Scream.

I took one last drag of the cigarette before flicking it off to the side. One more puff escaped my lips as I stared off at the sunsetted horizon. A day at the lake was not something unusual for me. In fact, I did it practically three times a week.

I licked my dry lips as my eyes zeroed in on a hawk flying above. Now, I was no hawk-eater, but it occured to me that I have not eaten for at least a good three hours. Ripping off the ponytail holder from my left arm, I swept my bronze hair back into a messy bun. It was still dense from an earlier swim.

My stomach growled unattractively and I stood up to glance over at the way I came. I was at least six miles away from my apartment which meant it would take a good hour before I reached home. Hitchhiking was an option but I have never been too fond of riding with strangers.

Impulsively, I put my hand into my pocket to pull out my pack of cigarettes and my lighter but as soon as I opened up the pack I remembered that my sweet nicotine was gone.

    Damn.

I looked back over at the lake and plopped back down on the tall grass. A few blades scratched my legs but I paid little attention. It would be dark soon and I didn't like walking around alone at nighttime. Maybe if I could get a fucking date rather than a bloody one night stand I wouldn't be here sitting all by myself.

Darkness soon overcame the painted skies; the only luminance being the stars. It was the night of the new moon, but on a night like this I would've prefered a full one.

There was no eerieness about this night, nothing that would lead me to suspect what would happen next. It was no animal that was lurking behind me.

    It was a monster.

All it took was one breath on my neck to make my spine tickle in all the wrong ways. Even before that cold metal touched the bare skin of my back I knew.

"Do as I say and you won't get hurt." His rough voice hissed in my ear as he shoved my head onto the earth. Dirth dug into my mouth as a cold and hard rock scraped along my cheek; it tore the flesh clean off. Hearing the noise of a zipper I cocked my head up and opened my mouth wide.

    And screamed.

My voice echoed through the night and I could only hope that there was someone out there in the woodlands that would hear me. But I knew my howl wouldn't last, I was of course the weaker of the two in this situation. The gun that had been held against my back, was moved and instead swung against my head.

A small crack and the feeling of a rush of blood made a moan escape my lips. Something warm swam down the back of my neck and I heard a loud shriek.

"Oh god!" My attracter shouted. "Th-this was not supposed to happen. Dear god! I can't... I can't... oh no! Forgive me." His voice had lowered at the end and I could almost hear the tears burning from his eyes.

What wasn't supposed to happen? Me screaming? What the hell did he expect when he was about to rape someone?

My thoughts were the last things I heard before the click. My breathing slowed and the realization hit me, but it was already too late.

Forgive me... forgive me... forgive me...

********************************************************

The darkness was gone, but where was I?

It was so foggy, so foreign, but yet, so familiar.

Wait, was this water? There were translucent ripples that flowed past me in the smog, it sure looked like water, but not just any water; it was the water from the lake. Oh! The lake, yes of course, my day at the lake. Silly me, must've blanked out while swimming.

Now if I could just swim up to the surface...

My body wouldn't respond. Not even a finger twitched. Well, this was strange, too strange, like a dream that I haven't resurfaced from. I began to hypreventilate...

    Or, I should've.

Oh no, no, no. I was drowning, but I don't even remember jumping into the lake. Maybe the lack of oxygen was just fiddling with my brain. Yeah, that sounds right, but goddammit! I don't want to die! So what if I was just asking for it with my addiction, but I should have at least a life until I am older.

"Please, help me!" I shouted in my head, desperately wanting it to be out loud. Even though it would've been gurgled by the water it still would make me feel so much better.

Please just scream Em, scream so loud that maybe a fish will save you.

But why the hell was I drowning? I was an excellent swimmer and was even on the swim team in high school. Was I caught onto something? I tried to look down at my feet but my eyes couldn't move, I didn't even blink and it took me seconds to learn that what was going on was impossible.

I couldn't feel the sting. The water didn't exactly burn my eyes but it didn't make them feel the greatest and here I was drifting in the lake with my eyes wide open. But it wasn't just that.

I couldn't hear it. My pulse just seemed to not be there.

If I am dead then I should be in heaven... or hell, or at least in darkness. I should be, well dead. But here I am, in that stupid lake because I drowned. I didn't drown though, did I?

