The Blank Canvas (11)
|
I nodded to her to show that I was ready to begin and this time she didn’t pose like she had last time. Instead, she merely just stood there and gazed over at me, something that I was just fine with. Her green eyes pierced through my soul as I placed the pencil upon the canvas.
“You look so serious when you draw.” Aubrey mused and I couldn’t help but smile; only it was a small smile that lasted a few seconds.
I started just how I had last time; on the outline of her face. The only thing that was different was that there were birds chirping outside the window but that didn’t bother me.
And then I wanted to tell her. I wanted to tell her everything that had happened between the moment I had met her and up to today. But I knew that would just make it harder for her so I kept my mouth shut and went back to sketching her.
I looked up from the canvas so that I could envision her in my mind once more for the drawing but she had moved. Aubrey was now directly in front of me with wild eyes.
“Do you have anything?” She asked in a crazed voice.
“I don’t understand…”
“Rum! Wine! Beer! Liquor! Whisky! Anything!”
“I do not think that you should be drinking.” I replied sternly but that only made her shake her head in impatience.
“I will not be able to do this picture without something.” I could see her body trembling from her nerves. “Olivier, I gave you a ticket to Paris and you clearly stated that you owe me more than I owed you since that first portrait was for you anyway.”
“Oh, alright,” I said grudgingly as I went over to the bottom of my nightstand and pulled out some rum. I knew it was the wrong decision, but yet, I just couldn’t say no to her.
Aubrey grabbed the bottle greedily and chugged down one third of it in less than ten seconds. She then slammed it down on the floor and went back by the window with a more relaxed expression.
“Sorry about that, carry on.”
“Well, alright.” I said going back to the drawing.
It took two hours just to finish the portrait. I wasn’t sure if it was more than it had been the first time or if it had been shorter, and frankly I didn’t care.
There was something about this one though that the other one lacked; life. The natural stance she had shown in this one really added to the effect of it being more than a picture. It made it look more like-life.
“May I see?” Aubrey slurred and I realized that she had just swallowed another load of rum.
“Sure.” I handed the portrait over to her and she smiled.
“You always make me look… beautiful. How do you do that?”
“Well, it’s not that hard since you are already beautiful, but I think that the black and white contrast with the shades of grays helps brings out the details that colors miss.”
“That’s interesting.” She said while flinging her arms up in the air and staring up at my old and cracked ceiling.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course I am okay! Thanks for the drink, I really needed it.”
I stared at her strangely for the next few minutes and she locked eyes with me for just a brief part of those minutes.
“Are you able to do another favor for me?” Aubrey asked quietly and I almost thought she was sober.
“Depends on the favor…” I respond with narrow eyes.
“May you kiss me again, like you did yesterday?”
Her question startled me like the one she had asked before but this one seemed almost unanswerable. I knew it would just make everything harder for the both of us, but I really did want to do it. I tried to decipher her expression to see if she was just a drunk asking or if she was really Aubrey.
Well, she sure as hell looked like Aubrey, but there was a certain shyness that she usually had so I knew it had to be her intoxicated mind lashing out.
“No.”
“But why?” She whimpered and I knew that my hypothesis had been correct.
“You are drunk and this isn’t right, come on, I am taking you home.” I reached out to her but she pulled back and gave me an expression that almost looked like a glare.
“I don’t want to go home.”
“Well your Laurence may not be there, but it’s better than here, especially since you are… drunk.” I once again reached over to her but as she also had before she pulled away. “Aubrey.” I warned.
“But I want to stay here… with you…” Aubrey pleaded and this time I didn’t even care that she was going to fight me. I lifted her up and began carrying her down to the door that led to the outside world.
I had suspected a small fight to break out between us but she had surprised me by voluntarily letting me cradle her in my arms.
“Olivier, I don’t want you to leave me.” She murmured once we were out the door and onto the streets that had many curious onlookers.
“Don’t worry, I won’t.” I replied softly and I almost felt a little bit of pity for her. And then she was out, like she had before she fell asleep in my arms.
I decided not to take the alleys even though they would be shorter, but I didn’t want any harm to come her way from the savage homeless people that have killed a person over a small amount of money.
The hardest part was going up Third Street—it was all uphill—ugh. But I just kept reminding myself that every step brought me closer to the top and that actually seemed to work. I occasionally looked down at her as her wasted body was entangled on top of mine. As drunk as she was, she was still a nice sight for sore eyes.
I remembered the way to her house because even though it had been weeks since I was there last, I could never forget where she had lived because I usually found myself thinking about just going there to see her.
The house was as large as I had remembered only this time there was certain elegances about it in the daytime that it had not had in the nighttime. Like how the large oak tree’s leaves glistened like crystals in the high sun, and how the grass seemed so much greener.
I knocked on the heavy knocker that had an intricate design across it. Everything else seemed so quiet compared to the pounding noise that erupted so abruptly in the air. I couldn’t even hear if there were footsteps approaching the door.
A small and dainty young woman opened the door. I knew that she was a maid from her apron and bonnet that was over her thick black hair. Her skin was olive-toned and she had these light eyes that were framed with dark brows. She was definitely Italian.
“Oh my! Bring her upstairs.”
“I was just going to bring her here…”
“Well I cannot very well carry her.” The maid said simply and with a sigh I carried Aubrey into the extravagant home and gave the maid a troubled look. “Upstairs in the left wing; it is the third door.” She informed me and I nodded but couldn’t help but wonder why the maid was just letting me having free reign of the house.
It took me longer than I thought to just find the third the door and once I did I stared in awe at the luxuries in Aubrey’s room. If she could stay here, why in the world would she keep wanting to visit me in my shabby home?
I placed her onto the large bed and stared at her for the longest time. Her blond hair twisted across the pillow and her lips almost looked as if they were smiling. But an abrupt voice behind me interrupted my thoughts.
“Who are you?”
(Author's Note: I decided to post two chapters in one day just because I didn’t fancy the tenth chapter very much. This one may not be as long as the others but at least you got two in one day…)
