Dear readers: i feel like a complete idiot this is supposed to be section 6 and i cant believe i left it out. it kind of helps with how section 6 begins. it does have some important info in it. srry for the inconvenience .
She hopped out of bed and walked towards her closet. She pulled a black hoody over head and made her way to the window resting above her bed. As she undid the latch she was careful not to make any noise. The window slid up slowly and she slid her legs out. She let herself down the short distance. Her bare feet rested on the grass as she shut the window. The grass was slightly wet hinting it was almost morning. She wouldn't have much time before she would have to return home.
She walked down the sidewalk humming to herself. This was the only time of day that she was able to feel calm. One foot in front of the other she paced herself. As she reached the wall that held the last sector together she pressed her ear against it. Sometimes she thought she could hear water running on the other side. Other times she heard large cracks in the sky, but she was taught that their was only sand. She was always curious what sand felt like and why they wouldn't let people go beyond the last wall.
She sighed as she began to walk back home. Suddenly she tensed up. Soft footsteps could be heard moving towards her. She shifted towards the shadows. When she felt she was completely hidden she waited. A boy about her age walked towards the wall. She just watched. He rested his ear on the wall. He was doing exactly what she had just done moments ago. She stared in shock and that's when she realized she knew the boy.
“Cody?”she whispered.
The boy jumped back and squinted into the shadows, “Who's there?”
“Cody, is that you?”
“Yes, I'm Cody. Who are you?”
She stepped into the light and his expression relaxed.
“I'm so glad it's you.”He chuckled still somewhat tense.
“What were you doing?” She asked making sure it was what she thought.
“Well,”He paused checking his surroundings and then lowered his voice more, “I was listening to the other side.”
“Oh.” She smiled and walked to his side. “It's okay. What do you think I was doing out here?”
He grinned.
“I'm just surprised you came all the way out to the Black Sector.” She mumbled.
He frowned as he stared at his feet.
“What?”
He looked up and faked a smile, “I guess you didn't know that I live here too.”
She stared in shock, “What? What are you talking about?”
He stared back at her, “You really didn't know?”
“No.” She shouted and stormed off.
“Madison, where are you going?”
She didn't know exactly why, but she was angry. Maybe it was because she hadn't been informed about his living were abouts or maybe the fact he hadn't done anything to show her that she wasn't the only Black Sector Scum. Or even the fact that she had to suffer through school because of where she lived and he never had said anything to stick up for her. She just continued to walkaway.
“Madison.” He ran after her, “Stop.”
Tears had formed at the edge of her eyes, “Cody, how could you...how could you not tell me?”
Her back still faced him, but he cringed at the sound of her voice.
“Madison, I couldn't. No one else knows.”
“You couldn't tell anyone else? You're just like all the other guys. Worried about their rep. I can't believe...I thought you,”She paused and took a deep breath lowering her voice, “I thought you were different.”
“Ma...”
“Don't.”She continued her exit. She finally reached her house and as she did earlier she tripped over the curb, but this time distracted by the strange emotions running through her head. As if she was on her mattress she curled up on her side facing away from the now rising sun. She let the few tears fall down her cheeks catching a few at the edge of her mouth.
“Madison.”Cody stood at the edge of the curb.
She sat up wiping her eyes and the wet streaks that covered her face. She couldn't face him now. She dusted off her sweats and fixed her hair as best she could. The window wasn't far, so she made her way toward it.
“No, Madison,please.”
She turned her head and her body slowly followed, “Why should I?”
“I just want to talk to you.”
“We've talked enough.” She pushed her window up and tried climbing in. Unfortunately, she fell back. He rushed to catch her although it was a short distance to the ground he made it. She landed with grunt in his arms. “Put me down.”
He set her back on her feet and watched as she climbed back through the window. “Madison, I'm really sorry.”
She leaned over the window sill and said, “A few people have said that to me today and it's a bit worn out.”
