Adam stared up at the ceiling from his bed, confused by his meeting with Daniel. No one has ever told him that he was in the right. It surprised him. Quite honestly, he didn't know what to think of it. He sighed and sat up, raising his hands to cover his face.
"Adam," a voice rang out as the door to his cell opened up.
He peeked through his fingers, then buried his head in his hands again.
"Leave me be, Victoria," he muttered.
    "What's your problem?" she asked.
"I've been locked in this room for thirteen years. You were one of the people who put me here," he snapped, laying his hands in his lap, "Forgive me if I'm not exactly friendly."
Victoria mumbled something under her breath that he couldn't make out and sat down next to him. He put distance between them, making it a point to avoid eye contact. She stared at the side of his face, her eyes longing to lock with his.
"What is it you came for?" he demanded, turning to her.
Their eyes met, but it wasn't what she was hoping for. It wasn't how it used to be, when his eyes were gentle in calming. Now his sharp blue eyes seemed to pierce through her very being, and she looked down at the bed.
"Answer me or leave," he told her.
"...It's time for testing," she nearly whispered.
She got to her feet and waited for him to do the same. She wondered how she could be so wishful, so hopeful, in the presence of someone like Adam Monroe. Time had changed him and it was painfully evident it hadn't made him a better man.
She cuffed him and led him out of his cell. He let countless people gape at him, as if he was some sort of horrifying ghost, used to it, as he walked with her. He had become a legend of sorts throughout the Hartsdale facility and the various other Company locations. He thought nothing of it.
The pair eventually came to a stop outside a wide metal door. Victoria fumbled with her keys. Adam chewed at his bottom lip, bored by the routine. A scream sounded off from behind the door and he perked up.
"Who's in there?" he asked her.
"New girl, Noah, and Bob," she replied, unlocking the door, "Don't worry. They'll be leaving in a minute."
She removed the handcuffs and let him walk into the room on his own. His jaw lowered at the sight before him. Elle was strapped to a chair, begging, pleading, crying, for whatever it was that was going on to come to an end. Bob stood with his back to her, reading some gauges.
"One more time, Elle, like you mean it," he said.
"Daddy...Please. I'm so tired. I hurt all over," she whimpered.
He turned around and glared at her, replying, "You're stronger than you think you are. Fight through the pain. You'll only have to do it one more time today, if you do it right."
Noah glanced from the daughter to the father.
"Bob...Go easy on her. She's seven," he sighed.
"Noah, when I want your advice, I'll ask for it," he snipped, "Elle, do it again."
Adam looked at Victoria, as if to say, Can you believe this? She merely shrugged and stepped off to the side, waiting for her turn to use the room. He returned his attention to the scene at hand.
Elle closed her eyes, a single tear rolling down her cheek. She took a deep breath and the room was blinded by a blue light that left as quickly as it had come. He could feel a slight shock of electricity flow throughout the course of his body and he looked around, wondering if anyone else had felt it. The officials all seemed unfazed. Elle, on the other hand, was keeled over in her chair, sobbing.
Adam winced and took a step forward, but quickly retracted the move. Bob wrote something down on a clipboard and shook his head, disappointed. Noah tore the clipboard from his hands and hurled it to the ground.
"We're done here," he said, "Victoria needs the room to test on Adam."
Bob replied, "We aren't done until I say so."
Victoria scuffed and Adam grit his teeth. He was sick of seeing such cruelty. After four centuries, he had seen more than enough of it. Bob looked at Elle.
    "Again," he told her.
"Hey!" Adam shouted, "She's just a kid!"
Suddenly, all eyes were on him.
"She's got scortch marks all over her. Leave her alone already," he added.
"Excuse me, Mr. Monroe, but I don't believe this concerns you," Bob remarked.
"Really? How funny. I don't give a damn what you believe," he spat.
The room fell quiet. Elle managed a weak smile in Adam's direction, and he smiled back. She was unstrapped and led out the door with her father and Noah. Victoria smiled slightly and took Adam by the hand to the medical station, where she began strapping him up to various devices.
"Glad to have you back, Adam," she said quietly but smugly.
