-Chapter One-
"We need to talk about this." Isis said to the statuesque brunette who just nodded. Her voice had been so calm but as she turned to face me I could see the true anger burning metallic in her eyes. She gripped my arm and pulled me into a nearby room. "Are you mad?"
"I thought that we agreed about this? We both knew a house of this one's age would probably have a few skeletons in its closet."
"But not actual skeletons!" Isis persisted with a sharp glance at the other room where the realtor was most likely listening.
"If it happened over a hundred years ago then we have absolutely nothing to worry about. And don't you dare mention the word ghosts." I warned.
Ghosts, voodoo, superstitious junk was the one thing we could not agree on. I believed in science and facts, whereas, she believes in the exact opposite. Debates are very common on this subject, but I now know better than to argue with her. Not only is Isis very persuasive but she is a much better arguer than I could ever hope to be.
"Fine I won't mention the word ghosts... so how about apparitions; they should be crawling all over this place!"
I sighed but said nothing. I was not in the mood to debate with her; especially not here. So instead of retorting her comment I changed the subject.
"Besides, when I was younger I always wanted to live in an old mansion like this. What if there are secret passageways and such? I think he would like it." I said glancing down at the lump on her stomach.
"First of all, Neil, we don't know if it is a boy or-"
"But I don't want to call the baby an it." I interrupted and she shot me a hard look.
"Or a girl, and secondly I don't think this is a good environment for a child." She finalized but I only rolled my eyes. "We both have to agree on where we are going to live and I don't want it to be here!"
"Look if you want, after we purchase it we can get a medium to come check it out." I disliked the idea but if it meant getting this house I would do it.
I wasn't sure what it was about this place that made me so determined to get it. Maybe it was my childhood or maybe it was just the house itself. It was extremely beautiful and elegant but the best part was that I could afford it.
I don't think that Isis ever liked that I came from a wealthy family or that I have a good paying job. Of course, I didn't rub my riches in anyone's face but there is just something she dislikes whenever I give her an expensive gift. She came from a nice middle class family, not that I hold it against her, truthfully I could care less about the money in my pocket.
I could buy her anything except clothing. She hated it when I did that more than anything. It wasn't that the clothes were ugly she just preferred a different style. She was more of an artsy person who liked to paint and draw anything and everything. Isis was also musical. She could play the piano, guitar, drums and the cello.
Those were just some of the reasons to why I fell in love with her, but sometimes I found myself wondering whatever could've attracted her to me.
I was average looking. Dark brown hair and dull brown eyes; nothing special at all. She was on the other hand beautiful. Cropped and spiked charcoal hair, ivory skin, and a mysterious shade of silvery ice eyes; beautiful was one word that could describe her but there was so much more.
I was a lawyer and she was an artist, I guess the whole "opposite attracts" thing was real after all. The only thing we have in common is our love for music.
"Well," Isis said deep in thought, "I guess that would be okay."
"Then it is settled, any last words before I pull the plug?" I asked with a triumphant smile.
"Yeah, wipe that stupid grin off your face." Her arms were across her chest while her head was cocking to the side and staring at me with a venomous expression.
"Of course, of course," it was hard to suppress my smile but I managed as we walked back into the other room. The realtor was in the same spot as before.
"So have you made your decision yet?" She asked with a big and fake smile plastered on her face.
"Yes we have, and we have decided to-"
A crash echoed through the halls of the old manor and the three of us looked around in surprise. The realtor had a nervous expression as she glanced about.
"I am sure it was nothing." But I was already walking around the rooms that we had toured earlier. It had come from the left... so it should be around here somewhere...
A pile of shattered glass lied at the foot of a broken window. A breeze now rustled lightly throughout the dark and cold room and I stomped over to the opening to look for the culprit.
"Rotten kids," I said aloud before hearing two sets of footsteps.
"Oh my," Isis said from behind me and I once again heard the realtor trying to say reassuring things.
"I am sure it was just a prank..."
"Then where's the ball or whatever broke it?" I fumed peering over the surface of the damage for the object.
"It probably rolled off or something, don't worry I am sure it will come up."
"Or maybe it wasn't an object that broke it." Isis murmured and I looked back at her menacingly. She didn't wince or flinch all Isis did was give me a calm and vacant expression.
"This house is not haunted. Our house is not haunted."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Zeus stalked me around every corner of the bare house. Most of the time I get annoyed of my Chesapeake Bay companion but this time I practically ignored him. We entered the garage only to find Isis opposite of me and trying to pick up the very last box. I sighed and walked (well, Zeus and I both walked) over to her.
"You really shouldn't be lifting heavy objects." I said, repeating what the doctor had told her last month. She mumbled something incoherent before arching upright and looking around at the garage.
"Well say goodbye to our first house."
"And say hello to our second."
"Oh come on, there were plenty of good memories in this one... and a lot of creepy ones in that one." Her voice had lowered an octave at the end and I patted her shoulder.
"It won't be that bad. Besides, we already hired the medium to check it out sometime."
"I still don't like it."
"Isis, everything is going to be fine. I promise you it will."
"Yes, well I promise you it won't."
(Author's Note: Well, the layout is looking much better, took me forever to find a substitute for the paragraphs last time. There was probably a simpler way but I have a habit of making everything more complicated. There's always room for improvement so tell me your honest opinion.)
(Oh, and I know I didn't exactly go into detail about the house's past. The characters were informed but I want to keep that a mystery to you all for just a bit longer. I know this story seems like it is going to be like all the other haunted house stories, but it's not. I could explain why right at this exact moment but that would take away the fun.)
I like it a lot, and no it isn't like other haunted house stories...It's got a different feel to it. Well actually I get a "House On Haunted Hill" feel because the man was a business man and the wife was a trophy wife. |
