The Blank Canvas (6)
|
I woke up the next morning with a loud groan, the portrait still clutched in my hand. My senses were distorted because I was still entranced in my slumber. Grogginess got to me and my consciousness shocked back to reality.
My bare chest was pounding from the sudden awareness and my eyes were big and wild. The sun seemed higher in the sky than usual and I now realized that I had overslept.
Rather than rushing to start the day, I decided to just take it slow. I had nothing to do and there was no point in hurrying about.
I felt oddly at ease but still confusion coursed through my mind as it had the night before. That day left an exhilarated feeling in my gut that I just couldn’t get out. The exhilaration knotted with a certain tightness that left my body feeling all tingly. I just couldn’t help but smile.
I now felt as if I did want to rush around because I just couldn’t wait to enter a new day, a day that I was actually unsure about; it would be a day full of surprises instead of the sameness.
I walked over to the window and peered down, only to find Adrien playing with a group of boys. They seemed to be trying to get attention from a group of neighboring girls, and that made my smile grow. I shook my head and picked up a somewhat clean shirt off the ground.
I also grabbed my art supplies and a blank canvas so that I could sketch something that I could not sketch before. Ready for a new day, I slowly made my way over to the staircase that creaked violently with each step I took. I felt as if I was on top of the world.
I walked out of the front door and instead of wishing that Adrien hadn’t noticed me, I kind of was glad that he did. He skipped hastily over to me, with a small glance toward the ladies that were giggling. I was in the midst of a hormone pit—lovely.
“So which one do you like?” I asked him once he was beside me.
“Isabelle; she’s the one with the long curly brown hair.” Adrien said and a red rush of blood painted his face.
“Well then, go talk to her.” I shoved his shoulder slightly and he gave me a harsh glare.
“I can’t just waltz over there and expect that she also will want to talk to me.”
“Yes you can.”
“No I can’t.”
“Fine.” I rolled my eyes and changed the subject. “So where were you yesterday?”
“Visiting my grandparents on their farm, what did you do?”
“I found her!” I exclaimed and a few people glimpsed over in my direction with arched eyebrows.
“No way?! Show me!”
I nodded and led him back to my room so that I could show the portrait. His eyebrows wagged and a silly smile spread across his face.
“If only I was a few years older…” He said while giving a small glance out the window at the group of girls.
I said nothing as I pried the portrait from his hands and put it lightly on top of a crooked table to my left. I could tell he wanted the juicy details, but I didn’t feel like telling him.
“Come on; tell me what her name is at least.” Adrien plead with his big brown eyes squinted into a pouted look.
“Aubrey.”
I told him small things about what had happened, but none of the very complex things. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to tell him, I just don’t think I could put it into words. And he watched with interest, but I could tell that he wanted to go back outside and join his friends.
We left my apartment together and he went back to his post; one that was close, yet still far, from the group of girls. I flashed him a hard look and with an eye roll Adrien shyly went over to the curly haired brunette.
Isabelle had a nice heart-shaped ivory face. Her skin looked as smooth as silk under the high sun, and her violet dress swished lightly in the wind. Out of the group of girls, she was obviously the loveliest.
I saw Adrien talking to her with little kicks to the ground, both of them smiling. There was an on looking girl with white-gold hair and green cat eyes that was glaring at the two of them with envy. Her hair was pulled back into a bun, but no matter how hard the pins may have been stuck to her head, a wildness about it made it look as if the pins would just pop off.
I looked away from the awakening drama with an eye roll; Ahh the teenage years.
I began walking off into another direction while scanning the surroundings for anything interesting to sketch. Nothing much caught my eye, but that didn’t take away from the beauty of the day. Then something made my head lock in place.
A woman with golden curls was a few paces ahead of me.
Could it be?
Why is she here?
Is she looking for me?
My heartbeat jumped up to an unhealthy rate as I lunged forward to tap the shoulder of the blond person ahead of me. The woman turned around with a confused expression and I realized instantaneously that it was not Aubrey.
Her face was not as rounded; it was much too sharp and angular. Her eyes were iced and her skin was an extreme shade of white. The silhouette of her petite body was too narrow and no strong curves framed it.
