The Blank Cavas (10)
|
Dawn licked across the skies but Aubrey still purred beside me. Oh how I wanted her to be mine, but alas I knew she couldn’t leave the man she was betrothed to. I kept on envisioning her and me wandering the streets in Paris; with her by my side I could probably draw anything.
I knew that this must be terribly hard for her and I really do want to make it easier and just let her go, but I can’t. And I know that people usually don’t fall in love within weeks of meeting a person or in this case a stranger, but I really do feel something.
The pain in chest still hadn’t gone away and now I know that I have a bleeding and bloody heart like the rest of the world. Sometimes I wonder if this is a dream and it will just vanish into thin air like the rest of my nighttime merriments, but then I look down at her and know that this is truly reality.
My palm began to tingle and I glanced down only to find Aubrey tracing the lines on my hand. She was finally up and I readied for the tears that could burst out at any moment.
“Did you have a nice sleep?” I asked kindly but there was a small cautious edge to my voice.
“Actually, it was quite lovely.”
“So when do you have to go back to Laurence?” I blurted out and immediately regretted saying it for her head had lowered and her eyes had begun to well up. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to… gee, Aubrey, I don’t really know what to say other than sorry.”
“No, no it’s alright.” She assured with the flick of the wrist as her tears vanished back behind her eyelids. “Did you sleep at all?”
I shook my head, “nope.”
The sudden awkwardness of being wrapped in my arms hit her and she wriggled restlessly to get out. I of course let her go but regretted doing so for she had gotten up and begun walking away. Quickly going beside her, I too began to walk.
“I have caused a real mess of things,” said Aubrey through a sigh.
“Yes, yes you have.” I said and she looked over at me to see if I was joking, but since no smile was across my face she knew I was serious.
“I don’t want to hurt either one of you, but it seems that I will have to.”
“Look, Aubrey, I don’t know what to tell you. I will not be angry with you but I cannot help you in this decision. It is up to you, not me.” My voice had a cold and sharp edge to it that I hadn’t realized was there until the words escaped my throat.
“I know, Olivier, I know.”
Once again silence had overcome the moment as we walked; neither of us sure of if we should be break it or how we should do so.
“I want to go to your house.” She demanded and the authority in her voice made me raise my eyebrows in surprise.
“Why?”
“I don’t know I just feel so at ease in your home.”
“Well, okay…” I stated slowly as we then began to walk in the direction of the lower part of Third Street. “What about Laurence?”
“He’s in Paris for a few days.”
“So that’s why you invited me to the ball because your precious Laurence couldn’t come?” I sneered with anger.
She stopped and turned over in my direction with a sad and weak expression. “No.”
“Sorry, I guess I just didn’t…”
“That’s alright, I don’t care, and you have every right to be angry with me.”
We reached Third Street and began slowly walking downhill from it. The streets were alive down there in the poverty section. I looked past the street to see a red haired boy with a ruddy face kicking some stones.
Adrien.
“Aubrey, could you excuse me for a minute? If you would like you could also just make your way over to my home on your own. You see, I need to speak to a friend.” I explained and she nodded before going in a divergent direction than I.
Adrien hadn’t noticed me for he had had his back facing me but he sure did recognize me once I tapped his shoulder. With a smirk he eyed my suit once more.
“You’re still wearing it?”
“It doesn’t matter… look, Adrien, I am sorry for the other day.” I apologized but he seemed unfazed.
“So where’s your sweetheart?”
“Aubrey is somewhere else.”
“Did she dump you?”
“No she didn’t dump me.” At least I don’t think she did…
“Whatever, it is just a matter of time.”
“I came here to apologize, but apparently that was the wrong thing to do.” I swiveled on my heel and began to walk in the direction of my home where Aubrey probably was.
Adrien said nothing and I heard his footsteps stalk off somewhere else. Well, that was a waste of time. I have an idea of why he is angry with me, but those are just guesses and probably not the correct answers.
My pocket began to feel rather heavy as I trotted. I always brought the ticket to Paris with me so that if anyone ever raided my home they wouldn’t find it. Oh, how I desperately wanted to go to Paris but many things here in Reims have stopped me.
Aubrey, for starts, and then there was Adrien, but there was something else; something that I cannot explain. And it irritated me terribly because I could not even figure it out. I need to go to Paris. I dream about it all the time and I know that I will be able to possibly make it to the top.
The rundown building that I live in was just a block down. I would’ve been home earlier if I had taken the alleys, but for some reason I just wanted to take it slow.
Repetition went into play as I once again opened the rickety door and walked into the dark and cold hallway. Cobwebs were fastened delicately along the corners and I could even hear mice scurrying about.
The old and darkened wood along the steeps creaked with every one of my movements. Even the slightest curve of my foot would cause its noises to explode throughout the place. And then I reached the door.
There she stood once again by the window. Her blond locks whirling around her head like a yellow flame as the wind drove heavily into my room. She hadn’t noticed me at first but once the floorboards began to squeak she knew she wasn’t alone.
“Hello, Olivier.” Aubrey purred but she was still facing the window. “Did you have fun with your friend?”
I sighed at the remembrance of Adrien, “nope.”
“Are you able to do one thing for me?” She asked suddenly in front of me.
I took a small step back but nodded. “Sure, what is it?”
“May you draw me one last time?” Her question caught me by surprise but I nodded once more. “Good.” She breathed as her whole body relaxed.
I went around the room in search of a blank canvas and my utensils. This time they weren’t as hard to find even though my room was still overcrowded in junk. I dusted off the ivory sheet over the canvas so that it was ready to be drawn upon and once again sharpened one of my charcoal pencils.
I looked up at Aubrey during the midst of things and saw little sadness in her green eyes. The agony had once been embedded in them, but all that was in her irises today was tranquility. I didn’t quite understand the mood and the eerie thing about it was that it sent an ominous chill up my spine.
(Author's Note: Well my last chapter got 18 rates so I am now fairly happy, but I’d still like it to be in the twenties… however, this was not my favorite chapter to write, but it does lead to better ones and a surprising ending—yes this ending is not going to be predictable; well for some people it might be but not for the majority.
(Oh well, at least I didn’t fall below 10, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want you to rate because I truly do. So rate—please)
(All I will say about upcoming stories is that the one I post when this one is finished will be called “Violet Hill”. Yes, it is based on the song Violet Hill (by Coldplay) so if you want to preview it all you have to do is listen to the lyrics… it’ll give you a few clues to what it will be about.)
