Pouring Rayne

*Rayne*I ran as fast as my legs would take me. I heard the pounding of my feet on the asphalt. My lungs strained with each ragged breath I drew in. Behind me, blurry colors came closer as my legs were giving out. This was the hardest I’d ever bothered to try. IsaBella ran up next to me and waved as she passed. She threw back her head, clearly seeing my direct irritation, and laughed. I slowed to a stop and bent over. I detested her extravagant humor. I sat down on a red bench, the paint was chipping off in large chunks and it stuck in my shorts. I wasn’t the best coordinated on my feet and I loathed gym. It was the schools silent torture against me. I figured, if I caught my breath then maybe this time I wouldn’t come in last. However, it was a marvelous day. The sun was lightly coated by the clouds making it the perfect temperature. The leaves were a bright orange and yet some still contained bits of green. Autumn was my favorite part of the year. The heat of summer was over and it hadn’t gotten too cold yet. Autumn was awfully lovely. I would spend hours outside taking pictures of my hometown as it slowly descended towards winter. I live in a picture perfect town, where everyone knows you. Our town resembles the quaint ones you see on postcards. Hallowell, Maine. A dinky town in central Maine. Don’t get me wrong I love it here! All the stores scrunched in one little area on Water Street. It’s pretty in the fall, the leaves coating the sidewalks and all the little helicopters floating down to the earth. My silence was shortly ended by a very angry woman. She blew her whistle at me and raised her arms over her head. I looked up uninterested by her standing there waving like an idiot. Nevertheless, I slowly jogged over towards her and stopped just short of spitting distance. “Rayne, why do you persist to annoy me?” she discontentedly added as she rubbed her temples.“I’m not feeling the greatest Ms. Rimming. May I please be excused?”“Yeah go right ahead. Your no use to me here.”            I ground my teeth together as I walked off the track. Ms. Rimming's not a big positive booster. I stopped and removed my shoes and socks. My toes felt better as I walked over the dewy grass to the main door of the building. Hillbond high school, a place where my hell was lived every day starting at six, sharp. I walked through the blue hallways with the eye irritating color of red lockers. The school board, in my opinion, really needed to revue our school colors. The hallways gave me a constant headache; which lasted until I reached the locker room. It was finally the last period of the day. I sat in a bathroom stall and changed back into my regular clothes. There was writing on the walls claiming someone’s love for another. Personally, I felt that it was cheesy and cliché, but I digress. I opened the stall and ball of blue hit me from the side. IsaBella fell onto of me laughing. “Do you have any idea how long I’ve been waiting for you to come out of that stall?”“I really don’t care right now.” I grumbled. I threw the rest of my dirty clothes in a gym bag and waltzed towards the door. IsaBella stopped just short of the door and blocked my exit. “Hey, what’s up your ass?” face hurt she continued to block me.“Nothing.” I sighed, “I’m just really tired.” IsaBella waved her hand in front of my face, finger extended. “Ms. Rimming has gotten to you, hasn’t she?”I put my back of my hand to my forehead, “I do declare that she has, Bella – Sue! I thank yah kindly for puttin’ it to rest.” My imitation of the southern bell was executed well. She laughed and strung her arm around my neck. We walked up the back staircase singing wildly. “I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you...for all my life.  Imagine me and you, so happy together.” We sang and swung from side to side. The deafening ring of the bell ran through all the halls and rattled the bones of those caught underneath them. We rang the halls with glorious music. Others walked by holding their hands over their ears. We just waved them off and sang even louder. IsaBella blew a kiss at a boy from my chemistry class. I hit her playfully. She winked at him when we skipped by. His face turned red and he dropped all his books. IsaBella pulled me along and laughed at the clumsiness of the teenage boy.Laughing so hard, I let go of her and watched as she skipped merrily down the abandoned hall. She stopped and pounded back for me. “You’ve got to get some exercise girl!”I gasped for breathe and ran along with her skipping. We reached the front doors and flung both open; completely unnecessary but we divulged ourselves anyway. I could see hundreds of kids rushing to their cars in order to escape the retched place behind us. I pulled my keys out and clicked the