-Chapter Thirteen-
I found that when Sonny wasn't annoying the hell out of me with his silence, he was actually pretty funny. He made all these hilarious expressions without giggling like Alejandro and I. When he had to go it was a bummer because the house was once again quiet.
"He is certainly one in a million, isn't he?" She asked after he had left and I nodded.
"I haven't met anyone like him, that's for sure."
"So do you..." Lupe trailed off and I rolled my eyes and tried not to blush.
"Just as a friend," I assured her but she didn't seem convinced. "But I really do just like him as a friend."
"Whatever you say, bella."
"But I do!" I whined but she was already leaving the room. I groaned and tried to suppress my rage. Why can't a guy and a girl be friends without people thinking the other way? Alejandro entered in the back door from the deck and I turned to him frantically. "You don't think I like Sonny, right?"
"No... but I may think otherwise now..." He replied slowly.
"No of course I don't but your mother doesn't believe me."
"Ah, it doesn't matter she's always trying to play matchmaker." Alejandro grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and drank it in one gulp.
"Ew." I scorned but he didn't seem to hear me as he threw it away. "Someone was thirsty."
"Yeah well I am going to go to bed. Later." I was suddenly the only one in the kitchen again. I was usually not a fan of being alone but lately it seemed nice.
I immediately found myself missing my mom. I really wish I could see her. I wasn't worried at all about the fact that she was in prison with probably some really brutal women because I knew she could handle herself. She may not be tall like me but she was definitely not weak.
"Wouldn't it be cute though?" I hear Lupe's voice say from the other side of the wall and I pressed my ear against it to eavesdrop.
"If you say so, but if you won't mind I would like to go up to bed. Noches, mi amor." Tico replied and I could imagine him giving her a peck on the cheek before the stairs started to creak.
Wait... wouldn't it be cute though, she better not be talking about Sonny and me. Oh, that woman!
"Eavesdropping, again? What an unattractive thing to do." I jumped up and smacked my head against the cupboard. Lupe entered the room with a tsk while I was still rubbing my head.
"I don't like Sonny." I said through tight lips and she gave me a strange expression.
"You thought...? Oh, niña, I wasn't talking about you." She gave me a small laugh before turning over to the sink and washing her hands.
"Then what were you talking about?"
"That, my dear Jackie, is none of your concern."
"But... fine." I gave up with a loud hmph and crossed my arms over my chest.
"It would still be nice if you did like him though." Her husky voice was low and my shrill whine easily overpowered it.
"Lupe!"
"I was just saying..." She whipped her soapy hands in the air and grabbed a towel along the left side of the table. "I mailed the letter earlier so hopefully they will get it soon and reply."
"Yeah, they will definitely reply." My voice dripped with sarcasm but she acted as if I hadn't said anything.
"I don't know about you but I am feeling awfully sleepy. Have happy dreams Catalina." She didn't seem to catch her mistake until she was in the doorway. "I mean Jackie." A smile was curled across her lips and I couldn't help but smile back.
I really did look just like my mom; I just was taller and had hazel eyes like my father. Ever since I could remember people were always comparing me to my mother.
Soon after I followed everyone else and went up to my bed. I turned on a dim light and reached for my pajamas. Once my night clothes were covering in I flicked the light off and crawled eagerly into my bed. I wasn't exactly tired but it would feel nice to sleep.
Becca was staring at me, her gray eyes slits. I kept repeating apologies to her but she only laughed and ran the opposite direction. I reached out to her and shortly followed after. She was so close to me I could've reached out and touched the skim of her dress.
Impossibly, she jumped up into the air and landed on a tree branch. I tried to jump up and sit beside her and she cackled at my pointless efforts. I suddenly became aware that I was cursing at her.
"You fucking little bitch," rang out loudly from my lungs.
I lunged forward in my bed and gasped. What the hell was that? Most certainly not a nightmare but definitely not the most pleasant dream I have had. I placed my hands over my face and felt a rim of sweat over it.
"Gross." I said aloud standing up and leaving my room to go into the bathroom across the hall. Grabbing a towel along the rack, I wet it down and wiped it all over my hot face. I looked up at the mirror and grimaced at it. I looked like hell. Quickly, I looked away and went back into my room.
