Damien fell to the floor and panted for air, his lungs were on fire and he gasped for life. He clutched his side in extreme pain; his hand came back up covered in a dark red liquid. He ran it through his fingers and pleaded with his inhuman eyes at Steve.

Damien pulled the knife from his side with a sigh of pain. He could feel the silver working its way through his veins in that deadly attempt to stop his life.

Claire took the moment of surprise and threw Steve over her. He landed on the floor and immediately fought back, his nails just missing Claire’s eyes. She got a good hold on his neck and snapped it to one side.

Steve dropped to the floor, his eyes wide with that last deathly stare. His hand fell from his chest and a ball of crumbled paper fell from his hand. Claire unfolded it and read, "Together forever." A picture of Kat and Steve lay behind the simple phrased line.

Claire tucked the picture into her pocket and crawled to Damien’s side. He lay in pain, his face outlined in deep black veins from the poison. Damien hyperventilated, his glazed eyes roaming the bedroom rapidly. She held his hand; there was nothing that anyone could do.

Jasper and Nikolas crawled over next to Claire. Each placed an arm around her shoulder and watched the poor boy before them slip slowly away. He gave one final breath and exhaled, his head drooping to one side, eyes still wide with fear.

Claire closed his eyes and tears streamed down her cheeks. She shook off their embrace and crawled away. Her body heaved and threw up all the tension and fear she’d let build up and build.

Jasper closed Damien’s eyes and he felt a tremor streak through Damien’s body. Damien changed into a creature of night – a stealer of daylight. Nikolas in a fight of rage turned on Steve’s dead body, he ripped open his stomach, bloody mesh spilling everywhere. He ripped and tore apart the body; with a final tear Nikolas fell next to Damien and buried his head on Jasper shoulder. Jasper patted Nikolas as he cried and screamed obscenities. Claire looked up and caught Jasper’s eye for a mere second; a loud noise outside caused Claire to flinch.

Sirens blared their terrible noise waking half the neighborhood. Jasper tugged Nikolas up and called, "We’ve got to move…now!" Claire reluctantly stood and escaped with Nikolas and Jasper.
