Chapter 24

As we are running, I feel like I’m going to just keel over. Pain shot in my side. We were running for almost three minutes now and who ever this person was had suddenly disappeared. I slowed down.

“Caleb wait!” I shout to him.

“What are you doing?” he replies.

“They stopped.” I told him.

He walks back over to me.

“Why don’t we start heading back, alright?” he suggested.

“Fine by me,” I said, as we came to a road.

We look both directions to make sure no one was coming. I went across first and I saw headlights to a car, but I figure it was farther away, but it wasn’t. The car was speeding like a bullet on the highway. I wanted to go across but something just made me stand there. The headlights were just mesmerizing.

“Karrie look out!” Caleb shouts at me.

I didn’t move but he pushes me out of the road, but I realized after the fact that he didn’t follow. I turn back, calling out his name, but it was too late. A loud thud was made where Caleb’s body met the car. He rolls over top of the car and his body lands on the road, as he lies on his stomach.

“NO!” I cry.

I get up off the ground and rush to his side. I drag his body away from the road, as he turns over to his back. I saw blood ooze from his forehead. Caleb was half unconscious, but he was starting to come back.

“Caleb, I can’t lose you. Can you hear me?” I asked.

His eyes open slowly, as he put his had on mine. He smiled, which made me smile back, as tears flowed out from my eyes.

“I couldn’t have let you get hurt. That car wasn’t going to slow down. It was so close to getting you,” he said, as his voice was very groggy and weak.

“I wouldn’t have cared, as long as you were fine.” I told him.

“But you’re having a baby on the way. I couldn’t stand watching you slowly drift away, with a baby to come. Karrie, I love you so much, I just want you to know that.” He said, as if it was the end.

“Caleb don’t you dare say that! This isn’t good-bye. I’m going to call 911-” he cut me off.

“No you aren’t, because by the time they get here, I’ll be gone.”

“Don’t say that! Caleb I need you. I can’t lose you. You’ll be the father of this baby and I don’t want her/him to grow up without a dad.”

As silence approaches, I call 911 and tell them to bring help right away. As I hung up though, I feel more tears stream down the side on my face.

“Don’t cry Karrie. Just think of all the good times we’ve had together. I had my first kiss with you. You were the first girl I made love to, plus you’re having a baby. I couldn’t be more happier, but I think my times come.” He whispers, as he strokes his hand on my cheek.

“Caleb you can’t do this. You just can’t!” I demand.

“I love you,” he stated. “And you are the only one I loved. No one has ever been so loving and caring to me then you.”

I wiped a few tears away from my eyes. “Stop that!” I grin. “Can I have at least one last kiss before go?” I cry, not wanting to say those words.

And like that, out lips meet slowly, letting a spark like feeling go through me. It was one of the most romantic ones I’ve had from him yet. As more tear came from each of our eyes, I watch as Caleb pulled away slowly. I look deeply in his eyes.

“I love you,” I reply.

“I love you too baby. Don’t forget it! I love our unborn baby too,” he cried.

This was probably one of the first times I’ve seen him cry. I watch slowly, as he drifts away in the wind. This isn’t what I had expected so sudden. How am I going to live without him?

“Goodbye… my love,” I whisper, as I cry more and more. I lay my head on his cold chest. In the distance, I heard sirens coming near and I just lied there, next to Caleb, wishing I would die with him.
