-Chapter 4-

The bus ride back home was also nothing interesting as well. Isabelle sat by me and we had small conversations but nothing significant enough for me to remember. I did however ask her if she would go out with Darien and she said that she would think about it.

The snow was falling harder than it had been earlier today which made a small smile spread across my face; I liked the snow.

Entering my house was like entering a cemetery; quiet and somewhat morbid. But I was used to it so it didn’t bother me as much as it probably should have. My mother doesn’t work because she doesn’t need to (it’s my father’s job) so like always she was sipping tea in the kitchen.

“How was school?” She asked in a bored and disinterested tone.

“Okay.”

“That’s nice.” I could tell that she hadn’t heard a word that I had said but I didn’t care either.

She was sitting there so quietly and poised that I began to wonder if she had always been so mellow or was it when father had stopped paying attention to her. I bet she was young and vibrant and beautiful. I had her eyes and sometimes when I looked at her reflective sapphire eyes I found myself thinking about what she had ever saw in dad.

He may have been attractive in his day but now he is just some grumpy man with gray streaked hair. Of course he was successful but he was also a person that I’d rather stay away from. Maybe he too was young and vivacious… maybe.

My mother felt my stare and our eyes mirrored.

“Are you alright, Jason?” Her tone had turned serious and I could tell that her maternal instincts were kicking in.

“I-I am fine.” I replied somewhat shocked with the fact that she was actually worried about me.

“Well… that’s good.” She finalized flashing me a wistful look before going back to her magazine.

I shook my hair to get out the snow—even though most of the flakes would have melted by now—and set my backpack on the ground. I was happy to take off my heavy coat and to show how relieved I was I rolled up my sleeves.

“Your father will be home early tonight so we will be able to eat dinner together.” My mother called after me as I went up the stairs. I heard suppressed excitement in her voice and I understood why. My father never eats dinner with us, not even on weekends; this would be the first in such a long time.

“Oh,” was all I could think of to say. I didn’t really want to see my father but I didn’t want to irritate my mother with attitude.

Hours past before I heard the garage door swing open and soon to follow the smell of food. As if on cue my name rang out from my mother’s throat and I sulked down the steps. My father was at spot on the far end of the table and my mother opposite from him. Of course I had to sit in the middle.

Dinner started out like it usually did; quiet. But unlike all the other times there was an awkward feeling that radiated off of every one of us and I knew it was because that my father was able to be here.

“So how’s school going?” My father said after he cleared his throat.

“Fine.” I muttered curtly.

“You get those grades up?”

“I am assuming you mean the A- I had in Physics.” My voice whipped out harshly and out of the corner of my eye I saw my mother wince.

“Yes, well did you get it up?”

“No. Now it is an F.” I sneered and that set him off.

“WHAT?!” He roared and I chuckled darkly.

“It was just a joke.”

“You do not joke about such things.”

“Like you would know what a good joke would be, Mr. Serious.” I mocked with a smirk. A thud pounded the room and it took me less than a second to figure out what it was.

Blood dripped from my mouth and I felt a harsh tingly sensation on my face. He hit me! I was tempted to punch him back but I knew what that would escalate to…

“Charles!” My mother gasped; she too was surprised by my father’s actions.

“No respect.” He murmured in return before turning back to his food and acting as if nothing had happened.

But that set me off and I let the anger consume me. Stabbing a knife into the table I flared my nostrils and glared wrathfully at him.

“There you go again! I bet you don’t even give a damn about us; yes, us!” I emphasized and his cold eyes flickered to my mother. “She sits there alone everyday while you probably skip out on us with your mistresses; yep, I bet that is what you do. Sometimes I hear her crying because of you!”

Everyone was wordless; even him. I decided that I wasn’t hungry anymore so I shoved my chair in and walked brusquely up the stairs. I could not stand to see either of their faces anymore.

Even though it was hardly even seven o’clock the winter skies were darkened by nightfall and I only thought of one thing to do: go on the rooftop. I climbed out of my window and crawled up the roof until I was seated in my usual spot.

“Hello.” I heard Layla’s voice say behind me and I gave her a little wave.

“Hey.”

“You want to talk about it?” She was referring to face that was now bruised.

“Later.”

I loved this place. We could forget about the earlier happenings of the day as if we were in our own little world. Up here we could be whoever and do whatever we wanted to do.

(Author’s Note:  Not much to say for this chapter except that it is still the beginning so I am taking it a bit slow. Things shall heat up soon so don’t worry this is still a romance. This one wasn’t as long but I don’t think that it needed to be extremely long.)
