Chapter 8

Sila

We're officially together and I couldn't be happier. Especially with my mother's blessings. I know we're only dating, but there was something there that told me it was going to last a long time. I just wanted to scream I was so happy.

I took him the Whyte Garden and showed him my secret hiding place. No one knew about it. Not even my mother. I found it when on my eighth birthday it was a big room underneath the Whyte Garden. The walls were made of a white stone and the floor was white marble. There were a few hole in the wall to let light in. I haven't been there since my ninth birthday, but I still remembered how to get there. I pulled Roger out of my room and took him across the hall making sure that no one was watching. I pushed on part of the wall and it slid open. We walked down a flight of stairs that wrapped around a smooth cylinder of wall in silence.

When we finally reached the bottom Roger broke the silence, “Where are we going? I've never seen this place before.”

“No one has except me.” I pushed against the wall again and another door slid open bringing us to a long hallway. I walked straight to the other side, but Roger slugged along behind.

“What is this place?”

“A secret.”I said as I waited for him to catch up with me.

“What's with all the mysteriousness?”He asked finally catching up with me, but I didn't reply I just walked through the wall. He musted have been shocked to see me walk through the wall because I waited a few moments before he actually walked through himself even with that he didn't put his whole body through right away. I finally grabbed his arm and pulled him through. This was supposed to be a happy moment and I was starting to get irritated. “Hurry up we don't have all day.”

“Well it would help if you would tell me where we're going.”

“We only have a little bit farther.” I could hear him mumbling something under his breath and then he sighed.

He didn't like me keeping secrets from him. I knew from experience. I had kept a secret about me finding a kitten in the forest and I took it to my room and he found her and through her out because he didn't know it was mine. I hated him for getting rid of my cat and he hated me for screaming at him because he didn't know. I regret yelling at him now, but he still could have asked me about it first.

I was now walking through my favorite part of the hall to get to my hiding spot. The walls were made from a smooth rock that felt like feathers when you touched it and the floors were a black marble with white streaks that looked like lightening against the dark rock. On the ceiling there was a glass circle that if you looked through it you could see the little pond in the Whyte Garden that held the Whyte Coy. It was beautiful in the garden, but I always loved this place more. I stood under the Coy Pond and watched the large fish swim circles around each other. I felt him stand beside me and look up at the fish. It was silent again and it was kind of comforting.

Roger

The giant fish swimming above our heads were hypnotizing. They just kept swimming around each other. I got me wondering if they ever stopped swimming or if they just continued in circles all of their lives.

I woke up from my spellbinding and watched Sila for a few minutes before asking her again, “Why won't you tell me where we're going?”

She looked down after staring for a moment longer. “I don't want to.”

“Why?”

“It's my secret. Mine. I chose to share it with you, but I can still turn back.” She had fire in her eyes.

I took her hands and stared at her, “Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know how important this was to you.”

The flames started to settle down, but I could still see she was upset. What does she want me to do? “Sila, I don't want to fight with you, please.”

She finally looked me in the eyes, “Okay, I'm sorry I've been acting the way I have. I didn't mean to. I jus..I just wanted to show you the inner me, but I didn't think I would get defensive about it.”

I took her in my arms feeling very relieved, but I felt something a little more. It was a weird feeling, but I kind of liked it. I didn't know exactly what it was. Maybe it was a deeper understanding of who she was. I lifted her head and kissed her gently on the lips causing her to grin. “Come on, princess show me the way.”
