Chapter 10

Claire woke with Jasper’s arms tightly knotted around her; she grunted and moved out of them carefully. The sun was high in the sky; which cast a shining glow on her bed. Claire closed the curtains hoping that Jasper would sleep more. He looked so peaceful sleeping; his arm stretched out over a pillow, his mouth slightly open. He grunted and rolled over murmuring in his sleep. “Mmm…I’ll…Claire…” Her name settled his constant rambling and he fell back asleep with a smile on his face. She headed for the bathroom, Jasper’s snores echoing behind her. She laughed and took a shower. Jaspers startled cries made her halt in the shower. He opened the door and walked carelessly in, not even bothering to shy his eyes away. “Jeez, don’t do that to me!” He pinched the skin between his brows in frustration. Claire shrugged and continued, “I thought you were gone…” he murmured, “like last night.” “Sorry, but I didn’t want to wake you.” Her smile broadened, “It’s cute when you talk about me.” His eyes shifted to the masked parts of her behind the curtain, “Jasper!” He laughed, “Sorry,” he tilted his head; “You should hear yourself at night.” “Anything bad?” Jasper shook his head, “No,” a coy smile spread from ear to ear on his face, “except that part about wanting me so badly.” Claire laughed and threw a scrubby at him. “Leave, Jasper.” He chuckled and closed the door behind him. She stood there for a few minutes thinking aloud, “I hope Damien does not hate me.” The instant she whispered his name her heart ached badly. She double over from the pain of it; lying on the floor of the tub, Claire quietly hummed to herself. Maybe if she forgot him, he would slowly disappear from her mind. Claire snorted at her simple answer, it would harder than that. She had Jasper, which was a good thing. Water sprayed over her small form and trickled down into the tub. Claire cried but it was impossible to tell with the water. She hugged her knees towards her chest and buried her head in them. She wished she had never met Damien; things would be so much easier. Had Claire never met him, would she have fallen for Jasper? “Probably not,” she thought. Claire regained control and stepped out from the shower. She gasped, Jasper sat on the toilet his head folded in his hands. Claire tripped and went tumbling backwards; Jasper quickly caught her. “I heard distress, sorry to intrude.” Claire looked up at his quiet face and almost cried; how much did he hear? She knew better than to mention it so Claire let it drop. She starred at his blazing yellow eyes; a dark creamy yellow had her intrigued. Jasper closed his eyes, “Claire, do you love me?” Jasper’s eyes opened and the bright twinkle disappeared into a humanly rich brown. Claire sighed at the sudden change and wondered if he’d noticed. “Yes but,” Claire turned her head away, “I have to settle my heart first.” Jasper gulped and grabbed her a towel. He expertly wove it around her and pulled her closer. “I’ll wait, forever.” He buried his head in her wet hair and placed his cheek against her head.
