Chapter 2

He moved aside as Claire flung herself at him. She quickly regained her footing and landed in a crouch. Jasper purred, “Claire and I were having a heart to heart before we were rudely interrupted.” Nikolas nodded his mop of blonde hair in acknowledgment.

Nikolas stood awkwardly; he’d apparently intruded on another attempt of Claire. As pack leader, Jasper, had claim to Claire as his betrothed.

She knew all of this. Jaspers pathetic attempts irritated her. Claire couldn’t stand him; he was the most vile pack leader. Why did he persist? A long game needed end.

She growled at Jasper and lunged again. He cackled with laughter, “Can’t seem to keep your hands off, I see!” Claire barred her large teeth and crouched once more. Jasper tensed for another lunge but it never came.

Nikolas backed away and watched from a far. He could feel something in the air change. Oh Claire, please, don’t rile him up.

She decided to have a bit of fun. Claire stood and waltzed over to Jasper. She moved her hips side to side and slowly walked forward. “Your right, Jasper.” She traced the outline of his jaw with her fragile, but deadly, nails. He gulped and gazed at her with adoration. “I truly can’t keep my hands off you.” She wrapped her arms carelessly around his waist and breathed in his ear. “Nor can you!”

Jasper trembled at her touch of affection. He felt the light, but course, sensation of her tongue. She pulled it along the very edge of his ear and softly moaned. He turned and watched her out of the corner of his eye. She coyly smile at him and licked his cheek.

She exposed her neck to him and he turned to face her. Jasper softly kissed the crook of her neck and pulled her towards him.

Claire dropped her arms and let him take hold. She cupped one hand over his groin and twisted savagely. He cried out in pain and stood rigidly still for any movement would hurt indeed. Claire gazed down at Jasper as he crumpled to the ground. The others laughed at her cunning show of, “Whose boss?” She let Jasper go and shook her hand in disgust. “God damn you, Claire!” he groaned.

Claire smiled and walked back home. She safer there, well safer than outside. Claire drew the curtains and turned her alarm on for the following day of school. What a terrible day it had been, she growled in frustration.

She walked the short flight of stairs to her room at the end of the hallway. Claire fell on top of her darkly furnished bed. She tried to rub away the sleep from her eyes but it was useless. Claire instantly fell into a deep slumber sprawled out over the comforter of her bed.

Claire shook violently in her sleep. The cold draft from the window made her shiver. She closed it and fell back into the blissful world of dreams.

The sun rose over the horizon of her window and cast a bright yellow glow on her face. Her hair glowed with the intensity of molten gold. Claire felt a small irritation on her nose. She fought the light and waking up. Her alarm didn’t go off so it mustn’t be time yet to wake. The irritation returned and she fought to keep her eyes closed. “Claire, wake up.”

Unfamiliar words and the irritation opened her eyes. The blanket covered her body and she so desperately wanted to sleep. “Claire, get up!” She focused on the people surrounding her bed.

The giggled with delight at her shocked reaction and jumped up and down on the bed around her. Jasper spoke first, “I forgive you.” Claire shook her head in confusion. What for?

“Forgive me! Excuse me, Jasper?” she pointed at him, “I do not like you! I never will! Get it threw your fat head.” She sat up and pulled the blankets to her neck, “I hate you!”

He shrugged and moved up closer, “I know you feel that way, but I thought that you deserved a day off. That’s why I turned off your alarm.” He checked his watch, “Lunch is in a hour, Claire!” she jumped up and ran to the bathroom screaming obscenities at him.

She didn’t bother look to see if she was wearing clothes and ran back out to her dresser. They whistled and howled as she desperately looked for undergarments. Jasper came up behind her and suggested a thong. She growled and grabbed a pair of purple boxers.

“Nice ass, Claire!”

“Damn…”

“Shut up, and leave this house!” Claire roared over their catcalls. Jeans and tank in hand she ran back to the bathroom.

Jasper stuck his foot in the door and came in after her. She pulled up her jeans and sat down on the toilet. “Huh…?” Jasper took seat on the edge of the tub and looked at Claire.

“Why do you hate me?” he asked.

She threw on her red tank and sighed, “I don’t hate you, you just irritate me to the brink of insanity.”

“What was with the play last night then?”

“Do you think I enjoy you telling every living thing I’m your betrothed? I don’t want you, can’t you move on?”

He sucked in a deep breath and gently took her hand. He ground his teeth and left the bathroom. A boy a bit shorter than Jasper reopened the door.

“Hey…Claire, have you seen Natalie?” This was ridiculous, I had to get to school. I was so late! He stood there blocking the exist of her bathroom.

“Jack,” Claire pinched her brow, “she went out on a personal errand.” He nodded. Finally peace, he left the bathroom with a tiny click of the knob. Claire threw her hair up into a quick ponytail. She opened the door and sat down next to Jasper on her bed. He glanced at her curiously and pushed over.

“Claire, do you need a ride?” Nikolas asked.

“Umm…yeah, thanks Nick.” Claire grabbed her bag and coat. “Jasper?” he looked up somberly, “would you mind giving me a ride?” He looked confused but nodded. “Just let me get my shoes.” She sat down closer to Jasper and pulled on a pair of blue flats.

They were in the middle of the woods behind her house. Jasper howled as he took on the change. His bones broke, back curved, and face distorted. Dark brown fur slowly immerged from his pores while he crept up towards Claire.