This was definitely not Aubrey.
“Do you need something?” The stranger’s voice was cold and unwelcoming.
“Sorry, I thought you were someone else,” and with that she slid on her heel and went back to her normal strut.
I never really could understand what it was about Aubrey that had driven me wild, and I don’t really know why I cannot stop thinking about her. She was even in my dream! Why must I obsess over someone that I had just met?
A chilling thought overcame me but I shoved it aside. Love was such a big word that meant so many things. It just couldn’t be the emotion I was feeling! The word love was what a husband said to a wife or a mother to their child… it is just such an improper word for this situation.
Besides you cannot love a complete stranger.
Of course she is kind, smart and probably the best woman I will ever meet, but she is just my inspiration. Isn’t she?
I decided to just clear my mind so I began to draw the first thing I saw; which just happened to be a small and wooden fence. It was a dark but dull shade of russet that looked very worn and torn. Cracks in the wood made me believe that it has been through a lot.
I began with the intricate wooden frame that had few chips in it. That part didn’t take that long, but many onlookers stared wide-eyed at my drawing; I didn’t think it was that great but I knew it was fairly good.
When I was finished the actual bench itself looked somehow newer. Just thinking about the strange oddity that had just happened made me shutter with disbelief.
A strange feeling came over me as I left the bench and moved onward. It was almost a sad feeling. I wasn’t sure of the cause of it but Aubrey’s name kept pounding through my mind.
Why would I be sad that I could draw other things?
Wasn’t I supposed to be happy?
I did only draw her so that I could draw so much more.
For some reason I just cannot explain the confusing feelings that overwhelmed me. Not only could I not comprehend them, but I could not put them into words.
This was not supposed to be like this. I was supposed to be happy, not sad. Why must this Aubrey keep disturbing my mind? Maybe it would help if I saw her again… no that would not help anything; it would probably just make everything worse.
I felt so confused that I could probably just cry from all the frustration, but tears never helped anything, they always just make it wetter and much more maddening.
I had reached the park and suddenly felt nothing other than very tired. So I slumped below a large and lush tree. A few children were giggling and playing happily of in the distance.
“Having fun?” Adrien’s voice mused and I jumped in alarm. “Sorry, I thought you were just ignoring me, since I have been yelling your name for the last few minutes.”
“Oh, my apologies, I didn’t hear you.” My eyes narrowed with suspicion, “so why aren’t you back there with your girlfriend?”
“One of her friends, Yvette, freaked out on us and I didn’t want to deal with all the drama so I left and followed you. I called your name many times but you never answered.”
I nodded but said nothing in response. I really didn’t know what to say.
“So what are you thinking about?”
“Aubrey.” Her name blurted out on accident and I quickly looked to the ground to avoid Adrien’s knowing glance.
“Oh, so she wasn’t just some picture-perfect person…”
“No, I am thinking about how good of a model she is.” I lied but it definitely did not sound convincing because Adrien just laughed.
“Sure… so how do you feel?”
“What?”
“How do you feel?” Adrien repeated.
“Honestly, I am not sure. My stomach feels knotted and my ribs ache and that if one thing goes wrong I might explode.”
“You guys didn’t…” He made an obscene gesture with his hands and I quickly smacked the back of his head.
“Of course not!”
“Well, I mean you never know…”
“Adrien.” I stopped him with a flick of the hand and he immediately became silent (but of course that will not last long).
“Well, maybe you’ll see her another time and you’ll feel better.”
“But that would probably make things worse. I mean we are strangers, so it would be a little awkward.”
“Okay then, don’t see her.” Adrien made things sound so simple but that still didn’t stop the throbbing pain that coursed through my body.
Adrien and I walked back in silence but parted once at my house. Of course daylight still overpowered the sky but I thought that I needed a good sleep. I closed the curtains so that no brightness could seep through.
(Author's Note: Hey did you all notice the thing above the Testriffic slogan? Version 8 is coming and I think this place will be much more updated and better! I cannot wait because there are a few glitches at the moment!)
