Chapter 1

The click of lockers motioned for the end of fifth period. Claire placed her books in her bag and stood to leave the room. At the door, Devin came and handed Claire a folded piece of paper. She didn’t bother to his question the odd gesture.

Her brow furrowed and she glanced down at the paper. Claire unfolded it and saw that it was a picture of a girl sitting in her seat. Expertly drawn; her chin leaned down on her hand demonstrating boredom. She took a more careful look and realized that it was her. She flipped the paper over for anything written. Scratched near the bottom were a poem and two letters.

As black covers dark; so does the pain in my heart,
the pain runs so deep, that the hurt will never sleep,
and as the cold night tries, you fight but break the
silence with your cries, and though you seek release
the pain weighs a ton so deep inside.
But once the music slows you feel the cold wind freeze your lonely soul, and you fight to be brave; but you know you belong as its slave.

(Is she friend or foe?)

Claire read and reread the poem as she strolled down the empty halls. School was over and her classmates were driving away. The two letters at the bottom caught her attention. A.P. Claire’s mind ran through all the possible people whose names matched up. None matched, that she knew of. This minor problem irritated her.

Claire opened the front doors and stepped out into the bright sunlight of a late autumn day. The leaves held the most beautiful colors as they descended towards the earth. She folded the paper up and stuck it in her coat pocket. The wind blew her strawberry-blonde hair around her face. The dark red jacket she wore matched most of the leaves on the ground. How easy it would be to blend in with the crisp Boston background.

Claire opened her car door and hopped in the drivers seat. She threw her bag in the passengers seat and pulled out of the school parking lot. More leaves blew up from the dark pavement as she neared sixty in a twenty-five zone. Her senses zoomed in on every cop within a five-mile radius. There was no reason to slow down on the curvy road. Claire flew around corners like she was in Daytona-500. Her car was a silver bullet, almost flying down the streets.

Less than five minutes later, she pulled into the driveway. Natalie stood carelessly in the open doorway starring off in space. Claire waved her hand in front of Natalie’s glazed over eyes. She instantly snapped out of her momentary mind lapse and gazed up at Claire in astonishment. “When did you arrive?”

Claire rolled my eyes and grinned, “I just got here, how long have you been standing here?”

“Oh…about three hours.” She claimed as if it had no significance whatsoever. Claire nodded and pushed past her. The living room was a complete disaster.

“Natalie! Please clean the living room.” Natalie turned and came in after her. Claire walked into the kitchen and threw her bag in an empty chair. Natalie came in and sat down. She walked back into the living room and lied down on the couch.

The room was neat and perfect. Claire pulled the paper from her coat and examined it again. Natalie’s hand lightly pressed down on her shoulder as she leaned over to see what Claire was looking at.

“What are you looking at?” She reached for the paper and Claire pulled it out of her reach. She flicked over and sat down at the end of the couch. Natalie crossed her arms and looked at Claire from under flickering eyelashes. Claire rolled her eyes and handed her the piece of paper. She clapped her hands with joy and took it out of Claire’s hand. She examined it and turned it over about five times. “Who did this?”

“I don’t know.”

“You might want to let the matter slip. Less Audrey finds out, then it’s a bigger problem.”

“I know, I know. I wasn’t intending on showing her anyway.”

“Good, cause she’d throw a fit and blame you for our immediate downfall.” Claire rolled her eyes at the familiar words and thought of how Audrey would handle this matter. Lord knows it would involve immediate action and pain.

Is she friend or foe? The sentence flew in front of her eyes repeatedly. Could someone possibly know how close they were to the truth? It scared her.

Claire certainly refused to move again. But something deep down kept telling her that this was a minor piece in the big picture. There was more to the puzzle, more to this person that she needed to find out about before she could plan anything permanently.

Natalie handed the paper back and flicked up the stairs. Claire just lied there pondering her decision and situation this, lo’ and behold, piece of paper had put her in. It grew dark outside and she wondered when Audrey would be back. Natalie came down the stairs and stood ridged at the bottom. “We have a visitor…not like us.”