No, no, I didn't drown... I was thrown into the lake?

No. That doesn't sound right. Who in the world would want to throw someone in a lake and kill them? Other than a murderer of course, but I wasn't murderered, I was all alone at the lake like practically every other day. No one was there.

But there was something, yes, I remember there was a noise behind me... rustling of the grass? Yes, that was it. I thought it was a bunny or a fox, but it wasn't, it was... a man?

It was a man. I could remember his stale breath at the back of my neck and his hand gripping my shoulder... but there was something else... something that made me scared.

The zipper? Yes, I didn't like that but no... that wasn't it... but it was metal...

Then I froze, or well my conscience froze. The gun. It was the gun that was pressed against my back flesh, but it did something that hurt me. It concked me over the head! I remember the pain the feeling of the blood on my neck. It was so warm but it hurt so bad.

That was it; he hit my head and threw me in the lake. There was something between that though, something I was forgetting.

    Forgive me...

Forgive him for what? I know he drowned me while I was unconscious but... the click. The click of the gun. He shot me, but where?

I tried to once again maneuver my eyes around but they wouldn't even move. Oh yeah, I am dead, so then why can't I just go to sleep? My conscience tensed as I tried to shove my eyes shut. Like before, they didn't even move.

I thought death would be so much more peaceful. Doesn't R.I.P mean rest in peace?

I stared out at the water because it was the only thing I could do. It seemed as though I would have to just sit here and wait for the end. Unless this was the end; the end that many people have killed themselves for hoping it would be better.

I would pick life over this anyday.

Day. Has it been days? Or has it been hours, months, or even years?

It was the same. The same as every moment. All I could do was just float and stare, but there were few differences. For one, the current moved me so that my back was bursting through the surface while I was facing the water.

Fish would go by me without so much of a glance and I would even find myself sometimes wishing that they could hear me, that they could save me.

Why hasn't someone found me yet? Why can't someone just decide to go to the lake only to find a fucking dead body floating in it? Why must I keep staring at the world instead of closing my eyes and shutting it all away? But sometimes I was afraid to shut my eyes.

What if I shut my eyes and it would be just like now, but only darker? That would be worse.

There was no sound, no nothing in this strange state I was in. I couldn't even feel the echoes of the water against my skin. Being dead is not fun, not fun at all.

The saying "death is only the beginning" kept coursing through my head because now I finally understood what it meant.

They found me. I could not hear them but I could see them. One poked me with a stick and I desperately wanted to throttle the kid. "Do not touch me," I wanted to shout but everyone was too busy opening their mouths wide and dialing their phones.

They were screaming and that made me instantly jealous. I wanted to scream, I wanted to be alive and free like them.

    I wanted a life.

There was soon blackness that surronded me, but it was not because my eyes were finally closed, but because I was in something. A body bag. They put me in a fucking body bag. I prefered the water, but at least now I began to feel a surge of hope.

Well, my conscience felt a surge of hope. My body felt nothing. My heart hasn't beaten for ages and it created this hollow feeling in my mind that drained all the hope from me. But now it was almost stitching itself up. Almost.

I wasn't sure what they did to me after that. I could feel no bumps nor hear any noise that went on outside of the bag. But one time the zipper came undone and my eyes looked at the bright lights above. That should've hurt, that should've made me close my eyes in anguish, but it didn't.

There was a man. Wearing gloves and clothing like a doctor's. He had a white gotee and eyebrows, but the thing that was most interesting about him was his hair. It was white and wild and stuck up everywhere. This old man looked like a madman.

Suddenly, his eyes locked on mine and he made an almost repulsed expression. His gloved fingers then began slowly moving down to my eyes and only one word roamed my head.

    No.

It started out quiet but each time it got loader until it was a yell inside my mind.

    No.

    No.

    NO!

I was then lost into a world of darkness. Now there was truly nothing.

(Author's Note: This was my dream I had last night when I was in Madison. Of course, I added and took out a few details but other than that it was my dream. Like, how the person was in water, in my dream I was in a box but I didn't feel like writing that because I am claustrophobic and it makes me uncomfortable to even think about that -- I don't know how I slept throught it, but I did. Besides the water makes much more sense because of the lake.)
