- The day of the Ellison’s Masquerade Ball -

“You seriously spent all of your money, just to buy a stupid suit?!” Adrien sneered sarcastically. “How are you ever going to last in Paris?”

“I am not going to Paris; I mean I will but not right now.”

“Whatever but I still think it was a waste.” Adrien gestured at my new suit that I had just bought.

It was a nice suit and it really did make me look somewhat sophisticated. The cuffs brushed up against my wrists as I fixed the collar on my white undershirt. The design was sleek and elegant and definitely not me, but I wasn’t doing this for me, I was doing this for Aubrey.

I could hear Adrien’s rude snorts behind me as I modeled myself in a cracked mirror. I glared at him blackly through the glass but that didn’t stop him, in fact it made him even more obnoxious.

“Why are you so angry about this? I am going to a ball that is in the high-class neighborhood! You expect me to just show up in knickers and a stained shirt?”

“It’d be better than this!”

“What is your problem? Ever since I told you I was invited to a ball and that I now have a one-way ticket to Paris you have been acting strange.”

Adrien grew quiet and I could see him fighting for the right words. His face was all jumbled up in thought as his forehead creased; I could almost see a vein popping out.

“Look Adrien, if it is because you don’t want me to go…”

“You wouldn’t understand!” He shouted before running out of my home and onto the streets.

I would’ve run after him and I should’ve but maybe the space would be good for him. Maybe it would help clear his thoughts. Of course I felt terrible about the whole situation but I know that deep down he understands he just doesn’t want to accept it.

Adrien has been my best mate since I can remember. Even though at times he tends to be difficult and annoying, he always brings me a certain comfort that no one else is able to give to me. It is a homely type comfort that I left behind once I left the rural country side and came to Reims.

I peered back over to the candlelit mirror and found myself sighing exasperatedly. The effect of the nice suit left me a little uncomfortable and awkward but I pulled together as I looked over at the blackened skies.

Midnight was nearing.

Straightening up my shoes and tie, I walked casually down the spiraled steps. My breathing was coming out short and I knew that it was because I was nervous; nervous for not only the fact that I would be attending an elite ball, but because in moments I would be within touching range of Aubrey.

I opened the old rickety door to find a goddess just walking up the stoned steps.

Aubrey was wearing an empire-waist long and laced white dress. Ivory gloves hugged her delicate hands while tapping noises exploded from her heels. Her golden locks were toppled on top of her head in a loose bun; its looseness had made some curls dangle down on her cheekbones. Those familiar and friendly green eyes dazzled me as a smile crept across her soft and pink lips. I could even see a subtle blush painting her cheeks.

I too couldn’t help but smile.

“You look lovely.” I complimented with sincerity and her blush grew a shade darker.

“You look nice yourself; don’t tell me that you went through a lot of trouble to get that suit.”

“Don’t worry, I had enough.”

“Good because I wouldn’t want to be the reason you turn poor.”

“Uh… darling…” I raised my hands up in the air and gestured to my rundown home. “I don’t think you need to worry about yourself being the reason to why I am poor.”

She smiled sheepishly and I waltzed over to her and hooked my arm through hers. I didn’t have to even say anything for her to gladly accompany me as we walked toward the direction of the upper class vicinity.

I knew which home it would be (if that’s what you call a home—it was huge!) not from the address, but from the numerous cars parked along the cobblestone road.

Upper class men with furs and large hats entered the large white doors that obviously led to the ball. Aubrey told me to get out my invitation and I obediently did so.

The man standing by the stone pillars and the door grunted out something and I realized that his accent had a twang of Italian. He was very barbaric looking and the dark curls of his hair were slicked back which made him look somewhat Italian.

“Invitations?” He asked both Aubrey and I.

We gave them to his ruddy hands and pranced on into the belle of the ball. People of all different sorts were gathered in clusters conversing, eating, dancing or anything else to do at a party. Most were dancing though.

“Aubrey, darling!” A female voice behind us purred and I turned around to see a snobby looking brunette eying me up.

She had watery blue eyes with small bags beneath them which made me believe that she must not sleep very well. Her frizzy hair was teased into a tight bun atop her head and I could see the small strands frizzing up from the humidity of the night. An emerald dress hugged her small body tightly as she parted her lips at me.

“Stella this is a family friend. His name is Olivier.”

“Friend? That’s good because we wouldn’t—”

“Would you like to dance?” Aubrey butted in and I gave her a narrowed glance.

We wouldn’t want what, Stella?” I persisted but Stella had already left.

“So would you?”

I didn’t know why she wanted to changed the subject so badly, but it definitely got my interest. I couldn’t help but wonder what it was that she was hiding from me.

I wound my arms around her waist as hers rested upon my shoulder. Once again there was that certain unfathomable expression that maddened me enough to make me burn with frustration. It seemed that now all I thought about was her and in a way it sickened me.

It was amazing that we were so close but yet so far as our minds wandered elsewhere.

Aubrey stopped the dance and began pulling me out towards a moonlit balcony. Once again, I did not question, I only followed. When we were finally atop the veranda Aubrey linked her hand through mine and stared at me.

“Olivier, I don’t know what it is but every minute, every second, I always see you in my mind. You are like a ghost; you haunt me. At first it was little things but now it is all the time. I don’t know what has happened but it is sure something different.”

“That is exactly how I feel.” I whispered carefully making sure not to mention the word I have had on my mind for the longest time.

The air grew very silent until suddenly her lips were on mine. I could taste the sickly sweetness of her breath as my blood boiled beneath the surface. Sometimes I had thought about kissing her, but it turned out to be nothing next to the real thing.

As quickly as the moment happened, it vanished because we were no longer alone.

A woman with heavy wrinkles and white hair limped out of the party room and smiled at Aubrey, who also smiled back.

“Hello Cherice.” Aubrey greeted warmly.

“Ahh… Aubrey…” The woman’s dark eyes trailed down to Aubrey’s hand as an odd expression came across her face. “Where is you ring, pet?”

(Author's Note: Apparently many of us have OCD -obsessive Cullen disorder-...)

(But anyways I would like to explain one thing:

Do not judge Aubrey, her situation will be explained within the next chapter so do not post hateful comments directed at her.
