The Blank Canvas (4)
|
I smiled back as I watched her pose by the window. Aubrey seemed unsettled and a little tense which did not work well for my picture.
“Just relax…” I soothed as I set up the canvas on an easel.
“Right, sorry.” Aubrey apologized with a nervous chuckle.
“Relax…” I cooed before pressing the charcoal pen onto the blank canvas.
Her face materialized in my mind as I began to work my magic by slowly shaping the outline of her fair face. She stood very still as I looked up at her; her statuesque figure peered to be more settled than it had been before.
To my surprise she didn’t smile, she just stood there staring back at me with words that seemed could not escape her throat. I ignored the question and went back to drawing the small but prominent details on her face.
Her expression was thoughtful and cryptic at the same time. Unfathomable but compassionate; there is just so much more to this person.
The high-cheekbones that framed her face were not as hard as what was to come; the eyes; I always found eyes to be the hardest part of anyone. There is just so much detail and depth to them that I didn’t know where to start.
I began on the eyelids and they took me a good ten minutes. It was then onward to her green irises and the surrounding shades. I always found that the pupils were the most profound feature on any person because they added so much to the portrait.
Just looking at the drawing of her eyes made me still feel the intensity of her real ones; I had to look away for a brief moment to recollect my thoughts. I glanced back over to Aubrey and saw that the wind had ruffled a piece of her hair in front of her face.
She hesitated but eventually tried to push it aside but I stopped her with a frantic headshake.
“No! It looks good right there.” I said seeing the potential of making it a more natural than poised picture.
“Alright,” she replied through unmoving lips.
I moved down to the space lower but between her eyes and began to draw the bridge of her nose. The nose turned out to be the easiest thing to accomplish, but another more difficult part came next; her mouth.
The lips she wore were eased into a straight but luscious line. I almost found myself blushing as I pushed aside my personal thoughts. She noticed.
“What?” Her tone was self-conscious but I shook my head to assure her that nothing was wrong.
The curve of her round lips was fairly hard to master because there was just so much detail that had to be added to it to make it look complete.
Interrupting my own world, Aubrey sneezed and flashed me a rueful smile.
“Sorry.” She apologized but I once again shook my head to show her that there was no harm done. Maybe a few setbacks, but nothing I cannot recover from.
“It’s alright.” My voice was so quiet I didn’t even recognize it; probably because I usually never talk when I am in the zone.
“Sorry, but may we please take a break?” Aubrey implored abruptly and I could hear her breathing coming out rapidly.
“What’s wrong?” I asked setting the pencil down.
“It’s nothing; I just want a break, that’s all.”She brushed it aside and sat down at the foot of the window. Her expression unfathomable but I could see a trace of guilt.
“If you don’t want to do this anymore I completely understand.” I said with poorly suppressed disappointment.
“No. All I need is a break.” She assured with a small nod.
I watched her with intrigue as I tried to decipher her true emotions. Why had she stopped? What was wrong?
Walking over to her, I also sat below the window and began fiddling with a loose string on my baggy button-up shirt that was undone around my neck.
“Are you sure you are okay?”
“No need to worry about me, Olivier, I just needed a moment.” Aubrey guaranteed once more and she looked over at me and smiled meekly. “Sorry.”
“No need to apologize.”
“You know, you have to be the nicest person I have met in a long time. Most people are just so irritating and rude I sometimes wish them to Hell. But not you, even if you are somewhat of a stranger.” She said and I could tell that she was in deep thought.
“Well, thank you.”
“You are welcome.” Her voice was so impossibly lovely I found myself thinking thoughts that should never have been thought of.
We sat in silence for the longest time, but I knew we were both thinking different thoughts. I could not help but peek over at her through the corner of my eye every few minutes just to see if she was looking back.
“Have you ever done something that deep-down felt so right, but in actuality it was so very wrong?” The sudden sharpness to her voice made my eyes widen but I quickly composed myself before choosing my words carefully.
“Well, I think we all do that sometimes—”
“But have you?” She persisted and I nodded.
“All the time, but it never turned out that bad.” I couldn’t help but wonder what exactly she was getting at, but I didn’t want to be nosy so I let it be.
“But what if you knew there was way to end either way without slightly regretting that you didn’t do the other one?”
“Truthfully, I don’t think I have ever made that kind of decision.”
“That’s alright.” She finalized while she reached up and stood. I mimicked her movement and a smile finally broke through her lips. “I think we should get back to the drawing.”
I agreed as I made my way back over to the canvas. I once more picked up the pencil and placed it lightly back onto the canvas as Aubrey went back into her original pose.
I went back to drawing up the finishing touches to her angelic face and moved my way down her neck. It was craned slightly in a divergent direction so it took much more time than I had thought it would.
I blushed once more as I drew out the shapes of her breasts, but was able to hide it much better this time so she hadn’t noticed. The same intensity burned through me as it had the first time before we had taken a break.
I never thought it would be like this to get back my inspiration. There was a strange sensation that coursed through my body and I couldn’t help but smile sometimes at it. I really do hope I never lose it again.
Her figure was hour-glassed as I outlined the form of it. The curve of her hips was somewhat difficult but the roundness of her stomach was not. Her legs were crossed slightly at the knee as her arms pressed back against the window.
Her feet were naked as I realized she had kicked her shoes off once she had entered. I saved her golden curls for last. They swayed delicately over her shoulders and the small piece of it that had swung into her face was the finishing touch to my masterpiece.
Voila—I thought to myself as I smudged a few spots to get them to blend better.
“Finished!” I exclaimed and she smiled.
Aubrey strutted over to me with grace as she shook her head at the picture. I furrowed my brows as I tried to interpret her expression.
“You are truly amazing, Olivier.” She said with awe and I rolled my eyes.
“It helps to have a good model.”
“It might, but this is really… something…” Her eyes were locked onto the sketch and I noticed she was twitching back a smile.
“What?”
“My mother paid hundreds of dollars for a family portrait once, this is one is much better than that one.”
“And it costs less.” I added. “In fact, it’s free, but if you don’t mind… I kind of want to keep this one.”
“Oh of course, you did create it, and it is the best picture I have seen in a long time.” She said glimpsing back over toward the window and sighing at the brightly painted skies. “The end of the best day,” I heard her mumble beside me.
“You may stay longer if you like, or we could go somewhere, unless you’d like to leave.” I rambled on and she smiled.
“I’d like to stay a bit longer, if you don’t mind that is.”
“Of course not, I could gladly use the company.” Thinking of company made me remember Adrien. Strange, he hasn’t come all day; he’s probably busy.
Once again the room grew quiet as we both stared at the picture. I then felt her eyes rest on me and I couldn’t help but look back at her. The same incomprehensible expression lied across her face.
“Do you believe in fate or coincidences?” Aubrey asked and her forehead creased.
“I am not sure… fate probably because I did find my inspiration when I was at my lowest.” I explained and I could almost see a wave of sadness wash through her but I was unsure of what it was for.
“I think I do too,” was all she said before looking back at the bright scenery through the window.
(Author's Note: Has anybody else noticed the minor glitches in Testriffic?)
(When I was trying to update my picture the whole icon strangely disappeared. Also Yesterday's Favorites and the Top Users will not show up.)
(I hope these things will be fixed, but oh well "what can you do?")
(I hope that you have enjoyed this chapter and don't think that this relationship will develop quickly because it's not like they can just fall in love right away-- what's the fun in that?)

Nice! I like that their relationship isn't going to go so fast. Most people make that mistake in their stories. But the truth is, is that it doesn't happen that way in real life! :D :D |
