Chapter 7
She picked up the rest of the glass and cleaned her stinging hand. Claire ran her hand under cool water and watched the blood mix with water, both swirling down the drain. She sighed and wrapped her hand with a bandage. The back door blew open as Jasper struggled to bring Nikolas in. Nikolas struggled against his grip and fought to break free.
“What is going on?” Claire yelled over Nikolas’s struggling cries. She pulled Nikolas off Jasper and threw him. Nikolas skidded across the kitchen floor and hit the refrigerator with a slight thud. He quickly sat up and looked for an escape route.
“Jasper, what the hell is wrong with him?” He shrugged; he was just as confused as Claire was. “Nikolas? What’s wrong?” Nikolas licked his lips and blinked rapidly.
“Audrey. Natalie. My fault.” She tried reasoning with him but it was no use, he just shook his head and cried, “I tried, I really tried, and it’s all my fault.”
Jasper sighed and locked the back door. “We need to keep an eye on him. When I found him he was trying to hang himself on a tree.” Jasper bent and started to cry; Claire had no idea what to do. Torn between comforting Jasper and restraining Nikolas she just stood there and did nothing.
Nikolas sat on the floor and twiddled his thumbs, quietly murmuring to himself. Jasper had composed himself enough to help Claire make Nikolas a cup of tea. He took it and sipped lightly starring from Jasper to Claire. The poor boy was absolutely petrified.
“Nikolas?” He looked up at Claire and tears streamed down his poorly shaven face. She asked Jasper again, “What happened?” Claire did not expect an answer it was merely a gesture of pity. Claire went into the kitchen and made a pot of coffee. Maybe the caffeine might cure her shivers.
Jasper snuck in quietly behind her and placed his hands on her arms. He warmed her arms and felt her shaking subside. Claire sighed and once again, he scooped her up into a ball and sat at the table with her in his arms. She felt safe and warm. He dropped his head lightly on top of hers and sighed, “What about Damien?”
Claire’s thoughts finally kicked back into motion. Damien! She had totally forgotten about the human.
“Umm…I really don’t know.” She shook her head. Jasper sat there holding her; he was in deep thought about the boy.
She liked the human; but in the end, he was still human. Nothing like her at all, nothing at all like the proud beast she transformed into or the howl that escaped her in delight of a kill. He was just a human! He would probably die well before her. It was a sad truth, but it was still the truth.
Claire thought silently about Damien. So immersed in thought; that the crash of a window did not even bother her. She snapped out of her daydream and looked cautiously at Jasper. He put her down and went to find out what had happened. She wasn’t too far behind him. Laying in large shards on the carpet were the remaining pieces of the broken window, claw marks on the sill. Claire strode over and touched the deep gouges marking the wood forever. “He’s gone!” She retracted her hand as if she’d touched something hot. Jasper stood in the middle of the room silently. Poor, Nikolas!
***
Jasper and Claire cleaned the mess and fell, exhaustedly, on the couch. “Claire, I’m going to go out and find him. I’ll be back before sunset.” He stood and wavered near the kitchen walkthrough, “Please don’t leave.” He was tired and sore; Claire could hear every crack in his voice as he struggled to speak. She nodded and dropped her head back to the couch.
Jasper stood there and watched her breathe quietly, her eyes closed tight. Her nose wrinkled and Claire opened her eyes, he still stood there starring at her. She hazily smiled and he smiled back.
He disappeared into the kitchen and she heard the faint sound of the back door closing. Claire sat there and closed her eyes, before long she was asleep. No dreams, just a coma like sleep; she fell to the abyss of darkness.
***
Suddenly Claire woke; she woke to another abyss and reached for the lights. The sun was about to set over the horizon, it’s bloody backdrop made the room seem that much darker. The late afternoon colors hurt her eyes; blurry vision hung at their corners. Her entire body shook and small beads of sweat dewed over her skin. Just as she regained her sight, an annoying sound vibrated her ears. Claire clamped her hands over them and answered the door.
Damien leaned against a pole and moved into the light when she opened the door. “Claire?” Damien looked aghast at the sight of her. “What’s wrong?” She was so pale, and she was drenched in sweat.
