Chapter 6

Dylan drops Melody and Brittany off at each others houses, along with Melody’s car. Dylan wanted to walk me back to my house, even though it was pretty far away. Once we left Melody’s house we turned on Hemlock Street, which is where I live.

“So what did you say to Caleb?” Dylan asked.

“Do you have to be so nosey?” I replied, as he knew I was just kidding around.

“Well, sorry. I was just wondering.” He smiled.

I don’t want to lie right in his face, but I didn’t want to come right out and tell him that I had kissed Caleb.

He didn’t reply back. So, I start thinking about Caleb again. At this rate, I won’t be able to sleep without him on my mind, but he’s changed a bit. He doesn’t seem as emotional as I had remembered. He seems to stand up in what he believes in, which I guess is a good thing.

I started reminiscing about my past with him. We had ours good times, laughing at each others stupid jokes, but even as friends, we had our hardships. Just thinking back at what Cindy had said to him made me clinch my fist and I was full of rage.

“Karrie, are you ok?” Dylan asks, looking over at me. I looked up at him. I felt my face getting red.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I replied.

“Don’t lie to me. I know something’s wrong.” He said.

Darn, he knows me good, which isn’t a good thing.

“I was just thinking back at when I was still in public school. I’m just mad that I didn’t stay longer.” I replied, which was true, but wasn’t the entire truth.

“Yeah, I know a lot of people miss you,” he said.

“Like who?” I insisted for an answer.

“Well, I don’t know all of them, but I know Cindy Brown does.” He responded to me. I nodded.

We both reach the front porch step of my house and I turned around to face Dylan.

“Thanks for walking me home, but how are you going to get home? You live like three miles away.” I said.

“No problem; I can just walk home. No big deal.” He replies.

“Oh ok, well I’ll hope to see you soon. Call me when you get a chance, alright?”

He laughed. “I will,” he agreed. I gave him a peck on the lips and said good-bye. I watched him walk down the street, as I tried to get the momentum to get inside the house. I opened the door, as it creaked a little bit. I paced over to my room slowly. I share my bedroom with my twin brother, Ryan. (Personally, I don’t think we look anything alike.) I didn’t want to wake him, but he was awake anyway.

“So how was the party?” he asks.

“Great, but weren’t you invited?” I reply.

“Yeah, but I had to help mom around the house.

She didn’t want you to stay, because she wanted you to go out in have fun.” He said.

“What about you?” I respond, confused.

“I’m grounded, remember?” he smirked.

“Oh, yeah I forgot.” I said, grabbing my folded clothes off my bed and put the in my dresser drawers. I went in to the bathroom and changed into my pajamas. I brushed my teeth, then shut the lights off, plopping down on my bed.

“I heard it was at Caleb’s place,” Ryan said out of no where, as I get under my covers.

“Yeah so, and your point,” I replied.

“Well, y’all were like in love with each other. I saw it in your face every time you’d see him or someone would say his name.” he explained.

I looked over at him, even though the room was dark, but the moon shined through my window and lit up the room a bit.

“Yeah, but somewhere deep down, you love Caleb too.” He said, looking back at me from his bed.

I didn’t respond. Ryan was right. I do love them both, but I love Dylan more. My feelings from the past can’t affect mine now, can they?

“See I knew I was right,” he chuckled.

“Ryan, it’s not funny. I don’t know what to do. It’s like my past is coming to haunt me or something.” I reply.

“Well, I’ve never been in this kind of situation, but all I can say is follow your heart.” He said.

“That doesn’t help me Ryan. They’re both in my heart!” I shouted, but trying to keep my voice down a little.

“I don’t know what to tell you then,” he replies, turning around so that his back was facing me. “We’ll talk it over in the mornin’.”

I rolled my eyes and sighed. Of course I had to have a brother that just blows everything off. I stare up at the ceiling and try and drift away in deep sleep.
