Thunder roared loudly outside, as I applied lip gloss in the full size mirror sitting up against the wall on my floor. I looked over at my best friend, who was pacing the floor anxiously. She took a hit off her cigarette, before turning her gaze out the window. “There’s a storm on the way,” she said, stating the obvious.

I smiled and said, “Just a second I’m almost ready.” I stroked my straight brown hair and pulled a white tank top over my head. I brushed mascara onto my already thick eyelashes, and Amanda continued to pace behind me. I winked at myself in the mirror, and headed over to my tall white dresser. I fumbled through my underwear drawer, searching frantically, as I didn’t want to waist time. Amanda smiled as I pulled out the tiny baggie filled with white powder.

She sank onto the dark blue carpet by my side, as I got out an empty shoe box and spread the powder carefully on the top of it. My hand twitched and I felt my body getting tense as she aligned it carefully, with a sharp silver razor, into long lines. She then snorted up her line, shook her head at the feeling, and looked over at me. I copied her, action for action, before tying the small baggie back up, and returning it safely to its spot in my drawer. I pushed the drawer shut, and looked over into Amanda’s pale green eyes.

“Ok,” I said, as I looked at myself one more time in the mirror, “Let’s go.”

I opened my window as quietly as I could, and let Amanda jump out before me. I threw her purse to her, and then slid off the edge myself. I landed on the grass with a soft thud, looking around to make sure none of my nosy neighbors happened to be watching.

We started down the dark street, and I looked back at the little gray house, making sure no lights came on. I smiled as it remained in complete darkness, and linked onto Amanda’s arm as we walked swiftly down the street, heading for her boyfriend’s house. It was a warm August night, yet I shivered a little as I heard the thunder rumbling in the distance.

Amanda sang loudly as we walked, disregarding all the people who were in their homes asleep. I stared up at the sky. It was covered in a blanket of dark rain clouds, with a star occasionally peeking through. “How much longer?” I asked her.

“It’s right up here,” she said motioning to a large white house up the street. I nodded and joined in her song with her.

We walked up the wooden stairs, stepping over the ones that were broken. I put a finger on the dirty door bell and rang it two times. “It don’t work,” Amanda told me, as she opened the door and walked in uninvited. I smiled as she led me through the dark house to a door, which I soon found out led to the basement. She pushed it open, and loud music hit my ears hard. I cringed a little, and Amanda let out a little giggle, before we made the descent down the stairs.
