Chapter 4  Regardless of Jaspers actions, she couldn’t deal with the guilt of standing Damien up. Claire sat at the edge of her bed and pulled on light blue jeans. Her thoughts bounced from Jasper to Damien. What is a rave? She shrugged and figured she’d find out soon enough.  Claire dressed practically for the date, considering she had no idea what a rave might be. Cotton button down shirt, jeans, and black sneakers. She slowly buttoned her shirt and heard the faint sound of her door push open. Claire stood in front of the mirror examining her work. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail.  Jasper appeared behind her and watched her face with a look of discontent. He pulled her ponytail out and braided her hair. “This won’t hit you in the face if there’s a wind.” He finished and tsked at her attire. He disappeared into her room and came back with a tank top and another pair of jeans.  The jeans, he picked, defined her butt more, and the tank brought out her eyes. “Jasper, I don’t ne…” he cut her off before she’d finished and turned into the proud wolf he claimed to be. Claire could tell that she’d hurt his pride and she had no idea how to make up for it. He barked at her and pushed close the bathroom door.  Claire changed and stepped out into her room. He wasn’t anywhere, the window was open and she clearly made out claw marks along the sill. She slowly ran her fingers over the marks. Deep gouges with faint traces of fur.  She sighed and clomped down the stairs in defeat. The doorbell rang and she reluctantly opened it. Would this night ever end? Damien stood taller than she’d ever cared to notice before. He lightly took hold of her hand in his. Damien guided her to his car and helped her in the passengers seat.  “You look beautiful, Claire.” She blushed and hid her face. “Thanks.” She could feel the heat and blood rising, giving her the red-ish look she hated. Her ear twitched at the sound of soft padded feet running along side the car. She rolled down the window and saw Jasper just feet below. Claire heard him growl and the familiar pressure seized her temples.  I told you I’d be watching. I’m not leaving you alone with that human! Fine, Jasper! Just keep your distance and don’t attack him!Jasper agreed with a nod of his mug and fell back. Every time she glanced at the side mirror, she saw him running faster. “Are you excited?” he held her shoulder gently, “Claire?” “Hmm…sorry.” She turned her attention from the mirror, “Yes, I’m excited.” He removed his hand and drove on. Claire tried to concentrate on the road and ignore Jasper. She caught Damien glance at her with an annoyed look, she couldn’t let him see Jasper.  Damien pulled into a cornfield and cut the engine. He sighed and turned to Claire. “You seem distracted, maybe this wasn’t the best time to do this.”“Oh no, I’m fine.” She shrugged, “Really…I’m fine.” He nodded, she could tell that he didn’t believe her. But he didn’t question it further, either. Claire got out of the car and immediately searched for Jasper. Good…he kept his bargain. Claire caught a glimpse of him running past in the field. He’d keep his distance whether he wanted to or not. She’d make sure of it. Damien led her further into the cornfield and the sight before her mortified her. Hundreds of people danced to the hypnotic tune of a popular rock band. Claire just about threw up; she couldn’t dance at all. Damien smiled at her and pulled her down into the bowl of body masses. She could hear the slight chuckle of Jasper, he stood just beyond the reach of human eyes. No longer wolf, she had a sickening feeling that he’d enjoy this.  Jasper pulled a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt from the bag he’d stung around his body. He walked forward into the mass and it swallowed him up. He could see Claire out of the corner of his eye. She struggled against the pull of, the human named, Damien. He chuckled and grabbed a beer. Another human girl pulled him from the stand into the crowd. He wickedly smiled at her and let himself go. She danced against him so strangely that it enticed him. He pictured the girl as Claire and his blood boiled. She danced so close, that for a second, he thought she wanted to merge with him. His eyes silted with a feeling that found its way to his groin. *** Claire yelled out over the crowd at the hand pulling her along. “Damien! Stop, please, stop!” Damien couldn’t hear her and continued to drag her along. Claire’s head spun with the noise. Her powerful ears quaked, threatening to explode. Damien pulled her to an edge of the mass. The noise died down a little and her control came back.  He introduced her to a couple of his friends, whose names she forgot with every shake of her head. A boy not much older than Damien stood and shook her hand, “Hi, I’m the notorious leader of this group, the shredder of tears, the whisker of girls, the heartbreak of men.” He took a small bow and continued, “Nice to meet you, Claire Bonteir.”            “Nice to meet you too, Ahh…?”           “Name’s Steve. It’s a pleasure.”           “Oh Steve, sit your lame ass down!” A girl pulled him down by the loop in his jeans. She didn’t seem mean just controlling with light blue hair and a lip piercing. She stood before Claire and shook her hand too. Claire noticed the rip in her tights and she could smell the metal rings covering parts unbeknownst to the others. “I’m Kat. Nice to meet you.” She slouched back into her original seat and flung her legs up on Steve. He smiled and offered Claire a seat.            She looked at Damien for an answer and he nodded. He whispered, “They won’t bite you Claire. Well Steve may, but I’ll protect you.” She sat and looked directly at Steve. He wickedly smiled and bit at the air. Claire glared at him and smiled. Damien introduced her to a couple making out. She didn’t catch their names but watched them with fascination. Humans were weird creatures to understand. The couple went at it and eventually disappeared to finish.            “So Steve, did we miss anything?”           Steve threw his hands in the air dramatically, “Everything, dude! Huge fight broke out and someone spiked the drinks!” Claire instantly liked him, he just flooded the place with excitement. His hand gestures, body movements, and the way his voice carried on forever. Faint thoughts of Jasper fluttered at her minds edge. She wondered what he was up to. Hopefully he left. She didn’t need a bodyguard.            “Would you like to dance?”           She was enjoying herself here, “I can’t really…I can’t dance.” She sighed. He laughed and pulled her up with him. Damien pulled her through the crowd. She watched, in horror, as the others waved her on. Damien pulled her body against his and moved to the beat. A bouncy song boomed around them as she started to mimic his movements. He laughed as she threw in her own move and picked her up. Damien spun her around in the air and lowered Claire to the ground.            This wasn’t so bad. They danced and she caught glimpses of Steve cheering them on. Damien slowed as the music did and pulled Claire closer. She looked up and saw his glazed over eyes. He sleepily smiled and pulled her into a tight embrace. Claire wrapped her arms around his neck.  ***           Jasper, finally tired, dropped down on the ground next to the girl. “Your cute,” she twisted a strand of his hair around her frail finger, “What’s your name?” He looked at her confused, were humans always this trusting?            “My name is Jay.” He laughed silently at his joke. It wasn’t a lie just merely a coy nickname. He felt that she probably wouldn’t remember his name come morning, so why bother.           She giggled and pulled him closer. He pulled away from the smell of liquor coating her breath. She was really drunk. “My name’s Lilly!” She tried to kiss him, Jasper moved his head away again.           “For your sake, I don’t think you really want to do that.” She giggled again for the hundredth time. He was starting to get quite agitated with her.           “Why not?” she pouted and then hiccupped. Jasper turned his head back towards the crowd and spun on Lilly quickly. He distorted his face into the wolf he became when he willed it. Jasper barked at her and she fell back. Lilly screamed and ran into the crowd. She tripped a couple of times and took off.            Jasper sighed, “That’s why.” He hated humans for their lack of compassion. Jasper stood and went in search of Claire. She had to be here somewhere.  ***           Claire rested her head against Damien’s shoulder and sighed, “Damien?”           “Hmm…?”           “It’s getting late, maybe you should take me ho…” Before she could finish, Damien pressed his mouth against hers. Claire reveled at the kiss, his hands rested on the small of her back. He finally let go of her lips and panted slightly.  ***           Jasper spotted her dancing with the human. He walked up and stopped, she was kissing him. Anger boiled behind calm face. Jasper stalked off and changed into his former self at the fields edge. His clothes laid in ripped shreds, he didn’t care. Jasper ran away for the humans sake. ***           Damien took her hand in his and led her back to his own pack. Steve was playfully feeling up Kat. She swatted his hands away and laughed, “Our newly found friend has returned.” Claire smiled at the two and had a seat.            Damien sat beside her and spoke, “We won’t be staying long, I just thought we’d good night.” Steve argued with him to stay but Damien stood firm.            “Aww…you sly dog.” He nodded at my direction and smiled, “Claire you have a good night and don’t let him whisk you away. I might find you first.” He laughed and Kat said her good byes as well.            “Did you have fun tonight?”           “Yeah I did!” He took hold of her hand and led Claire to the car. Damien drove slower than necessary and eventually pulled in her driveway. He cut the engine and walked Claire to her door.            “I really did have fun tonight.”           “Good, maybe we can do this again sometime?” he implied. Claire nodded and Damien kissed her lightly on the cheek. Claire walked towards the door and closed it behind her.            She sighed once he was out of sight. That was lovely. Claire went up stairs and opened her bedroom door. Jasper lay sprawled out across the comforter with a towel wrapped around his lower half. “Did you have a fun night, Claire?” He grunted through ground teeth.           She sighed eyes closed, “Yeah, yeah I did. How bout you Jasper?”          “Not so great.” He tilted his head and moved towards the edge of her bed. She jumped and landed next to Jasper on the bed. He leaned down on an elbow and watched her close her eyes tightly. Claire sighed again and opened her eyes. Jasper leaned over her and he looked annoyed.            “Jasper are you ok?” He shook his head and leaned closer. “Ah, Jasper. What are you doing?” He sighed, defeated, and pulled his head away. He leaned forward, hands perched on his knees. “Oh…you saw that, didn’t you?” he nodded and put his head in his hands.            “Claire, can I tell you something?”           “Sure Jasper.” She pushed herself next to him and looked up at his hurt face.           “Claire, I’m trying to contain myself…but it’s harder than I thought.” He grabbed her shoulders, “Please tell me that this won’t happen again.”            “Jasper.” She took his face in her hands and pulled him to about an inch of her face, “I can’t promise that.” Claire kissed his forehead and embraced him into a hug. “I like him.”            She felt the soft growl that escaped Jaspers lungs and he stormed out of her room. She hoped that he wouldn’t do anything rash. It was Jasper, rash was his motto. She prayed to the goddess of the night that he’d do nothing. Jasper, she thought, Please be don’t do anything out of anger!
