Chapter 1

It was late. About 8:30 at night. I was sitting on my front porch swing, chugging down a can of Coke Cola. There were millions of stars overhead. It was a beautiful night. Down here in Alabama, I see it a lot. Basically, we’re in the middle of nowhere. There’s like three or four houses down the road a little less than a mile, but that’s it until you get up into town. As I already told you, I live in the country; rough dirt roads, no one around, everyone mainly drives trucks.

“Karrie, you best get in here or mama’s gonna be wonderin’ you got to,” said my twin brother, Ryan, who happens to be four minutes older than me.

“Alright, I’ll be in soon. Just tell her I’m out here, ok?” I replied, grinning and wished he wouldn’t have came out here.

My life has been flipped all around since I was in Jr. High and I can tell you why.

**Flashback

Back in 6^th grade, I had one of the strictest teachers in all of Dothan. It’s the truth too. When I walked through the classroom door, he introduced himself.

“Hello, my name’s Mr. Lentz,” he announced, with a big grin across his face.

I smiled. “I’m Karrie, Karrie Evans.”

“Oh, you’re our new student, follow me.” He said, guiding me to his desk, which had a bulletin board behind it with a ton of pictures of him and his family. All the students in the classroom were really noisy. Occasionally, some of them were glancing over at me, because no one saw me before. I wasn’t really the new kid, but I wasn’t in school for the first week of school because my family and I were on vacation down in California.

“Ok, Evans, Evans, Evans,” he repeated, looking at a piece of paper, that I assumed was the seating chart. “Alright Karrie you sit next to Caleb Hershey, the end seat in the last row. Caleb,” he shouted over at him.

A boy with piercing blue eyes and dark brown hair, which almost looked black, was looking up at Mr. Lentz and me. From where I was standing, he was decent looking.

“Thank you Mr. Lentz,” I replied.

I walk over to my seat and sit next to Caleb. Once in a while he’d look over at me, but he didn’t say a word to me, which I thought was pretty rude. We had only two or three classes together, but I can’t really remember.

A few weeks later are when I was really starting to make new friends, even with Caleb. He’s actually a pretty nice guy. We grew closer as friends, but we were nothing more until a foggy February morning in homeroom.

That day, I walked into the room and find a note on my desk. I sat down looking around at who might have placed it here. It had a heart with my name on the front. I decided to just open the note, so it read:

Dear Karrie,

I look over at him, sitting to the right of me. He was talking to his one friend, Anthony I think it is. I look at the note again and I didn’t realize it till now, but there was a picture of him inside it. I suppose he was giving it to me. I felt like I was about to break down in tears; happy tears though. I’ve never been ask to be any guys girlfriend.

“Guys you won’t believe what just happened,” I announced to the both of them.

They both look at me.

“Girl, what are you gonna tell him?” Nancy questioned, wanting to know every detail.

“I don’t know, I mean I sort of like him, but_” I was cut off by Cindy, my other friend.

“What are you three chatting about? You know if you don’t get to your seat, Mr. Lentz is gonna yell at you,” she smiles.

“We’ll talk later ok.”

Rachel handed me the note and Cindy and I walk back to our seats. Cody looked over at me. He knew I had already read the note.

“So what do you think?” he says.

“About what,” I asked, like I didn’t know what he meant.

“Don’t play stupid! You know what I mean,” he laughs.

“Well, I’ll have to think it over first, as long as it’s ok with you?” I reply.

“No, no that’s fine. Take all the time you need.” He smiles. I might sound crazy, but that’s when I thought that I was really starting to like him, but how could I tell him, without showing my feelings all at once?