He moved his arm so she could put in an I.V. in and stared straight ahead of him, responding, "Don't get your hopes up, love. I'm still the same man these years have turned me into."
"Sticking up for an innocent girl certainly isn't something I'd expect from you," she told him.
"What can I say? I'm not easy to predict."
"Yeah, yeah...Give me your other arm."
He smirked and laid his other arm out for her, permitting her to prick a vein with another needle. He sat with her, staring off into space as she repeatedly broke his kneecap and studied how it regenerated. He looked at the chair Elle had been sitting in, and his mind wandered.

Elle walked with her dad and his friend, who she now knew as Noah. She didn't understand what had happened, what was currently going on, or what events would soon unfold. It was as if her brain had been fried.
She felt numb. Alone. Abandoned. Betrayed. All feelings a seven year old shouldn't even know the meaning of. She stumbled along with the two men, eventually winding up in her cell. She stared blankly into her father's eyes.
"Rest up, sweetheart," Bob told her, kissing her forehead, "We'll start testing again tomorrow."
He smiled and gave a wave, then left, as if nothing happened. Noah shook his head slowly and walked out after him. Elle sat on her bed. She wondered about the daring man who had, in a sense, saved her. Her dad had called him 'Mr. Monroe'. Was this the same man he once told her he didn't want her to end up like? It couldn't be. That just wouldn't make sense.
A sigh escaped her lips as she laid back and closed her eyes. If she kept them closed, she could pretend like she was at home, in her pretty pink room with all her stuffed animals. She hugged her pillow, imaging it as her favorite stuffed animal; a unicorn she had named Sally. She smiled ever so slightly, remembering a simpler time.

Over the years, Elle's daydreams helped her survive in the Company hospital. They got her through long days of testing and confusion, but also unfortunately disconnected her from reality. As a result of that, her morality became rather questionable. No one could tell what was going on inside her pretty little head. She liked it that way.
By the time she was sixteen years old, she was promoted from patient to agent, trading in her dingy cell for a big, bright office and some freedom. Her crystal blue eyes shimmered. A smile was always on her lips. Nine years of torture and betrayal had seemingly just been forgotten.
"Oh Adam," she practically sang, making her way into his cell.
Adam propped himself up on his elbows in his bed and smiled at her. He had watched her grow up and was happy to be her first assignment. She plopped down on his bed, extending a small cup with a few pills in it to him.
"Drugging me up again, are you?" he asked, taking the pills and swallowing them all at the same time.
She ruffled his hair and told him, "I like it when you act surprised."
He smiled faintly. She took his hand in hers and raised them both in the air. He rolled his eyes and she bit her bottom lip, entranced by the small space between their hands, tempted to make it shine with a deep blue light. Her eyes met his.
"Just a little one...Please?" she asked.
He squeezed her hand, a smirk lighting his face.
"You don't have to ask me, Elle," he replied, "You know that."
She grinned and sent a high voltage shock from her hand to his. He drew in a sharp breath, closing his eyes and shaking his hand to get rid of the tingling sensation as Elle giggled loudly.
"Why does that always make you giggle?" he questioned, opening his eyes and letting his hand be still again.
"I don't know," she said with a shrug, "I just love it when you gasp like that."
She rose, and Adam's heart sank. He looked up at her like a puppy dog that just wasn't satisfied with the amount attention that had been given. He took her hand and laced his fingers with hers as she turned to walk away.
"...One more, for me," he whispered, "And don't hold back."
Elle smiled. Her shocks were the only things he had to look forward to, the only things remotely interesting and out of the ordinary in his life, and she knew that. She brushed her bright blond hair out of her face and looked down at their hands. Adam could feel the tingling sensation start up again. The heat between their hands hightened.
She laughed and pulled her hand back without delivering the shock. He shook his head and wiggled his fingers, still craving for the bolt of electricity. He stared at her as she made her way to the cell door.
"You evil, evil woman," he joked.
"'Til next time, Adam," she replied, walking out.
"You're such a tease!" he called after her.
He smiled, laid back on his bed, and brought his hands to his face. He couldn't get enough of her. Next time wouldn't be soon enough...