Jasper may have been a jerk, sometimes, but he was the fastest. Claire climbed on his back and slung her bag over both shoulders. She fondly remembered the times they had done this as kids. Cubs then, but it was a nice memory. “Not too fast.” She whispered next to his cocked ear. He growled and she felt a pressure in her temples.

I’ve never gone too fast!

“Yeah right!”

You just couldn’t hold on! Besides do you want to get there or not?

“Yes,” she grumbled, “just go, then.”

He pounded off through the forest faster than any animal alive. Jasper expertly wove in and out of trees without the slightest nick of Claire’s elbows or knees. Trees flew by and leaves kicked up in their dust.

Jasper slowed just at the border of the school and the forest surrounding it. You’re here, now get off!

“Oh, so…feisty!” She knelt and scratched his ears.

He shook her touch away and growled at the friendly gesture. Jasper watched her walk out into the sunlight and stop to talk to a human. He could hear everything clearer than day.

The human named, Damien, combed his finger through his black hair. “Claire! I thought you were home sick today.”

“Just woke real late. Some ass turned off my alarm.” She turned in the direction of Jasper and he lowly growled.

“Oh…well I saved a seat for you in the lunchroom. Come on!” He went to touch her hand and Jasper pounded out of the brush at him. Furiously, he tried to strike the human to the ground. The boy screamed and fell backwards.

Claire stood between both of them and yelled at Jasper, “Go away, bad Jasper, bad!” she waved her hands in the air, “Shoo!” Jasper crawled back into the shadows but continued to watch them.

“What was that?” The boy leaned on an elbow and sat upright. Jasper watched and growled when Claire helped him to his feet.

“Sorry…that was my dog, Jasper. He must’ve followed me and thought you were trying to hurt me.” She wiped some dirt off his arm and grabbed his hand. They disappeared into the building. Jasper laid down on the soft damp earth. He’d wait there for Claire to return, like a good little dog.

Claire silently cursed Jasper for attacking Damien. She sat down, on one of the orange seats saved for her, next to Damien. “Are you hungry?” Claire raised her head and searched for the person speaking. Damien waved a hand in front of her eyes. She immediately looked up at him.

“Umm…no, thanks.” He nodded and ate his sandwich. Claire gazed off for the rest of lunch and thought of what would have happened to Damien had she left. He’d be torn apart, limb from limb. Jasper was merciless in a hunt. He’d tear high hell through that boy.

“Claire…the bell just rang, it’s time for class.” Claire rose up and walked out the doors.

She stopped at her locker for a textbook. A piece of paper fell out of a crease in the book. She grabbed the carefully folded paper and tucked it in her jeans. Tucked in the back of Claire’s locker was a white rose. It’s crystallized vase twinkling back at her.

Despite her formed intentions, she smiled at the rose, its aroma wafting up her nose and making her cringe with delight. Who did this? Why would someone do this, she didn’t know anyone in particular who’d send her such a gift.

Slowly, the halls emptied with the sound of the second bell ringing overhead. She pulled the vase, containing the rose, out and sniffed the air around it once more.

Out of nowhere, something poked her on the shoulder. Claire accidentally dropped the vase and watched as it smashed on the ground. She frowned at the pieces lying on the floor. How could something so beautiful be so fragile?

Damien rushed around and started to pick up the pieces. “I’m so sorry!” Claire knelt down with him and shuffled some pieces into her palm.

“It’s ok, Damien. Thank you for helping, though.” He smiled at her and continued to gather up the glass. He ran to a nearby trashcan and deposited his load. Claire threw hers away and came back.

Just as she knelt down he cried out in frustration, “Ouch…Damn it!” His hand was bleeding. Claire’s nose shot right in the air. The smell enticed her, that familiar salty smell made her eyes flutter. She turned away from quickly. He laughed, “Just nicked myself.” He wrapped his hand in some tissues out of his bag. He looked at her more carefully, “Claire are you alright?”

Claire rose quickly and babbled, “I’ve got to go…” She ran down the hall and heard him call after her. The smell was just too much; she loved its aroma more than the flower.

***

Damien fell on the floor defeated and picked up the rest of the glass. He sighed and kicked the trashcan. There lying lightly on the floor was her white rose. A couple of leaves had fallen but its beauty was still captivating. She forgot her flower. He picked it up and twiddled it between his fingers.

***

She ran outside and down into the backfield behind the school. Tears streamed across her cheeks, the wind blowing against her face the harder she ran. Claire watched as Jasper ran towards her, still in wolf form. He glided across the field and stopped just short of her.

What’s wrong? She fell to her knees before him and buried her face in his coat. How could she have reacted that way, he probably thought she was mental.

Jasper whined, and held his face from her. His eyes sparkled silver in the afternoon light. Claire? She gazed at him; there was deep concern in his bright eyes. “Can you take me home?” she sobbed. He nodded and knelt before her. Claire hopped on his back and off he went.

***

Damien ran after her to return the rose. She was nowhere; he turned the corner near the backfield and watched her bury her head in the dog’s coat. The very same that attacked him, he moved to give her the rose but she spoke softly to the animal.

Claire got on and watched as they rode off into the woods. The animal moved much faster than he expected, even with Claire! He stood there awestruck and gawked. They disappeared. What the hell?
