Chapter 4
The whole journey on the way to picking up Tanner was silent. I figured it would be though. Jesse pulls up to the front space in the parking lot in front of the hotel. Tanner wasn’t out yet. He always takes forever to get ready.
“So where is he at then?” Travis asked.
“Oh you know how long he takes.” Jesse replied. “We probably won’t get on the road for another hour.”
“Guys he’s coming. I saw him in the lobby. Please, just act like you are happy to see him, ok?” I tell them.
“Yeah sure I will. Oh Tanner! So nice to see you; here let me squeeze those chubby cheeks of yours.” Jesse said sarcastically, acting like he was some Grandma. Tanner wasn’t there yet to here what he was saying.
I get put the window down in the car and look up at Tanner, smiling at me handsomely. Even though Tanner can be immature, he always finds a way to brighten up my day.
Travis was leaning up against the car Tanner sat his to duffel bags on the ground, hinting that Travis should put his bags in the trunk. Travis rolls his eyes and uncrosses his arms, then picking up the bags and throwing them in the trunk. I could hear Jesse let out a small chuckle in the driver’s seat.
“Hey,” Tanner said, softly.
“Hey,” I answered back with a smile.
Tanner lightly gave me a peck on the lips that made me flutter. This defiantly wasn’t the Tanner I was talking to only twenty minutes before.
“We better get going if we want to get on the road by nine.” Jesse retorted.
“Yeah we probably should.” I responded.
Tanner opens the car door the same time as Travis. He sat in the seat behind me as Travis sat behind Jesse. Jesse began backing out of the parking lot and headed for the exit and turns left away from the hotel.
For about five miles up the road it was silent and if you know me, I hate silence.
“Hey Tanner I have a dumb question to ask you,” Jesse said.
“Ok,” Tanner reacted.
Oh great. I thought. What’s smart ass Jesse going to come up with now?
“How come you were here in this hotel anyway? Don’t you live a few minutes away?” he asked.
You know, that was one question that I never would have thought of. The question kept rolling threw my mind until he replied with, “My parents kicked me out and I didn’t have anywhere else to go, so I was staying here a couple of days.”
“Oh,” Jesse replied, with his left hand on the wheel and the other resting on the armrest.
I could just tell by the look on Jesse’s face that he thought he was lying. And the thing is why Tanner wouldn’t have told me this before is beyond me. I haven’t seen him in over a week til now. Is that why he never called to tell me anything?
Unexpectedly, I hear my phone beeping as if I had got a text message from someone and the only people that text me is Jesse and Travis. It’s seldom that Tanner might, but usually we like talking back and fourth to each other.
I take my phone out of my right back pocket and look at it. Travis? Why would he send me a text if we are in the car at the same time? I looked back at Travis who winked at me. I take it as he had something rude to say about Tanner that he didn’t want to say to me with him being there.
Travis: He’s annoying.
I laugh a little and Jesse looked over at me, wondering why I just laughed. I showed him my message on the phone from Travis.
“Me?” Jesse questioned.
“No not you,” I tell him.
A brief pause swept by. “Oh you mean,” I nodded, he was referring to Tanner. “Ok I know what you mean now.” We both chuckled, so did Travis, but he didn’t want to show it too much sitting next to Tanner.
“What’s so funny?” Tanner wondered.
“Oh I just got a text from one of the big shots for our bad. He’s just getting us pumped up for the concert in Vegas.” I explained.
Yeah, but he didn’t know it was my band mates. Oh Tanner, why do you have to be such a blonde? I mean he had to have seen Travis texting on his phone if he was right beside him, right? We kept laughing for who knows how long, except for Tanner.
