Chapter 8
She hopped downstairs and held the end of the banister. He did not even hear her movements. Claire frowned; she could never love Damien, it irritated her the most. He was like a wonderful treat that she wanted but couldn’t reach; in the least, a relationship between them could never work! Her fear of losing control over herself, bottled with her unknown love for Jasper coiled, and made her feel obsolete. She made her way silently over towards Damien and placed a hand on his shoulder; he jumped and spun on her. Damien stopped when he saw that it was Claire, “Wow, you scared me.” “Less than I’m capable of doing.” “What?” “Never mind, I’m ready.” Claire walked down the four steps to his car and got in. Damien shook his head in confusion and started the engine. It was a short drive, before long he pulled in front of a large blue house. The house stood out from the rest with a white picket fence, wrap-around porch, and rose bushes outlining the fence. Damien got out and called to a couple of people hanging over the porch. She spotted the familiar couple she’d seen last time; even now, they were still at it. Claire wondered if they’d ever even stopped. She smiled and spotted, Steve, the shredder of tears as or so called it, walking towards them. “My delectable Claire it is a pleasure to see you once more…and at my humble abode…I’m honored.” Claire noticed that his eyes were lain with bags and he smelt of cigarettes and sweat. Steve’s attire suggested that he hadn’t slept and his breathe oozed of coffee and hard liquor. Claire shied her face to the side when he kissed her cheek. “Thank you.” She curtly grinned. “Come…lets have some fun!” Steve wavered slightly but took her hand and led Claire past many people who were already drunk. The smell was overwhelming; Claire covered her nose and moved on. Steve stopped and introduced her to people. They barely noticed her while they danced. The music roared out of two, large, bass speakers in the back of the room; as soon as Claire saw them, the crowd swallowed them up. Damien popped up behind her and wrapped his arms carelessly around her waist, “Claire.” He purred right next to her ear, she could feel the dense air whip past her face. His breath was hot and moist on her skin, she closed her eyes and relished in the feeling. Thoughts of Jasper surfaced in her mind and she pulled out of his embrace, feeling guilty. “What’s wrong?”She could barely hear herself think in the loud room. “It’s too loud!” She screamed over the music and held her hands to her ears. The smells instantly returning but more intensified then before.“Come with me, then.” Damien mouthed. He pulled her up a flight of stairs in a corner of the room. Each step putting them further into the bowls of the house. Damien smiled at her and opened the door at the end of a long hallway. It was a large room, furnished with common bedroom necessities. Claire sat down in a computer chair and spun herself around. Damien watched her, his eyes smiling for him. “Whose room is this?” Claire spun once more and stopped, dizziness making it harder to see. She could crisply hear the music vibrating the floorboards beneath them. “Steve’s.” He calmly walked up behind Claire and placed his hands on her shoulders. Damien spun her around to face him; her eyes flickered at the delightful smell he carried. Peppermint and blood filled her nose with a tingling sensation. Claire’s eye color flickered from a rich gold back to her humanly green eyes. She could drink his scent all day, and play with his dark hair forever. He thought he saw her eyes change color but pawned it off; he didn’t care when he had her with him. Claire radiated something he could not explain; it made his blood boil and his breath catch. ***He felt it the first day he had seen her, standing at her locker with books tucked underneath her arm. He had no idea what it was but he wasn’t the only to notice it either, many others held the same look as he, when she entered the room.Maybe it was her long frame leaning over to pick up books or the way her light hair randomly fell in front of her eyes. Damien realized she was different from other girls; just the way she carried herself, so much pride and power but she was also very shy. He remembered watching many try and fail with Claire. Damien had decided to have a different approach and it had worked beautifully.
***“Damien,” dazed, he snapped back into reality, “What do you know about me?” She decided to get right to the point. He thought it was a weird question but answered, “Everything I need to know.” He smiled at her and lightly kissed her forehead. Claire flinched; he didn’t know everything and it was dangerous on her part to be near him. Claire had never had a real boyfriend; Jasper had personally set himself to that task. Nevertheless, it bothered her to keep a secret from him. “Damien,” she gulped, “I need to tell you…” It was the only way to get rid of him, she knew that the truth would scare the hell out of him and yet she didn’t want to tell Damien. Claire wanted to keep him; but she forced herself to repeat her words. He cut her off and pulled her up against him. “I want to show you something!” He smiled and pulled her back downstairs. Steve stopped them, “You’re not leaving yet are you?” “No were just going outside. It’s too loud in here.” Steve nodded and let them proceed. Damien led her past all the blubbering drunks and out back into the nearby wood. He let go of her hand and stopped in a clearing; he walked out into the center of the clearing and extended his hand fro her to join him. The moon was full tonight and it coated the earth in a silvery white glow. Every nook in the clearing was lightly illuminated. Claire silently said a prayer to the goddess of the night for herself and took Damien’s hand. He pulled her over to a nearby bush where flowers sat awaiting their bloom. Damien uncovered a plant above them so the moon shown direction on the buds. Miraculously all the buds opened at once. Bright like fire and still delicate to the touch; they blossomed before her eyes. Claire was amazed that such a scene was conceivable. “It’s so beautiful!” “Yes…but beauty does have a dark