Once the two girls were sitting in the back of class they started to hear the whispers of gossip float around the class. They pulled their chairs so their backs were to each other and there was a desk with their books and bags sitting in front of them. They placed their headphones into their ears and tuned everyone out. Unfortunately, someone had to throw a folded piece of paper onto that exact desk. Out of curiosity, Beliz decided to open it. The room fell silent and all eyes turned to the back as she reached for the paper.
Attention seekers. It's all they are. It's all they'll ever be. No one cares what they do to themselves. They could die and no one would cry. They could live and no one would realize they had. It's their fault anyway.
It was obvious Beliz was crushed even if she tried to hide it. She wanted to cry and Madison saw that. She quickly grabbed the paper and crumpled it up, “Pure poetry. That's real talent right there. Too bad no one cares. Speaking of poetry, I just rhymed.”
Beliz smiled. She knew her friend was trying to cheer her up. They returned to their positions and replaced the headphones into their ears. The other students followed suit and waited patiently for the teacher; who was late. Again. The silence was broken by the teacher shoving the door open and dropping his supplies on to the table with a loud thump.
“Hello, class. Sorry I'm late. Again.” He started to search through his box of supplies. “I was trying to find everything I needed to tell you guys about our class trip.”
He pulled out some fliers and began to hand them out. “Who has ever been to the Botanical Gardens?”
No one moved. People swore they had heard a cricket. Ha. Anyway, he continued on, “Okay, this will be good then. Now that everyone has a flier I would like you all to pull out the permission slip. As you all should know you have to have your parents permission to go on class field trips otherwise you will get left behind. I will need these by tomorrow seeing as we are leaving on Friday.”
That darn cricket started to chirp again. Natural History class wasn't always the most exciting thing in this world and I really do feel for the kids having to take it this year. As the teacher began to open his book the bell rang. As normal high school students do everyone picked up their stuff and left right at that moment.
Once in the hallway Beliz said,“You know, your parents are never going to sign that permission slip.”
“Yeah, I know, but I don't really wanna go anyways.”
“What are you talking about? Your always trying to find ways to leave. Always wanting new experiences. Then you get one and you reject it?”
“It's nothing special. It's the Botanical Gardens. Woopdy doo. It's in the middle of no where. Besides we all went in kindergarten.”
“Yeah, but we haven't gone with high school boys before.” Beliz said nudging Madison in the side.
“Ha. Ha. But you know it wouldn't matter, at least for me, who ever we went with.”She stressed the “at least for me” part. Beliz didn't continue on understanding her friends feelings towards herself. Instead she decided to poke at her about her feelings towards this other guy in school. Beliz slowed her step a bit choosing her words wisely.
“I hear Cody's going.”Madison paused, then continued on towards her locker. Beliz knew she had hit the bullseye. Madison's locker was below Beliz' so Madison always let Beliz go first, but instead she just plopped down right in front of it. “Something wrong, Maddy?”
Madison glared at her friend and then went to open her small locker. It took her a few frustrating tries before the lock clicked. Beliz knew she had hit a rough patch when she mentioned Cody, but at the moment she thought it would help. She was terribly mistaken. “Maddy, I'm sorry. I thought that you would want to go more if I told you he was coming.”
“No, it's just if he's there everything's going to be weird. I don't wanna go.”She whined. Beliz knelt beside her friend giving her a gentle hug. “Ready to go to math?”
Beliz smiled, “You bet.”
She was forgiven and they wouldn't need to discuss it any further. That's how their friendship worked. Forgive and forget, unlike many other friendships between most teenage girls. Another reason I love being able to observe Madison.
They entered their math class together, but unlike Hagins' class they were assigned seats. Beliz in the way front and Madison in the way back. They also had to sit in pairs and this is were Madison had met Cody for the first time. He was also one of the few people who had complimented her on her Uniform Debauchery Day. He had told her she looked cool and then on she's been hooked. Sad, really.
Madison took her seat staring out the window. She decided to take a short nap seeing as she hadn't gotten much sleep last night. (Her parents again. Screaming and shouting, blah, blah, blah.) She rested her head on the table and was able to doze off for awhile before someone had to tap her on the shoulder.
“What I'm trying to sleep?”She had forgotten where she was for a moment, but before she had thought about it the words slipped out.
“We can see that Miss Edwards, but can you answer my question and I'll promise to let you go back to your nap.”
She sat up and waited for his question.
“What are Newton's three laws?”
“That doesn't make any sense we're in math class.”Madison looked up at Beliz who was smiling. Apparently, she had gotten it right.
“Good job, Miss Edwards. You at least no where you are now.” The class started to giggle. She didn't care she just laid her head back down on the desk.
“You know he wouldn't pick on you if you payed attention.”Cody whispered.
Madison didn't move, “I know, but the class wouldn't be so enjoyable if he didn't have someone to pick on, now would it?”
She turned her head towards him to see if he had heard her. He grinned and continued taking notes. “Your really cute.”
He turned back, “What?”
“Did I just say that out loud?”He nodded and she blushed, “My bad. Professor Allen, may I be excused?”
“Tell me the answer to the problem and you can leave.”Maddy picked her book up and walked out the door. She then popped her head back in, “X equals five.”