Claire stayed still and didn’t blink a lash. She watched the front door waiting for the bell to ring. The familiar buzzing of the doorbell clanked overhead. She slowly rose to answer it, but Natalie beat her there. Claire just stood in the middle of the living room, an onlooker of sorts without a purpose. Rubbernecking they called it.

She opened the door and leaned out. He was about three inches taller than her. He had broad shoulders, and a solemn face. “Yes, may we help you?” Claire now stood behind Natalie, with keen interest of our late night visitor. He was definitely not like us. His face showed the characteristics of the kind we separated from. He took a deep breath and spoke.

“Do you have a spare room for a lonely voyager?” his voice was deep and low. Natalie’s eyes beamed at Claire, for she was the sole superior when Audrey left. It was Claire decision and hers alone.

“Yes, come on in.” They stepped out of his way and led him past with outstretched hands. He crookedly smiled and nodded his head. “Have a seat.”

He looked around the living room with little interest. He sat there with his hands folded over his legs. Claire slowly lowered her body into a nearby chair and observed him. “I’m Hanna.” she lied. There was no telling why he was here and little reason to tell the truth. She felt a light pressure in her temples and glanced at Natalie. She still stood by the open door, wide-eyed. Claire…he’s not too friendly. I searched his mind and found some very disturbing images. Claire nodded and looked at her guest. He was looking right at her and a slight grin spread across his face.

“I’m Louis.” Lie! Gregory. Thank you Natalie, but I can handle this on my own. Claire’s thoughts roamed the unmasked part of his brain. There happened to be a lot of blood shed. Mostly meals, but some were for pure amusement and others defense. She could feel his mind poking around her head trying to get in. Like hell, he would, and she set up another defense around it.

“I know there is no need for room and board. What do we owe this displeasured confrontation towards?”

He smiled and continued to pressure her mind to open. Claire glared at him and grunted. “Some doors are to be left closed and not opened.” He sighed and gave up. He dug in his pocket and handed her a rolled piece of paper. She slowly grabbed for it. He held it firmer and leaned forward.

“Rude is it to search someone’s mind and not extend the offer.”

Claire glared at him and replied, “My house, my rules!” He tilted his head and nodded in agreement. She looked up at him and then down at the paper.

I solely regret to confirm bad news. Audrey Fiche, for the safety of others, is in a jailed facility. She is currently in the care of the high court. Claire quickly threw her head upwards and leered at the man. “Excuse me?”

He said, “Out of respect for my superior, I have delivered the message. I take no right to address the matter of her capture.” Natalie moved up behind her and read the message. She placed her hand over her opened mouth and gasped.

“This can’t be true!”

Natalie threw herself on the rug and balled. Claire patted her back and looked back at Gregory. His face held no expression. “Could you please, for her sake, tell us how this happened?”

Gregory sat there with a look of discontent on his face and finally divulged the contents of the message further. “She…Audrey was found trespassing in the wood behind my superior, John Danleni’s, estate.” He said the name with respect, but Claire’s face countered it with pure hatred for the name given. He was Audrey’s sole creator. She’d never wanted this life but he forced her into it without a choice. “He, fortunately, gave her a head warning about the matter but she refused to leave. He did give her a warning, and then he set out hunters to bring her down. She fought but they got her anyway.”

Natalie had given up on caring. Her eyes cried but it went no further. The rest of her face held no emotion. “I’m sorry about my rude reaction but could you please leave?” He stood without further instruction and waltzed to the door. He held the handle to close it behind him and then stepped back in.

“I’m really sorry about Audrey.”

“Thank you.” Claire mouthed.

He lightly closed the door behind him and flicked past the window and out of site. She got down on the floor and pulled Natalie towards her. She did nothing and came into her arms. “I’ve got to get her.” She murmured. Claire looked down at her and said, “Do what you think is necessary. I’m going to stay here.” She glanced up at her with big teary eyes.

“They can’t do this to her. That bastard, Danleni, won’t get away with this. I’ll make him pay. I’ll take the matter to the Grand high court. He’ll never win.” Claire rubbed her back and said comforting things. Natalie was so furious that she got up and started pacing the room.

Natalie stopped in mid step and flicked up the stairs. She came back down with a bag and her coat on. Claire had no worries about Natalie. She could handle anything when she was angry. “I’ll probably gone for about a week. Do you think you can handle things here, you know hold down the fort!”

