-Chapter Fifteen-
“I like her.” Alejandro said simply after Becca trotted out of the room.
“Oh yes, she’s a real peach.”
“Come on it’s obvious she is only doing those things to get under your nerves. I mean did you see all the raised brows and smirks she was giving you?”
My teeth gnashed together and I closed my eyes. “Yes, I did happen to notice.”
“I would too if you left me with two stiffs in some city.”
“Yeah, I am sure it was so terrible I mean they might’ve given her exactly what she wanted; oh the horror.” I said with a fake shiver and Alejandro rolled his eyes.
“You know what I mean.”
“Really? I wasn’t aware that I did.”
“Must you always be so sarcastic?”
“No but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to be.”
“Oh Jackie, when will you finally understand the difference between acting and the truth.” He replied, shaking his head.
I snorted. “What do you mean? I act all the time.”
“Then you should at least know when people are pretending. You seriously think she hates you? Well then you just fell for the lie. It is so obvious. I used to have an ex-girlfriend like that.”
“Just how many girlfriends have you made out with on—?”
“None whatsoever,” he interrupted with a sharp glance at Tico who was if anything half listening while he smoked his pipe.
I choked back laughter and nodded. “Let’s get back to your girlfriend. So how do I deal with someone who is acting?”
“Ex- girlfriend and you don’t have to do anything really. Try not to get angry but don’t ignore them because that just proves that they are under your skin.”
“So you’re telling me the only way to get her to stop is to not get angry at her antagonizing comments.”
“Well, it’s not like she means what she says… remember it’s all an act.”
My voice was grudging and cynical. “Great.”
“Hey, do it if you want, all I did was just tell you the proper way to do it.” Alejandro defended standing up and walking off of the porch to join the woman in the kitchen. “Hola ladies.” I heard him say before the door shut.
“It’ll work.” Tico said through a small puff.
“Yeah it will but it’ll be hard.”
“Not really.”
“For you I bet you invented the word calm.”
He laughed but got up. “Poppet, it really won’t be that hard.” Tico assured patting my shoulder as he too joined the others inside.
I sighed and stared at the ocean. In my letter it was a lie. The sunsets were starting to get old. I missed the sunrises you get to see during the wintertime. That is the only time I really get to see them since I am not the earliest riser.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” My father said behind me but I didn’t reply. “I know you probably didn’t want to see us but Lupe insisted on us staying here and we couldn’t refuse.”
“You couldn’t? That’s strange you can say no if you want to.”
“We couldn’t, doll.” He pointed out but it didn’t really matter to me who was to blame.
“Whatever.”
“I am you’re father you know and I do happen to like to see my children.”
“Yeah, well I wish you weren’t.”
“Oh really?” Disbelief colored his voice and I could hear a trace of amusement. He thought it was funny! “You know, your mother asked for you.”
I suddenly became very still. Air seemed to have been lost as the reality hit me.
“What?” I whispered.
“Yeah, her lawyer told me that she has been good for the past month and has been rewarded to have visitors. Instead of being barricaded behind a glassed window you will be able to chat with her in a cafeteria type room. I already met with her.”
“You mean anytime I want to, I can see her?”Giddiness shined through my eyes.
“If she stays good,” he corrected but I was too happy to care.
“I want to see her now!” I practically jumped up but he rested his arm over my shoulder.
“How about when we go back to Warwick I will drop you off in New York to see her?”
“And when will that be?”
“In two weeks and it just so happens I have an extra ticket—”
“Wait,” I interrupted with slanted eyes. “You knew I’d want to come?”
“Well, I figured you would be missing Cat.”
“Of course I am! She is still my damn mother!”
“No need to shout or curse.” My father warned with an annoyed look in his eye. A sixteen year old daughter really shouldn’t be swearing at her father but I was too excited to care. I could wait two weeks, even if my impatience killed me. It just meant that every day I would be closer and closer to her.
“Oh hello.” Hal said his tone awkward. I looked up at him to see who he was talking to and followed his eyes over to someone standing on the porch steps.
“Sonny!” I exclaimed hugging him. We were all more than shocked at my reaction but I couldn’t help it I was just crazed from the thought of seeing my mom. I leaned away from him to read his expression. He almost looked frightened. “Sorry.” I apologized and then turned around to smile sheepishly at my father.
Hal cleared his throat, eyeing me strangely. “I am Hal, Jackie’s father and you are?”
“Sonny.” I was once again surprised to hear his husky voice.
“I will let you two get acquainted while I get Allie. Oh and dad,” I leaned closer to him, “he doesn’t talk much.”
I went inside the kitchen to find Alejandro impressing Liza with his muscles. God, he just couldn’t wait to let the guests know that he lifts weights.
“Come on Mr. Muscles, your partner in crime is outside.” I said dragging him out the door to see my father trying to converse with Sonny.
“You know she is pretty.” He whispered in my ear. I almost gagged.
“She’s in her thirties.”
“Old people can be easy on the eyes too.”
“Whatever.” I sighed trying to forget what he said.
“Hey Sonny,” my cousin said before switching to Spanish. I could only get out a few words but I could tell my father didn’t understand it one bit.
“Nice to meet you too,” he muttered walking back into the house. I chuckled lightly and so did the two of them.
“That got rid of him.” Alejandro said and Sonny nodded.
“Wow you’re real nice to your guests.”
“Especially the pretty ones,” he replied, wagging his brows at Liza through the glassed door.
“Ugh.” I groaned. “So what if she was heavy and ugly, what would you do then?”
“Roll her down the stairs.” I blinked a few times before going into hysterics. It took him seconds before he too was roaring with laughter. Sonny was the only one who had a smile on his face.
“You’re horrible!” I shouted once my giggles were under control.
“Yeah, I know.”
“Guess what?” I said after a minute. I didn’t even wait for him to answer before I blurted out that I was going to see my mom.
“Really? That’s nice.”
“It’s more than nice it is fantastic!”
“I don’t know what it would be like if I couldn’t see my mom.”
“Aww… so you would miss her?” I questioned but he shrugged.
“I guess, I mean who else is going to cook? My papi?”
“You really are horrible!” I repeated whacking his shoulder and making him and Sonny snicker.
“Like I told you before, I know.”
“But I have to agree… she is a great cook.”
“Why else do you think Sonny just happens to arrive around suppertime?” He said and Sonny gave him a small but sheepish smile. “See! It is true!”
“Oh, great it is nighttime already.” I muttered, making the light mood sour.
“Please she won’t be that bad when she sleep.”
“That’s the problem, she doesn’t sleep.”
