Mary Ann was never a shy child, quite the opposite is true in fact. She was always running off somewhere, and she never met a stranger. Well at least not until that one day, but that's for another time. Mary Ann was also extremely smart, not a genius by any means just very determined. She was reading by her forth birthday and could count up to 12 the age of her brother. She loved school and while the other kids in class cried for their parents Mary Ann just picked up a book. Mary Ann's family didn't have a lot of money. All of her clothes were from the Salvation Army and more often than not there wasn't enough food if there was any. But that didn't stop her from dreaming. Mary Ann was all the teachers favorite, but not in the teachers pet sense. Although she wasn't shy she preferred to keep to herself at school to better learn new things. The reason why the teachers loved her is because she never got in trouble. She never picked a fight, always returned her homework, and taught the other students things they had not yet learned when she wasn't reading or making up little rhymes.
Up until she was 7 she believed the world could do no wrong...She didn't realize that she was poor, she was just happy. She saw nothing wrong with the fact she had no dad, she thought everyone was like that. She never witnessed anything die or heard about death, that was just something out of books she believed. Unfortunately when she was 7 her Light started to dim.Her Great-Grandmother died. She didn't understand at the time why she couldn't go to Grandma's that day after school, because she always went to Grandma's. Grandma would always be ready with a hug and an I Love You and make her a snack. She would always tell Mary Ann stories and let her play outside or help her cook. But that day Mary Ann went to the neighbors. She played games with her brother and sister and helped Mrs. Grady make dinner. She was having a great time until she got home that night and found out her Great Grandmother was dead. That was Mary Ann's first clue that happy ever afters only happen in fairy tales....................

this is my first effort to write something other than poems and songs. I have made up stories for the kids before but never wrote them down. Please tell me what you think. |
