Chapter 9
Flashlights skimmed the area for the deafening scream and came across a clearing of gore. Hands held over their mouths; they immediately called the police.           Hanover and Mason received information of the girl and they tried to hold back Steve. He fought their hold and ran into the clearing, only to drop to his knees and whisper, “Why Claire, why?”           “She was attacked by an animal, Steve. No one is to be blamed, it was a freak accident.” Steve ground his teeth and walked solemnly away, he’d put this to rest. He had to for Kat’s sake. A thought occurred to him, he also had to warn Damien as well. ***          In all the pain, Claire had turned back into her human form; Jasper knelt down beside her and wrapped a large blanket around her. Claire’s eyes opened and she looked directly at Jasper, “Jasper.”           “Yes, Claire?”          “I love you.” She fell back into the dark world of unconsciousness; He scooped her up in his arms and held her tight. Jasper ran back to the house and carefully placed her down.           Jasper waited for her to wake; he’d covered her up and taken care of all her cuts and bruises. She looked in very bad shape, but she’d live. She loved him! Jasper moved to her side and lightly kissed her forehead. Claire’s eyes wrinkled and she woke. She smiled to see Jasper close to her face. “Are you alright, do you need anything?”          “I’m fine.” She choked. Her head was very sore but no permanent damage remained. Claire took a deep breath and held it. Jasper held her against him and sighed softly. He was relieved that she was all right, “Jasper,” He faced her, “I…Something very bad happened.”          “What happened?” his voice was concerned and it sound very confused. What could be worse than coming an inch towards death? He shook his head and listened inventively.           “I got rid of Damien,” she moved uncomfortably, “but someone saw me…get very angry, inhumanly angry.” Jasper nodded, now he understood. “He was a friend of Damien’s.”          “Now that there…is a problem.”           “I’m sorry.”          Jasper looked down at her, “For what?”          “Everything.”          “Don’t be…it’s not your fault.”          Claire thought about who was to be blamed; she was. It was her fault; one way or another it was her fault. She growled at herself. Jasper laughed, “So feisty!” he joked. Jasper picked her up and swung her around the room. Claire laughed and held on for dear life. He finally stopped and stepped closer. “Beautiful and feisty.” His voice lowered, as did his head; he placed it on top of hers. Claire could feel herself blush; she smiled at the ridiculous match they made.  ***          Steve angrily paced his bedroom, glancing at the phone every five minutes. He’d picked it up and replaced it, trying to order the words he’d say to Damien. Every time they formed, it sounded ridiculous, “Hey Damien, your girlfriends a werewolf! I thought you might want to know.” He snickered at the absurdity of it.  Steve punched a picture of him and Kat at the lakeside. He cursed her for dying.           He yelled as he recalled their final words, “You’re fuckin’ cheating on me?” She nodded and he broke up with her. That was that! However, the memories wouldn’t cease; the look of pain on her face, the tears that followed after. She screamed that she was sorry but he wouldn’t listen. Her cracking voice screaming at him to take her back and all he’d done was walk away. He was ashamed of himself; it was Claire’s fault! Yet, he could not blame her for leaving Kat. Just tearing her apart, he could blame her for that!
Claire had been a sweet girl; Steve pitied Damien. Kat had been mercilessly torn apart. Better yet, sweetly torn apart!
***          Jasper whispered in Claire’s ear, “I’m sorry about Damien.” Claire nodded, the mention of his name sent shivers through her. He’d been so mad at her. She felt awfully pathetic. Claire was so tired; she pulled Jasper up with her.           “Come with me, I don’t want to be alone.”          “Are my boyish charms working?”          “Hardly, you rascal!”           He smiled despite her words, and silently followed Claire to her room. Her hand felt cold in his and he squeezed tighter. He laid down her bed and watched her brush her teeth. Wild strawberry hair flowed past her waist, emerald green eyes that could pierce even the coldest of hearts, and curves that deserved touching. Her beauty outmatched any other.           Claire caught him starring and smiled. Toothbrush in one hand, she closed the door with the other. He rolled his eyes and stretched further onto her bed. Eventually she returned and hopped up next to him. Claire reached over him and turned off the lights. Jasper caught her around the waist and Claire squirmed from his grasp.           She covered herself with Jasper’s arm and snuggled against him. Claire felt safe with him wrapped around her; almost like an invisibility belt. She laughed and entwined her fingers through his. Jasper’s hands were larger than her but just the same; five fingers, one palm, and enough just sensation to feel her kiss the back of his hand.           He watched her kiss the tips of his fingers in turn; reveling at her steady heartbeat while his just about jumped from his chest. He closed his eyes and concentrated on keeping Claire warm; he had to, else he was sure he’d pounce on her sincerity. Jasper pulled her against him and buried his face in her wild hair.           He sniffed and shuddered at the delightful smell she protruded. Claire laughed and licked the side of his face, stopping just below his ear. “Stop that!” Jasper commanded; she was pushing him towards the edge.          “Stop what?” Claire asked, “This?” She breathed in his ear and licked the edge of his lobe. He shuddered at the feeling and pulled her closer.           “Yes, that.” He murmured through harsh breathing. Jasper stopped and partially pushed Claire away. “Please Claire.” He flipped Claire and pulled her back against his chest, “Try to rest, misbehaved one.” He quietly chuckled and buried his face in her hair once more. Claire sighed and let him fall asleep, before long Claire was soundly sleeping also. ***          Steve picked up the phone and dialed Damien’s number. It repeatedly rang and no one answered. Steve left a message and hung up. He told Damien to meet him behind his house. There was something he had to urgently tell him. He regretted having to break Damien’s heart but it was for Damien's safety. He felt an aching in his chest that seemed to increase with each minute until dawn; Steve hardly slept that night.           Dreams chased him with horrible images. Kat held him in her arms while she pulled bloody parts from the gash in her stomach. “I love you baby.” She cried, blood slowly running down her chin.

Steve woke three times in a cold sweat, finally landing him in a coma like sleep. He would tell Damien the truth! He had to; Kat deserved that much, less Claire’s death.