automatic lock. Peep, peep, the headlights flashed on and off until I put the key in the door. My little green punch buggy’s color reminded me of a bug splatter on a windshield. IsaBella hopped in a car, a few down, with a tall boy. He was caught in her unfortunate web of “This week,”-dating and probably wouldn’t last long. She played with his hair, shortly, and buckled up. They flew out past my dinky car and she blew yet another kiss, this time in my direction. I waved at her and climbed in my car. ***            I slowed the car and cautiously pulled up towards the sidewalk. Inching forward slowly to see who’s parked in the driveway. Oh, man! Daryl’s ugly car stood before me like a beacon of true annoyance.            He unfortunately saw my car and stuck his head out the door. He waved at me, like an idiot, and smiled. I reluctantly smirked and waved back. My mother’s recent boyfriend. Her and father got divorced last fall and I’m stuck with camper boy, at the door, for a week. They’re still finalizing the papers. I pulled in on the left side of his car. It was so tempting to move about a foot over and smash it. My All–American steel versus his Japanese piece of plastic. The crash wouldn’t even dent my car's exterior. I laughed manically in my head, as I imagined hearing the loud crunch of his crappy car. Mine tearing high hell through his, laughing even louder while I did it.He’d put on a smile that would say, “I’m calm, and I’m going to calmly handling this! She’s just letting out unspoken anger, I can handle this calmly.” Then his eye would twitch and he’d continue smiling. I’d coyly smile and mouth, “Sorry!”My happiness was shortly ruined. There he was standing in front of my car waving his arms wildly. “Hey there silly goose, you gonna come in the house?”I sighed, the image fading away slowly. I slammed the car door shut and ran past him with my bag tucked under my arm. I threw open the door and ran up the stairs to avoid an awkward confrontation with him. He yelled up the stairs a few minutes later panting. “Ok, I’ll make dinner. What do you want to eat?”“Nothing, I’m not hungry.” Seriously speaking, I was starving. I’ll never lower myself to eat any concoction he’s willing to make. I’m a vegetarian. He’s meat-licker. I remember the first time my mother brought that piece of filth in the house. She even let him cook. Now I was being a good sport, so I held my tongue. Then, he brought out a big platter with meatloaf covering the inners of it. He set it down and sat in my father’s chair. I looked at my mother and she mouthed, “Sorry honey.” She swung her head towards him and whispered, “She’s a vegetarian.” I just got up and went over to IsaBella’s house. I’ve hated him ever since. Funny, he’s still trying to impress me. I once laughed at his sad attempts but now it’s just pathetic.I grabbed a book and laid down on my big purple bed. I didn’t even read the words. I merely skimmed them. Maybe I could get out of talking to him if I jumped, to my death, out the window. I chuckled about the extremity of the scenario.I thought about that moment while he quietly slipped in my door. He stood there awkwardly and mustered the courage to say something. “So what’s up?” Brow raised in confusion, I grunted, “Nothing.” He leaned back and forth and twiddled his thumbs. “Rayne will you be so kind as to eat with me tonight?” he said it as if I tried to avoid him on purpose. My mind snorted. “Sure, Daryl.” I sighed, “Ah, what are we eating?” He smiled that stupid smile of his. The one where you know, it’s a new recipe. His grin just said too much. “Broiled chicken with parsley for me. As for you a tofu burgers and some fries.” Honestly, it didn’t sound so bad. I nodded and returned to my book. He stood there for a few more minutes looking around and left. I could hear his slippers descend the stairs.A sigh of relief escaped me. I grabbed the phone and dialed up Isabella. It rang four times and then she picked up. “Hey, what are you doin’ tonight?” She giggled, “Get off Phil! Hold on Lizzy!” I heard struggling and the phone get knocked. “Hey! I’m sorry, what?”I repeatedly asked, “What are you doin’ tonight?”“Oh nothing, why?”“I’m stuck with Daryl. Do you want to hang out after five?”“Sure” Giggle, “Get off!”“I’ll leave you to wrestle with Phil. K!”“K, Bye Rayne!”“Bye Bells.”Click, the phone went dead. I held there for a minute and got ready to leave before dinner. Dark purple tank, a black mini skirt, and my favorite necklace. The silver chain hung around my neck perfectly. Sun and moon coinciding near the end. I loved the necklace. My father gave it to me on my sixteenth birthday. I sat on the edge of my bed and pulled up fishnet tights. I ended by lacing up converse shoes. Purse in one hand, I closed and locked the door. I did not want him snooping around in my stuff! I felt much better now that I was dressed to kill.  