Chapter 15
Claire sat still and listened intently for another howl but it never came. She had to get rid of Damien; she needed to find Jasper! She could feel the anger blowing in through the kitchen window and covering her entire frame. Damien sat quietly and waited for her to listen to him. “Do you love me? It’s a simple question with a simple answer.” He shook his head, anger soaking into his pores. “Whoa…that was weird.” He thought. “Claire?” She held her hand to quiet him; he noticed a star shining back at him through the bright lights. A caked layer of blood coated her hands. He touched it with the tip of his finger and Claire glared at him. She turned away to listen again and he licked his finger. The taste was unbearably delightful, like warm honey and tea. He quietly thought of telling her his secret but didn’t want to risk anything. Claire finally turned and slouched in her chair. “No, Damien.” She placed her head down on the table, eyes starring widely at the refrigerator. There was a shiny gleam to her naturally green eyes. “I can’t love you.” “Why the fuck not!” “I love Jasper, Damien.” He thought her reply was almost perfect except for one name. “Damn it, Claire!” He jumped up from the table and walked out the door. Claire cried and kept her head still. The slightest movement would cause her head to explode with extreme pain. She’d succeed in getting rid of Damien, though it held no value at all; she felt horrible for doing it. She stood against her better judgment and went to search for Jasper. *** Damien walked down the dimly lit street, his hands tucked safely away from prying eyes. He could feel his claws poke out his jacket and rip the side. He walked for about half an hour and hopped the steps to Steve’s house. He knocked on the door and walked in. “Steve! Steve, hey man, I need to talk to you!” He jumped up the stairs in one hop and landed at the foot of Steve’s door. Damien looked back down the stairs at the dark house and whispered, “Steve?” A shape shifted past Steve’s door and knelt at the end of the hallway. Damien squinted into the darkness and looked at the strange movements of the boy. He crept forward and a tiny voice pleaded, “Stop…don’t come any closer.” “Steve?” Damien moved forward and a powerful blow knocked him against the wall. A rank smell made him buckle to his knees. The horrible aroma wafted from the small form huddled in the corner. “Man are you alright? You smell like death!” Steve stood and walked gracefully towards Damien and smiled. Dark circles and bags paled his face more than usual. “Little do you know my dear Damien.” “Cut the shit Steve!” He almost gagged from the rancid smell protruding off Steve’s body. It fell in waves and burned his nose. “Man turn a damn light on!” Steve nodded. A light flickered on without him even moving. The cord dangled in the middle of the ceiling without a hand wrapped around it. “Steve, maybe you should sit down. You don’t look alright!” Steve laughed and threw back his head. He smiled and tilted his head. “My dear Damien…it’s so nice of you to join me. I smell a hint of whore on your skin though.” He wrinkled his nose and coughed. “Come with me…I want to tell you something special.”***Nikolas glared at Claire as she snuck past him into the woods. “She intentionally hurt him and walks out into the night to do it again! Not this time…she won’t.” Nikolas smiled and his eyes gleamed with the moon looming overhead. He had always been there for Jasper, not her! He jogged after her and soon caught up. “Claire, thank god! There you are, I’ve been looking for you.”“Where’s Jasper?” “It’s terrible…truly horrible.” “What? What’s horrible?” Nikolas smiled with his eyes and added, “Damien…found Jasper and…their fighting barbarically in the woods…Jasper told me to find you and keep you safe.” Claire shook her head, tears falling everywhere. “No…I just want…why can’t I have both!” Nikolas smiled, “Claire, listen, there are no easy choices.” He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, “Jasper will win. Don’t worry.” Claire’s eyes molted into a golden yellow so bright and eerie it hurt to look at directly. She growled at Nikolas and snapped her teeth at his hand. He ripped his hand away and growled back. A silent but clear language passed between them in that split second. Claire pounded off into the woods already in her other form, legs pumping and intent etched deeply on her face. Nikolas laughed to himself and chased after her.Comments