side, watch what happens.” Confused, Claire watched the buds open until, she figured, they couldn’t open anymore. Then she gasped in horror as the flowers started to die, their once vibrant colors fading and flaking off. Each and everyone died and fell silently to the ground. “But why?” she cried, “Why does everything wonderful have to die so suddenly?” Claire dropped her head and picked up the fallen remains of the flowers. They crumbled into dust beneath her fingers; hands bound into fists Claire raised her hands to her mouth. She slowly opened it and blew the remains across the earth; tiny dust like particles fluttered to the earth and disappeared. Damien shrugged, “I don’t really know,” he tilted his head, “maybe so other beautiful things may blossom.” Claire heard another meaning in his words but shrugged it off. A couple laughingly passed them and went off further into the surrounding wood. Claire gritted her teeth, safety first apparently. The rustle of wind made her shiver; Damien pulled her closer and embraced her while she thought. Claire couldn’t get rid of him; there was no way to do it without Damien thinking she was a monster. Monster; Claire had been raised to see herself with respect and pride, but now the word cut deeply into her heart. She sighed and wished things were easy. “Claire?” her head snapped up, “You look confused.” It was a true statement but she couldn’t tell him truthfully why, either. She nodded, laughing slightly.“I guess I am but it’s nothing more than a little irritation.”“Tell me about it, tell me why.”“I…I can’t.”He nodded; Damien figured that she’d tell him in time. Claire had many secrets, ones that could destroy the mere boy beside her. She quickly looked around; the air had changed. Heavy breathing grew ragged and then nothing. Claire decided that this was the time; she had to get rid of him. Forever. He would be in danger otherwise. “Damien, I have to tell you something.” She drew in a deep breath and held it, waiting for his response. “Hmm…!”“I can’t see you anymore.”“What! Why not?”“It’s just too complicated to say. Please just listen to me, you wouldn’t want me anyway.”“Of course I want you, I want nothing more!” he held her away from him, “I love you!” He pleaded. The hurt on his face burned Claire skin like silver, she wanted to hold him and tell him everything was ok. She could not.Claire almost broke the silence with tears, this can’t be happening. Why does something so beautiful have to die? “I just can’t see you anymore. Please believe me! I want to, but I can’t for your sake.”“Fuck my sake! I don’t care! I love you and that’s all that matters!”“I love you too,” she choked, “Then what’s the problem, is it Jasper?”“No, but I can’t, I just can’t.” “Fine!” Damien angrily walked into the wood.He left her sitting next to the dead flowers; Claire brought her hands to her face and wept. Her fingers grazed her cheeks, nails biting down the side of her face. Tiny droplets of blood dribbled down her neck; she cursed herself. Claire wound her fists into the ground with a deafening crack. She howled at the full moon until her lungs hurt and cried. Her tears mixed with the already drying blood. She could hear soft footsteps receding from the edge of the clearing. Claire growled; she’d had enough. She silently chased the person throughout the wood. Finally, she drew near enough to see him; Steve wandered aimlessly around searching for the way out. Claire lightly tapped him on the shoulder, “Steve?”He spun around and backed against a tree, “Don’t hurt me! Please, I won’t tell anyone, I swear!” He’d been watching her; Claire felt like a monster. “Are you…” he gulped back his fear, “what I think you are?”“What is that exactly?”“A werewolf!” Claire gravely nodded; he gasped and fell on the ground. She tried to help him up but he shrieked and pushed her away. “Steve I…” “Leave me alone!” He ran back to the house, tripping a couple of times. Claire cried harder then ever; she felt it’d be too soon if she stopped. Claire changed into the proud creature she used to be. She cried throughout the entire transformation, even fighting it a bit. She was disgusted with herself. This time, however, she slinked off into the woods, tail between her legs. Claire wept as she fought her way through the thick under brush. A heart-breaking cry erupted not much further ahead. Claire stopped, one leg perched in mid air. Another earsplitting scream and Claire pounded off towards it. She slowed and cautiously moved forward. The sound of crunching and snapping made her shiver. She moved around a tree, which blocked her sight, and almost threw up. A black shape hung over a lifeless body, ripping and shredding it to pieces. One paw holding the body down, its teeth mashing threw intestinal walls. Wolfish eyes starred back at her, making their point clear. Mine! It was barbaric; the black beast ripped and threw bloody meshes of organs everywhere. The moon illuminated its behavior, and emphasized its body. Claire remembered it from the wood behind her house. Its bright red eyes twinkled in the moonlight. Claire growled and threw herself at the beast. She landed on top of him and tried ripping his throat out. He snarled and threw her away. Claire landed next to the ripped body and yelped; it was Kat! It was Steve and Kat who went further into the wood! Her eyes were a sickening pale color, light blue hair covered most of her face, and torn open was her stomach. Claire snarled and made her way towards him, she bit off a finger on his paw and threw it. He howled in fury. The black beast lunged at Claire knocking her against a tree, she yelped as her head made a grossly snap against the trunk. Claire fell to the ground, barely able to stand. Blood poured out of her mouth and puddled itself on the ground. Every breath hurt and her legs twitched violently. The creature snorted and nudged her body. The sound of approaching footsteps and the glare of flashlights made him run. He pounded off into the forest and left Claire to die alone. She shakily stood and made her way through the woods away from the scene. With her last conscious thought, she hoped Damien was all right. Jasper please help me!Comments