Hardly missing a beat, I jumped down the stairs and ran in the kitchen. I scared the shit out of Daryl, who dropped a pan in passing. “All dressed up are we?” I grabbed a tofu burger and bun off the table. “Uhh huh!” I mumbled after licking ketchup off my hand. “I’m goin’ out with IsaBella after dinner.” He nodded and sat down across from me. “Your going out. It’s gonna be cold out, you should dress warmer.” Which was code for, “Your going outside like that? Wear something normal, please!” I sneered at him and smiled. “I’m ok, really! I love the cold.” Not my best come back but it’d have to do.He sighed and ate his dead bird. My lip curled in disgust and I turned away. “I’m sorry but I can’t watch you eat that I’ll be back before dawn.”“You’ll be back before midnight!” Voice raised; he looked surprised that I’d even consider dawn as a time frame. I raised my hands in defense, “I’m just kidding, jeez! This is what I’m wearing, it’s not like were walking!”Daryl sighed and repeated, “Midnight. Call if you are going to be late! You had better have a good excuse why.”  I grab for my coat and slam the door behind me. Ass, who does he think he is? I am certainly not his kid! *Night Out*            I drove to IsaBella’s house and honked the horn five times. She fell out the door laughing with Phil. I anxiously tapped my fingers on the steering wheel. They were both drunk! Completely smashed, I’m surprised they had the cooperation to stand. IsaBella opened the back door and threw Phil in. He laughed so hard that he eventually fell off the seat. She giggled quietly in the front seat.             Why’d she have to bring him? He’s a good for nothing piece of crap. IsaBalla’s always dated dead beats. I sighed and pulled away. The tips of my fingers had gone numb. My nail hurt, I’d dug the wheel so hard they became red and irritated.             IsaBella pulled a small bottle out of her corset and took a swig. “Bells! Put that damn thing away!” I smacked the open bottle loose and it landed on the carpet. “Great now my cars gonna smell like I got wasted.”            “Jeez chill! You didn’t have to knock it away, that was my only shit left.” She snorted and pulled out yet another bottle. The bottle was under her skirt hidden from sight. She lifted up the skirt and I could see a holder neatly tucked over her nylons. Isabella wiggled the bottle in front of my face mockingly. I grabbed for it but she pulled away. “My car, my rules!”            “My booze, you loose!” She laughed up a storm. Which made the monster on the floor join in. “Bells, I swear to god if one more person pisses me off, I’m driving straight to the police station.” She waved a finger up at me, “You wouldn’t dare.” I stopped the car and swung around. “Stop, stop, I promise we won’t make you mad.” I nodded and turned back on the road. Phil’s head peaked up next to my seat. “What’s going on?” IsaBella turned and motioned him quiet. He shakily copied her and fell back down. IsaBella looked at me and smiled. She unbuckled and flung herself in the backseat. “No more laughing, no more fun! If you show you teeth or tongue you’ll have to pay the consequences.”            I glanced over my shoulder and wished I hadn’t. They were on one end of the seat, curled up; doing something my poor seat endured. I threw her damn purse at them. They stopped shortly and continued. Thankfully, there wasn’t any noise; they held their part of the deal.             I pulled up behind an old abandoned paper mill. Bikes and cars littered the areas around my car. I slapped a sticker on the hood of my car. Don’t touch, Spare! The sticker provided destruction immunity.            Last time I had been here, there was a huge explosion. Fred had forgot the sticker rule and they blown up his car with firecrackers. They also dropped a refrigerator from three stories on it.            Lost in thought. I left Phil and IsaBella to finish! I hopped over a shit load of debris and down into an underground tunnel. People before me had dug it out. Easier access, I guess. I pulled out a lighter and flicked the metal pieces. Come on! Work lighterwork! Light illuminated the tunnel. Eyes adjusted I looked around at the walls. What is it with people? They always write stupid crap wherever they can. Give them a crayon and they’re on it!            “Hey Rayne wait up! You left us back there without a lighter!” I turned and the light showed further down the tunnel. I could see two people coming towards me. IsaBella was in lead and Phil slightly after her. His arms draped around her waist and his head was kissing her neck. IsaBella shoved him away and ducked next to me. “You never said we were going to Hell’s nail! Sly fox you are, my dear!” I rolled my eyes and continued up the passageway. IsaBella pushed on ahead of me and climbed up the makeshift ladder. Wood wrapped with clothes and anything else to come by. Phil stood beside me and lifted her skirt with a stick. I hit him in the chest and gave him a dirty look. “What? It’s not like I haven’t seen it before!” he smiled. I motioned him to go next. He shook his head, Smiling, and pointed at me. I watched in disgust as his eyes dropped.             “Excuse me! I think not! You go first!” He frowned and climbed the ladder huffily. What the hell? He’s been going out with her for about a week. Like I’dhonestly? I’m not a whore! I climbed the ladder and looked around. I could hear the dull sound of music vibrating the structure. Dust fell in piles off the ceiling as people shuffled over. Jerks couldn’t even wait!             I jumped up and ran to the emergency stairs. HmmDerek must have placed up the wall padding. When we arrived, I couldn’t hear anything going inside. Great!             I climbed the stairs and placed my hands on the door before me. My purse swung on my outstretched arm. My light violet hair blew in front of my eyes. Instead of poking me, the person behind me, blew on me. Probably so I wouldn’t fall. I glanced around and did a double take. A few stairs behind me stood a boy. He was taller than I, even on the stairs below. I had never seen him before, but he seemed oddly familiar. He sported black hair, blue eyes, and a body to kill.             “Are you going in?” his hand motioned for the door. His voice was smooth and calm. I had never seen someone like that so cool and collected. I smiled dumbly and opened it to a massive noise. The noise knocked me back into his chest.             He caught me with one arm and threw me ahead laughing. I stumbled into the wide-open space. People were everywhere. The music was so loud my ears hurt. I walked around and studied the place, I’d only been here once and it had changed. The windows had iron bars around them. There was no trace of light except that from strobe lights.            I wandered over to the counter that housed every drink ever created under the sun. “Can I get a beer?” I slapped some money down and grabbed for the cold can. A hand wrapped around my hand and took the beer out of it. “Hardly a distinguishing drink!” He gave the person back my beer and ordered a Bloody Mary. He handed it to me and grabbed my wrist. “Excuse me, what are you doing?” I pulled my hand out of his grip and walked swiftly for the away. I went in search of IsaBella, but she was nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately, I came across Phil. I leaned closer and asked if he’d seen Bells. He had no idea where she was. “Hey let’s dance!” His face lit up with his idea. “No thank you, if you see Bells tell her I’m by the bar.” I turned to walk away and felt a hand on my butt. I turned and Phil grabbed me around the waist.“Who cares about IsaBella?”“I do! Let go of me!” He held tighter and tried to kiss me. “IsaBella means nothing to me! You do, you mean the world to me.” I pushed his face away and slapped him hard. “Bitch!” He held his cheek in shock. He went to hit me back but a hand came out and stopped his movement towards me.He held him at bay with one hand and looked at me, “You ok?”I stumbled for words, “Yeah.”He turned back on Phil, eyes fierce as hell, “You do not hit a lady!”“Piss off!” Phil spit in his face and laughed. The guy flinched at the impact of the spit and punched Phil in the face. He hit him so hard Phil fell unconscious. He left Phil on the ground and turned and looked at me. His face was full of sympathy.“Thank you.”“Your welcome.” I walked away and left Hell’s Nail without finding Bells. Who did Phil think he was? I walked down the stairs, careful not to fall, and down the hole in the floor. I got back in my car and placed my head on the steering wheel. This was a bad idea from the start. Hell’s nail! What a crock of crap! Full of creeps. The sky darkened as the sun started to set beyond the horizon. I pulled out my camera and captured its beauty. Startled by a tapping on the window I glanced up. There he was again! I rolled down the window, just enough so he couldn’t shove a hand through. “You forgot your drink.” I sighed and grabbed the beer out of his hand. “Drinking and driving really don’t mix.” He had one eyebrow raised and was leaning casually against the tough metal off my bug. “Yeah I know. I’d planned to stay long enough for one beer to settle. So it was safe to drive.” He shrugged his shoulders; I could tell he wasn’t buying any of it. “What I do is none of your business.” My face was growing red from embarrassment. Just remembering Phil try to kiss me made me want to barf.