Claire wavered on her feet and fell to the porch; Damien quickly caught her in mid air and held her against him. He pulled her into the house and laid her down on the couch. “Claire? CLAIRE? Please, wake up!”
***
Jasper struggled to make it back to Claire’s house with Nikolas tied to his back. He kicked and screamed but Jasper held steady. He stopped in mid step, something in the air changed. Hard as it was to explain, it was if he could smell the rasping of breath and the thud of skin. Jasper hastened his pace towards Claire’s house.
When he arrived, the front door was ajar; his breath caught in a horrible pain-staking gasp. He dropped Nikolas on the porch and ran inside. That insignificant boy! The smell made his skin crawl; he could feel his teeth slowly extend. Jasper fought the urge to kill him and pushed Damien aside.
“What did you do to her?” Jasper demanded. Damien landed on the floor and rolled. He hit the fireplace, with the reminiscence of ashes strewn all over him.
“I didn’t do anything! Who are you?”
“That doesn’t matter, fetch me a wet towel!” Damien ran into the kitchen and returned with a damp towel; he fearfully threw it at Jasper. Damien sluggishly sat down and looked at Claire. She looked so tiny and helpless.
Jasper scoffed at the boy and placed the towel over Claire’s brow.
“Watch her! I’ll be right back.” Damien nodded and kneeled down next to Claire. Jasper stood and walked out onto the porch; Nikolas lay in a heap near the stairs breathing heavily.
“Mind untying me?” He rolled over and faced Jasper. Nikolas threw all his weight into moving across the porch.
“I feel…I was just feeling horrible about not being able to…” Nikolas barely managed to finish a sentence and fell silent. Jasper sighed and with one clawed hand he broke the rope binding Nikolas. He rubbed his wrists and eyes.
Jasper returned with Nikolas following behind him; Damien silently slunk away and sat in a chair. Nikolas eyed Damien, “What the hell is he doing here?” Damien flinched and sunk himself lower into the chair.
“I’ve no idea,” Jasper glared at Damien, “but he’s overstayed his welcome!”
“Stop it Jasper,” Claire croaked, “be nice.” In the absence of their attention Claire had woken; Jasper argued with Nikolas and Damien sat silent. Jasper jumped at the sound of her voice and hastily laughed.
“Claire?” Damien slowly rose, but sank back when Nikolas growled at him. Damien shook his head and thought aloud looking at Claire, “Don’t you have a dog with the same name as Jasper?” He pointed at Jasper. Jasper knelt as if he were going to kill the boy but thought better of it; there had been too many murders.
“Are you alright?” Jasper turned his attention to Claire to halt his anger. He didn’t even bother wait for Claire to answer, “Why are you still here?”
Damien flinched at Jasper’s harsh words. He strode out into the kitchen and disappeared.
A large dog waltzed in and stopped at the sight of Damien, he growled and barked at the boy. Jasper snarled at Damien and threatened to jump; Damien shrieked and stood abruptly. “Claire!” He whispered.
Claire rose and dragged Jasper into the kitchen; Nikolas followed and leaned casually against the sink. Claire held her hand on the side of the refrigerator to steady her. Her body quivered, she felt cold all over. “Jasper please stop it, it won’t do any good.” Jasper huffed at her implication and waltzed to her side. Claire knelt and held his furry head in her hands, “Please…just leave him be.” She pleaded.
Jasper quickly nodded and took back his face. He strolled out into the living room and laid at Damien’s feet. Damien sat very still and didn’t speak.
Claire sat down at the kitchen table and placed her head in her hands. She felt Nikolas sit beside her and lean forward. “Claire, are you ok?”
She laughed and starred at his solemn face, “Are you feeling any better, Nikolas?”
He turned away and thought. “No…but a little more stable.” He placed his head down on the table, “I just feel stupid and scared.” Nikolas blushed; Claire held his hand and jumped. The electric shock she received traveled up her entire arm; she quickly rose and rubbed her hand. “What’s wrong?”