Claire looked her straight in the eye, “I can handle it!” Claire crumpled up the paper in one outstretched hand and flicked it in her direction. Natalie watched as it descended towards the carpet and glanced back up at Claire.

“Don’t do anything rash about this,” She pointed down at the paper and continued, “It isn’t worth it.”

“It isn’t worth it, but it also intrigues me. I love a good hunt. I want to know what this kid knows about me and how he found out.” She shuddered at her following words, “I’m not going to sit around and have some teenage delinquent ruin my life here, cause I refuse to move again.”

Natalie nodded and flicked out the door with nothing more to say. Claire sat there in the chair and figured that she was probably half way there by now. She decided to get a bite to eat.

What would satisfy my hunger? Dog…Cat…Deer? She put on a light jacket and walked in the kitchen and out the back door. Claire walked around the house and into a clearing in the woods. A light breeze lightly tussled the hair around her face. Claire threw her hands in the air and took in a deep breath.

She knelt down on all fours and arched her back. Claire’s bones creaked and her body twisted. Her clothes ripped at there seems and fell to the ground around her. Naked; hair extended from every pore in her body. It covered her face, arms, and legs in dark red fur. She felt the slight pain, more of a tingle now, of her jaw extending and breaking. Claire shook her head and her inhuman eyes shown bright gold in the moonlight.

She tensed for the sound of scurrying animals. A movement in a nearby bush sent quivers of delight throughout her entire body. Meat, blood, kill! When the change occurred, animal instinct took over her body and not her mind. Claire’s hind legs twitched to pounce but she controlled them for just the right moment.

A rabbit flew from the bushes in fearful aggression. Claire pounded after it panting lightly. Trees and earth were lost in the back stream of her movement. Her eyes fluttered with the sweet memory of bloody meat sliding down her mug. Claire gave in to her instincts and tackled the rabbit with her fanged jaw. She ripped its insides out with her teeth. Claire wildly shook her head. A final squeal and the creature died. She proudly devoured the animal and howled into the night.

Claire swiftly turned at a sudden noise. A larger animal fell onto of her and they rolled quickly into the underbrush. She threw herself away and tensed for a second attack. A dark brown animal twice her size came into view. The creature slowly rose and its hind legs twisted back. A low laugh protruded the mouth as he turned human.

“Claire,” he laughed, “out late aren’t we?”

She growled at the familiar voice and knelt to pounce. He sat down on the soft ground and placed his hands on the fallen trees surrounding him. She quickly shied her eyes away for he sat there naked. He laughed and covered himself with a large leave. Jasper! Don’t you dare look! He cackled and put his arms behind his head for the show.

Claire moved behind a tree and her mind completely took over. Her body cracked against the tension of realigning her frame. Her red fur and mug receded. She ripped off some leaves and tied them around certain parts of her body. Claire shortly joined Jasper. She wanted to wipe the smirk right of his tanned face. Jasper stood and circled her, examining her work.

“Nice…but a bit more skin couldn’t hurt.” He ran a long finger over her shoulder blades and blew in her ear.

“Fuck you!” Claire shrugged off his touch and moved away. Jasper’s eyes roamed every part of her covered and he licked his lips. She growled at him, large claws slowly sliding out of her fingernails.

“Feisty…a challenge I have before me.” he circled her, closer this time, and stopped behind her. Jasper placed his hands over her shoulders and his head down on the crook of Claire’s neck. She shivered at his touch. “Claire, why do you flinch from me?” She felt a wry smile neck to her warm cheek.

She haughtily laughed, “Well Jasper, I truly can’t stand you.” He growled, the vibration fluttered through her body.

“Hey Jasper! There you are man…thought we lost you…” a tall frame leaped forward into view, “Oh…woops, sorry J!” Claire moved quickly away from Jasper. He waved at Claire. “Hey Claire.” He purred, “How are you?” Apparently, Jasper wasn’t the worst to fear in these parts. “Nice get-up!”

Claire growled at him and knelt down on all fours. She could hurt him without a second thought. "Get lost, all of you!" she motioned to the others hiding from view, "This is my hunting ground!" She growled and lunged at Jasper.