I lied down across my bed and tried to get myself back to a sleepy state. It wouldn't work. One glimpse at the clock would tell me my fate; 5:45 a.m.
Lovely, like hell I am going to be able to sleep now. I moved over to the curtains and ripped them open to find the sun just beginning to rise. A sharp pain came over my back and I began to wonder if I had slept on it wrong. I rubbed it vigorously for a few seconds before settling down on the edge of my bed.
"Might as well go downstairs," I said aloud and began making my way over to my closet. Unlike some people, I could not lounge around in my pajamas. Once I was up, they were off. My mom had always found it strange because she was one of those that could go all day with them on.
I tiptoed down the steps and maneuvered myself quietly into the kitchen. It was dead quiet down here and I didn't like that. I looked out the window at the beach and found myself thinking about going out there. It wasn't like they were getting up anytime soon.
I strolled away from the house and began walking along the sandy beach. A giggle behind me made me spun around and glare at the scenery. What the hell? I moved my head a little further to notice two bodies embracing.
"Alejandro?" I blurted out with surprise. The male quickly jumped up and my guess was correct. I tried not to laugh as he tried to shoo the girl away and race over to me with obvious anger on his face.
"Don't say anything!" He yelled but I turned around and burst out into laughter. "I mean it!"
"Go back to your little girlfriend." I teased once again walking in the direction toward the pier. Making out with a girl at six in the morning? No wonder he was always last to get downstairs...
"She's gone." He replied and I realized that he was following after me.
"I am not going to tell anyone Allie."
"I just don't want anyone thinking I have this great girlfriend and getting sad when it ends."
"Has that happened before?"
"Yes." His tone was bitter but it made another chuckle escape my throat.
"What's her name?" I pried innocently but he ignored my question and began walking alongside of me. "I said... what's her name?"
"Nothing you need to know."
"What an odd name." He shoved my shoulder and we both laughed. "She won't think I am some other woman, right?" I asked suddenly serious but he didn't seem to care.
"I'll just explain that you're my cousin and if she doesn't believe me then that's her problem."
"You act like you don't even care."
"I do but..." Alejandro trailed off and stared over at the ocean. I didn't bother asking him to finish his sentence. "So tell me," he changed the subject and was facing me. "Why are you up?"
"I couldn't get to sleep after a dream."
"Ah, yes, happens to me all the time. I hate it when it does."
I decided then and there that I wanted to tell him everything; I needed someone to talk to. "I keep thinking about Becca. I won't deny that I miss her but I like it here so much better."
"Becca is the little American, right?"
"Yes."
"Well," Alejandro pondered for a moment. "You could always just visit her or have her visit you."
"But, I don't think she'd like to see me and you know who is included in that package. Liza. I don't want to see her at all."
"Well, then if they reply tell her how you really feel instead of making it a boring-"
"You read it?!" I asked outraged by his nosiness.
"Yep," he seemed amused by my anger.
"I don't know... if I think of something I'll let you know."
"Oh joy." This time I was the one who shoved his shoulder and he laughed.
"And I am sorry about... you know... interrupting you and-"
"That's okay." He said quickly and I snickered under my breath. We had reached the pier and were now sitting along the edge of it to let our feet fall over the water. "You know what Jackie, I am glad you did come here."
"Ah... well thank you." I thanked sweetly and we both laughed. "Chiquita?" I asked suddenly loud and he gave me a strange expression.
"What?"
"Was that her name?" He rolled his eye at my assumption and shook his head.
"How about Sheba, I thought she looked like a Sheba."
"Very funny." He muttered but I kept on guessing.
In the end I found out that she was not any of the names I had guessed and if she was he probably wouldn't have told me either so that left me in wonderment. We were both sitting on the pier when we heard Lupe calling out loudly for us. I had almost forgotten about the others back at the house.
(Author's Note: I know that right now it really isn't at its best but sometimes chapters like this are necessary. It will get better and is still not over. Tell me your honest opinion.)

In my honest opinion, i really liked the chapter. There were still events going on, not bigs ones, but they still happened and it moves the story along. I'm glad that you're not putting any romance into the story. I tried veering away from it in my story, but I ended up incorporating some romance into it. Its kinda hard not to write it. I really do miss Becca to, her and her witticisms :D Keep it up |
