head, and winced, closing my eyes tightly. My head pounded as I covered my face with my hands, waiting for him to speak again. “Did you sleep well?” he asked, leaning forward in his chair. I glared at him from my spot on the couch, wishing I had it in me to get up and kill him right there.
I looked into the kitchen at the clock on the microwave that read 4:30 a.m. It was still dark outside.
I had finally built up the courage to leave, but had not had the strength to get out, I thought miserably. I turned my head to look at Matt. I couldn’t let him win this time. I sat up, despite the pain ripping through my head, and walked past him, into the bedroom. I pulled a suitcase out of the closet and began throwing clothes into it.
“What are you doing Myra?” Matt asked as he walked into the room. “I’m leaving you Matt. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t live like this,” I said, getting frustrated as I tried to shut the piles of clothes into the small case I had. Matt’s face was pale as he watched me, and I saw tears in his eyes as I threw the suit case down. “Fuck it,” I muttered, as I grabbed my purse and jacket, and walked to the living room.
“I’ll send someone for all my things,” I said opening the heavy wooden door. I fled into the hallway, and into the newly fixed elevator. I leaned against the wall, tears in my eyes. My head pounded at each ding it made, and I wondered for a second where I was going to go. I waited for the elevator to make it’s way down, thinking vaguely that the stairs would have been quicker. When the doors finally opened, I didn’t move. I froze, terrified of leaving, but even more terrified of going back. My head throbbed, reminding me of what would await me if I didn’t go now, and I rushed out of the elevator. The wall paper was peeling off the wall in the deserted lobby, and as I pushed open the doors leading outside, I was thankful I wouldn’t be coming back.
The street was dark and empty, as most streets were at 4:30 in the morning, and I shuddered as the wind blew in my hair. I decided to go to a motel for the night, since I really had no where else.
I was walking down the side of the street, when I heard Matt behind me. “Myra,” he said, as he staggered a little. “I won’t let you leave me.” He grabbed my arm and slammed me into the side of the brick building. I punched him in the face with my free hand, and he grabbed my neck, his favorite thing to do, and squeezed tightly. I could feel the blood drain from my face, as I struggled to stay conscious.
“Matt?” I heard someone say. I heard a car door open and shut. Matt released me, taken a little off guard, and I fell to the ground, gasping for air. I looked up into Luke’s confused face. “What are you doing?” he asked. Matt turned his attention to Luke. “She’s leaving me Luke. I panicked. I can’t let her leave me,” he said. Luke looked back down at me, and I could feel him staring at all the cuts and bruises that covered my face and neck. “Look Matt, why don’t I take her home with me, so she’s safe, and I’ll bring her back tomorrow. This way you can cool down ok?” Luke said. I could tell Matt was not at all thrilled at me going home with his best friend, but he was slightly drunk, and in no condition to fight someone his own size.
Matt nodded and kissed me on the forehead, then went back inside. I stared at Luke, thankful that at least someone had come. “So, are you, uh, ready to go?” he said, feeling a little awkward. I shook my head and stood up, following him to his car. I climbed in and leaned my head back, exhausted. “What were you doing out here so late?” I asked as he got in. “I just got off work, and I wasn’t tired at all, so I figured I’d stop by and see you two,” he said, staring at my neck. I nodded and stared out the window, smiling a little, happy to be out of there.
