Sequerrian Pt. 9

“I do believe it is a good time for us to depart, Fresia,” Valeria walked up behind me and touched my shoulder in a grandmotherly way.

“May I do just one more thing before we leave, dragon?” I snapped at her, but I immediately felt bad about it, “I am so sorry, I just want to bring this food to my brother and sister, and Vincent was annoying me again, and –“

“There is nothing wrong, you did not harm my feelings in the least,” She turned me around to look at her gentle smiling face, “Now, what do you wish to bring to your sick siblings?”

“How did you know they were sick?” I was getting confused by her again, and it was bound to trigger another breakdown on my behalf, “I never told you they were sick…”

“Darling girl, the more accustomed I am to a human, the easier it is for me to read their emotions. It is obvious they are sick for you are bringing them foods with nutrients good for fighting sicknesses, not meats and other items that could make them worse. If you would let me, I can get the fruit to them for you, and leave a note with it for when they awaken,” I nodded and handed the fruit to her tentatively.

She set it on the table in a pile and stared at it for a fraction of a second; it started to disappear quickly, but not poof disappearance: disintegration. After it was gone, a loud pop echoed through the room, causing Vincent and Henry to jump like a couple of scared little girls. I stared in awe at the sparkling spot on the table where she had put the fruit to send it to my siblings; the sparkles faded and I smiled up at Valeria, “That was amazing.”

“Dragons have a few unneeded powers, like that one, and I enjoy seeing the happy look on other creature’s faces when they see such a wonderful power at work,” She smiled back at me and we turned to see the men staring at us.

“Did you boys enjoy that?” I winked at them and giggled at their confused look, “Vincent, I am surprised at you; you did not know that your dragon had such powers?” He shook his head slowly and looked at Valeria confusedly.

“He never did bother to ask me,” She leaned toward me and whispered it loud enough for him to hear her, “He is just so… vain.

Vincent glared at us, and I saw Henry stifle a small laugh, pulling Vincent’s angry stare toward him, “What are you looking at? I did nothing,” Henry spread his hands in front of him and shrugged comically, still trying not to laugh.

“Let us just go…” Vincent walked away toward the door and stormed out in a rage.

“Now who needs to laugh at himself?” Henry looked toward us and motioned us to follow him out the door. Once outside, we saw Vincent leaning against the wall waiting for us.

He pushed himself off the stone wall with one shoulder and watched us file out, “Are you all ready to leave already, now that you are done laughing at me?” I nodded and we proceeded behind Vincent back to the tapestry, well, the window thing.

“Um,” I touched Vincent’s shoulder lightly, causing him to turn and look at me for once in our long walk back to the tapestry, “How is it possible to go into the fabric?” I touched it lightly to prove my point; it felt like normal fabric.

Vincent rolled his eyes and pulled some black dust from a pouch that hung to the left of his sword sheath. It seems to radiate darkness and I noticed that it sucked the flames of the torches on the walls nearest to us toward itself.  He mumbled something incoherent and threw the powder onto the tapestry. It glowed momentarily, the same aura the dust had when in his hand, and the picture was gone, leaving an ominous black hole in its place.

“Are we actually going to walk into that thing? It does not look very trustworthy,” Henry said as I watched it expand and contract as if it was a living breathing creature.

“Of course we will, male savior,” replied Vincent with a snort and a sarcastic laugh, “Is our little savior afraid? Aw, poor baby is afraid of a hole in the wall.”

Valeria shoved Vincent through the hole, glaring at him all the while, and started to step through herself, “It is okay, Henry, just trust us, we know what we are doing here,” She stepped through and was gone.

Henry and I looked at each other in fear and looked back at the doorway, “Who is going to go first?” Henry asked in a timid voice. I shrugged and started to back away slightly. He gripped my hand, sending chills through my body, and dragged me bravely through the portal with him.

There was a momentary lapse of pure darkness but a speck of light showed before us. I felt my shoes hit a stable surface to walk upon, and I looked back in the direction we came from. Only shadows remained, and they writhed and slithered about, and I turn my head back toward the promising light. Henry, still holding my hand, but now more like a vice grip rather than lightly, pulled me along with him toward the light.

“Come along now,” His voice echoed loudly through the darkness, and I heard indignant hisses all around us at the noise, so I shrank closer to him, grabbing his arm with my free hand, “I want to get out of here.”

Within seconds we were at what had previously been a speck of light; it was now big enough for us to walk into, but we could not see any details to show us what Fairqwerest would be like. Henry stepped into it first, and like before, dragged me unwillingly into the portal behind him, “This is amazing,” I whispered as we stepped out into the beautifully clear light of Fairqwerest. The only bad thing was that Valeria and Vincent were nowhere to be seen.

“Are you humans? I have never seen a human in the flesh before,” A squat little creature stepped before us, startling me. It was so unlike anything I had ever seen before, but it was cute.