“Ah…nothing, nothing.” Jasper, come here! Jasper came in a little more quickly and looked from Nikolas to Claire. He sniffed the air and felt electricity around Claire; Jasper sniffed in her direction and smelt something rotten. Something that resembled itself in another form; lies.
Jasper’s keen sense of smell aloud him more power than most of his kind. Claire could touch and feel a person’s emotional thoughts. What frightened her the most was that Nikolas was keeping something from her, why would he lie? Moreover, about what? Do you sense anything, Claire? She nodded and gulped. A pile of bullshit, is what I sense!
Claire turned to see Nikolas still with his head on the table. He wasn’t even aware that Jasper had returned. This is just all wrong! We need to talk to Nikolas and you must to get rid of that insistent boy! She nodded and went back into the living room.
Damien smiled when she returned alone, “Are they gone?” Claire slowly sat down and thought of what Jasper said. How could she get rid of him?
“No, but I don’t think we’ll be bothered.”
“I just came over to see if you were available tonight?” he tilted his head, “Claire are you alright?”
Claire snapped out of her thoughts and asked, “I’m sorry what did you say?”
He repeated it and Claire thought of a reply. “I guess I am, let me talk to Jasper first, though.”
“Who is he?”
“Jasper is a friend of mine.” The moment she finished her reply Jasper’s wolf form marched in and laid down on the carpet; his head leaning on Claire’s bare feet. He looked up at her; she could have sworn he smiled.
“How come Jasper and,” Damien pointed at the large dog at her feet, and then nodded at the kitchen, “Jasper have the same name?”
Claire shrugged, she’d made a mistake by saying Jasper’s real name and now Damien was pushing the matter. His suspicion irritated her. She decided to change the subject; Claire felt better and more in control of her body, the shakes and sweat were gone. She ignored his question and asked another, “What did you have in mind?” Damien smiled and pushed himself towards the edge of his chair.
Her mind still hurt from all the shock of today but as a proud being of the night she held back her emotions. Although…sometimes they got the better of her. Claire undoubtedly had the feeling that she’d have to move once more but a more pressing matter kept bubbling at her minds edge. Nikolas.
“I was thinking we’d go to Steve’s party tonight. He’d love it if you and I were there.”
Claire nudged Jasper with her toe, Jasper please don’t follow me.
Claire do you seriously think that I don’t trust you to break it off with lover boy?
Yes, something like that.
Go to your little party, Claire, but remember that he is human. Tonight’s the full moon so be on your guard!
“Sure Damien. Just give me five minutes.” He nodded as Claire pounded up the stairs. Jasper followed her and shut the door with his nose. He transformed back and didn’t bother covering up. Jasper could see the forced content on her face; she tried very hard to mask her feelings.
Claire dug in her draws for anything clean. She threw on dark blue sweater and dark jeans. Claire quickly pulled on flats and stopped a few feet from the door. Jasper closed the distance between them and held her shoulders.
Her breath quickened as he bent and sniffed her neck. She could feel the quiver of delight from him as his breath kissed her neck with hastening gasps. She smiled when he kissed her cheek; Jasper pulled her small form against him and wrapped his arms around her. “I’ve waited so long for you.” He sighed.
Claire frowned, how long had he waited and how long did he intend to wait until she fixed the mess with Damien. She felt butterflies in her stomach and the increasing sense of cruelty on her part. She didn’t mean to make him miserable but she didn’t mean a lot things either.
Jasper rubbed his cheek slowly against hers; their faces instantly warming. Claire ran her lips across his cheek and lingered near his lips. She moved even slower over them, he shuddered and gave in. Jasper pushed his lips hard against hers. She returned the motion and his hands ran up and down her back. Tiny electrical currents made her skins twitch. Claire ran her fingers threw his hair and pushed stray locks from his eyes. He let go of her lips and breathed heavily, “Enjoy your night, Claire.”
Claire frowned at him as he left her alone. Jasper disappeared into the bathroom; she thought of ditching Damien and joining Jasper. She quickly smashed those thoughts; she had to break it off with Damien first; whatever that was between her and Jasper was just a taste of what was to come. Claire licked her lips she wanted more; the feeling was so overwhelming that it hurt her to think of Damien waiting downstairs.Comments
