Heartache

Romance Created on 3-6-08 Views(41) Story Rating G

The lunchroom filled fast as I took my seat at the far end of the cafeteria. The paint cracked from the disgusting colored green benches and the bright orange tables clashed with the nasty seats. Talk about being cheap, the school can’t even repaint the benches or fix the damn sinks from spraying water all over freshman. I pick at the lack of vegetables and their so-called, “Meat.” If that’s meat then I’m Mary Queen of Scots.

Jeremy catches my attention as he starts walking toward my table. He’s wearing a red polo shirt, cameo pants, and dock Johnson sneakers… figures. Crap! I can’t deal with this today; for the love of Pete if he starts talking about, “Us” again I swear I’ll implode. He sits regardless of my silent pleas for his immediate departure.

“Hey Lizzy! What‘s up?” He smiles and takes a seat right next to mine, even though the table is still half empty.

“Hi Jeremy. Not too much just getting from day to day.” I sigh, “The usual.”

“Ah…I see.” He nods and glances at me.

“You see what?” My eyes flicker with anger and my face turns red, what the hell does he see?

“Still hung up about our break-up?”

“Hardly, I‘m the one who dumped your butt, remember?”

“How could I forget,” he grunted, “I know, but it‘s still kind of fresh in my mind ok.” Clearly, I must’ve struck a cord.

“Whatever.” I picked up my fork and stabbed the meat sitting on my plastic tray, “It was your fault anyway.” He moved uncomfortably in his seat and started eating his salad. How could he possibly try passing the blame on me? What a jerk!

“I know that but can‘t you give me another chance? It was a HUGE mistake that I promise I‘ll never make again. Please Lizzy? We broke up like two weeks ago, isn’t that enough time to think things through?” Jeremy hung his head over his tray and pulled at his jeans; he was just waiting for my most recent rejection.

I sighed, “Why Jeremy? Why the hell should I give your cheatin‘ass another chance? That was my best friend!” He ran his fingers nervously through his blond mop and rubbed the signs of fatigue from his eyes.

I need to get out of here. Ah whatever, I’ll just leave. I emptied my tray and stood near the door, waiting for the relief the bell brought. Jeremy emptied his tray and stood a good foot from me.

“I‘m sorry, Lizzy. I guess I just… I… never mind. I‘ll leave you alone.” Jeremy’s head drooped and he pushed up the slung bag on his shoulder. It just about broke my heart to see him miserable, but there was no damn way I was taking him back.

“Jeremy.” The look of hope in his eyes made me want to slap myself, “I can‘t understand why you would ever…” I took a deep breath and pinched my brow, “This is hard for me to say aloud. Jeremy, I forgive you but that doesn‘t mean anything, I still don’t want…”

“I know. I‘ll stop hassling you Lizzy. I‘m so sorry for hurting you and I promise that I‘ll never hurt you again.” Kids started gathering around the doors, boxing us in near the cracking paint on the walls and the stench from the trash cans. “I‘m sorry.” Aggravated, I pushed open the doors for some air and accidentally tripped into Jeremy. He caught me in his arms and whispered, “Careful Lizzy. Don‘t hurt yourself.”

My eyes instantly locked with his and memories of love returned at an alarming rate. It was as if I was seeing him for the first time in a new light. As cheesy as the sight was he helped me stand and opened the door for me. “Uh, thanks Jeremy.”

He simply nodded once and let me go. “I‘m sorry it had to end this way but yeah…” I walked away and trudged down the halls I’d be stuck in for another two years. Jeremy didn’t let it bother him much longer; he got another girlfriend and I just dropped off his radar. Enough said, right. I’m just tired of jerks and Jeremy realized that I didn’t have to put up with it. Thanks Jeremy!

Jerk!