“I know, just trying to help.” He moved from leaning and walked back to the hole. I rolled down the window and yelled, “I don’t need your help!” He turned and nodded quaintly. Mouthing “Yes, you do!” “Who are you?” I yelled after a long silence. He shrugged; apparently, he didn’t know his name either. Furious I pulled away and went home, leaving the love birds to screw in peace. ***            I pulled in the driveway just after sunset and walked up the front stairs tears streaming down my face. Daryl was sitting in the living room chair, newspaper in hand. He folded it to see me and jumped up. I must have looked worse than I felt. My face red, tears streaming freely, and a ripped skirt to match. I felt like shit. “What’s wrong? What the hell happened?”             I threw my purse down and yelled, “Nothing! Just leave me alone!” I ran up the stairs in a fit and slammed my door shut. I drank the beer, hands shaking wildly. He knocked quietly and asked if he could come in. I growled, “No.”            I don’t need anybodies help! I’m fine the way I am! Nothing about me needs change. Just Phil’s whole persona, the way he made me feel, it angered me! This was all absurd! “Please!” I turned my attention back to the door.             “Fine!”            He opened in slowly, probably afraid of being attacked. He should be afraid! “What’s the matter?”            “Nothing”            “You come home looking madder than hell and not expect me to care!”             “Why should you care? Your not my dad!” I really wished I hadn’t said that. I put up with Daryl for my mother’s sake. He sighed and walked to the edge of the door. “Sorry, to bother you then. I know I’m not you father but I just want to make sure your safe. You’re my responsibility and if anything bad happened to you,” he paused, “I’d feel awful. This may not matter to youbutI love you.”            With that, he left my door slightly ajar and walked away. I felt horrible. I left IsaBella without a ride, upset Daryl, and drank the last of my beer too quick!***            I have to get Bells! It’s almost three in the morning and she hasn’t called. I probably left around eight or so. She’s been there for about five hours. IsaBella is going to be really pissed!             Coat on, I tip toed down the staircase and opened the front door quietly. I hopped in the bug and drove back to Hell’s Nail quickly. I sped faster than necessary since there were no cops in sight. ***            Hell’s Nail stood before me like a dark clocked person. Scary and intimidating but a lot of fun. The sticker still stood on my car protecting it like a simple barrier.  I hopped down the hole and ran without a lighter on. Up the stairs and opened the door to the nightclub. There were very few people left, but threw the smog lights I could clearly see Bells sitting at the foot of a boy. Her head dropped back against his calf and she wobbled forward. She laughed quietly and righted herself. I walked over to her pounding my feet. Phil held up her head as she puked all over the cement. “You’ve returned. Fabulous now the party can really take off.” Phil looked a little woozy himself but she was my main concern. “Get up IsaBella we're leaving!” She looked at me and motioned for quiet. Bells pointed behind her and wavered herself up. She leaned against me and whispered, “Shh” A rotten smell of puke and beer hit me hard. “Teddy bears eat berries. (Hiccup) You ready. How was your night, baby?” I pulled her away from me and grabbed under her arm. “Love, your totally smashed!” She giggled, bit her knuckle, and nodded in agreement. “Let’s go!” I started to pull her away but a voice rang out from behind. “You’re leaving, again!” There was much sadness in his words. I turned with Bells still in my arms, “Yeah, I never really arrived anyway due to roaming hands.”“What’s your name? We seriously have to hang out sometime!”“Phil shut up!” He was so hammered that he couldn’t even remember me. “Sorry, I don’t have one!” IsaBella hit me hard in the chest. “Of course you do! Her name is Rayne!” She smiled at me, as if she’d done me a favor. “Rayne.” He said the word and savored it in his mouth. He repeated it again.I pulled IsaBella away and down the stairs. She shrugged me off and grabbed the handle for support. I hurried down in front of her, “Hurry up it’s almost dawn!” “Dawn!” She quickened her pace and wobbled down the hole. We both ran to the car. Even half drunk she could still out-run me. I jumped in and pulled out. She waved at the building like it had feelings. I drover her home and helped her inside. Her parents were very religious Catholics, and if they caught her coming home near five in the morning, I’d never see her again!I tucked IsaBella in bed and tip toed past her parent’s room. Down the stairs and out the door.
