The kiss of the sun swept through my window the next morning and I knew I couldn’t laze around in my bed any longer. My arms flexed groggily as I stood up and glanced out the window. A regular day in Reims: children just waking, artists getting to work early and many just taking an early morning stroll in the streets.

I wasn’t aware of the day because I usually don’t keep track of the dates, but I had a certain feeling that it was later in the week.

I quickly pulled a cream-colored shirt off the floor and pushed my arms through it. My trousers were already in place, so all that was left were my shoes. Once my attire was taken care of I walked casually off of the second-story and onto the first.

There was nothing except broken slabs of wood on this floor so I usually had to watch where I stepped—especially if I am going barefoot. The squeaky door screeched as if it would break off the hinges but as usual it never did.

Another day had begun in the sameness. I didn’t even bother to bring my art supplies because I figured I would have no use for them. Maybe today I would just go to the pond and relax, get away from it all—especially Adrien.

I met Adrien when he was nine years old; he was watching me sketch a picture one day. He was so bright and bubbly I found comfort in his presence, I even was inspired to draw a picture of him. But he is now fifteen and is coming to me with “girl” problems.

I understand that his father abandoned his family, but I was not the most charming in my youth. I guess I was good-looking but I was always just so awkward. I was glad that my family and I had moved out to the country, which meant I didn’t have to deal with as much ladies.

I made sure to take the back roads, just in case I would run into Adrien. Many homeless people begged for money, but I had no coins to spare. If I did I would’ve given some to them in a heartbeat.

A small dog barked at a bird who was chirping in response. It almost made me laugh— almost. I turned my head so that I was looking directly at a corner and I saw something that made me froze.

Destin?” I asked the old man who flashed me a toothless smile.

“Why hello, Olivier, fancy seeing you here,” he replied through a cough.

“I thought you were in Paris.”

“I was,” Destin sighed, “but I decided to pay my hometown a visit for a bit.”

“Aren’t you going back?”

“Eventually,”

“What was it like in Paris?” I asked in wonderment but Destin simply shrugged.

“It’s… well you will find out when you go there.” He said with a sly smile as he left my question unanswered.

“Well, I will leave you be, but it was nice to see a familiar face.”

Destin nodded his head in response and I continued on to the pond. Nothing else that was somewhat interesting caught my eye along the way because it was the same as it usually was; boring and colorless.

The pond was past some thick vines that extended from the old trees that hung over the grassy path. A few times I paid little attention and got sliced by some thorns that jutted out across the vines, but this time I made sure to watch where I was putting my hand.

The area around the pond was awfully quiet this time; not something that usually happened. Frogs weren’t croaking, bugs weren’t buzzing and the breeze was even lighter. I tried to brush the feeling aside that I wasn’t the only one here, but it pulsed through me with every step.

I neared the pond cautiously and caught sight of nothing, so I decided that I was alone and I could just relax; even though I was at ill ease.  Sitting along the cattails I was about to whistle to lighten the mood, maybe I would—

“Oh, hello, sir, I didn’t see you there.” An apologetic voice said sheepishly behind me and I whirled around only to find a beautiful face staring at me.

“Uh… that’s alright.” I choked out of my sudden dry mouth.

Looking at her made everything around me enhance. The carving on the barks of the trees grew more prominent while the earth beneath me suddenly became alive! I could almost see the small insects making their way to wherever they were planning on going, and the blades of grass rustled from the light wind.

It felt as if I was reborn! Every breath I took rasped out louder as a smile came across my lips. My body even had a sharp tingle spreading throughout it, making it harder for my thoughts to clarify.

Her eyes were the brightest shade of green while the voluptuous curves of her mouth puckered in a line as she watched me with interest. Her arms were encircled around her dainty waist as the golden ringlets of her hair swayed passed her shoulders.

“Are you alright?” She asked after a minute and I realized I must’ve looked extremely strange from her angle.

“Yes, yes I am.” Unlike all the other times when I was asked that, I was able to speak the truth.

“Well, I was just taking a stroll down the street and I came upon this place, is it alright if I stay here as well as you? Or would you prefer to be alone?”

“No, its fine, you may stay.”

I knew from the moment I had laid eyes on this fair woman that she was it: my inspiration. Just the fact that knowing it was back once more made me giddy with excitement! Think of what I could draw, what I could finally create!

The wonderment of my sudden potential overwhelmed me and I remembered that I had forgotten to look away from her, so once again she was staring at me as if I was mad.

“Sorry I was just thinking…” I apologized with an awkward smile.

“Oh… okay.”

It was silent for the longest time as we both stared off in different directions. I was unable to say anything without making myself look like an utter fool so I said nothing. I finally realized that I should probably draw her, or my inspiration could leave.

But how could I just ask to draw her? I know I have done it before but this time it is like a whole another thing! I snook a peek at her at her once more and was once again breathless from the possibilities.

She had a nice body but I knew there was more to her than just that. There was so much depth in her green eyes that it had me wondering who exactly she was.

“My name is Olivier.” I blurted out and she smiled meekly.

“Aubrey.”

“That’s a nice name.”

“Thank you, yours is also a nice one.” Aubrey replied and our eyes met for a long time. I suddenly found myself thinking and wanting to say things that I would never do but for some reason they just poured out.

“I want to draw you.”

“Draw… me…?” She asked with a creased forehead.

“Sorry, but I just see so much potential in drawing you.” I left out many things because I felt that they weren’t necessary. “But only if it alright with you…” I added carefully so that I wouldn’t seem so overbearing.

I could see her pondering for a moment with pursed lips but all the while her eyes never left mine. Finally a big smile broke through her face and I couldn’t help but smile back.

“Well I have never really been drawn before so yes, of course.”

“I cannot see why that is, I mean you are…” I stopped myself before I made a foolish comment; think of how she would react if a stranger just called her beautiful! My red face gave me away but she still stayed calm.

“Well, when would you like to do this?” Aubrey asked.

“Right now… if that’s alright with you…” I answered automatically and she nodded.

“I have nothing to do and I don’t really want to go home so now would be perfect.”

“I have to warn you though; I tend to take my time.”

“All I have is time.”

We both stood up in unison and I realized that she had somewhat of expensive attire on; like Jacqueline had and I felt a surge of criticism as I thought of what I was wearing.

“What’s wrong?” She asked but I shook my head.

“Nothing…”

“Well, okay… don’t you need supplies?”

“Yes, but they are at my home so if you’d like to walk with me there, I can get it. Or we could—”

“That sounds great.”

I nodded and took the lead through the thick trees. She followed close behind as we emerged from the forest and began walking toward the city.

“You don’t mind taking alleys right?” I asked while stopping for a brief second.

“Well, they aren’t the nicest of things… but if that is what you usually take I am up for it.”

I understood that she wouldn’t like to see the grime and poverty but the alleys were faster so I nodded and picked up my pace again. We went through a long dark alley that many people begged money in but we just ignored them.

Their faces were so worn and dirty that I could’ve cried, but I knew better than to give out money to a group of people—even though I didn’t have any money. They will tear you apart for it. Aubrey must’ve known this too because like me she brushed right past them.

We neared my home and I felt a self-conscious feeling about letting her in. I didn’t want her to scorn at my low-class room, but she kept on following through the dark lower floor. I almost tripped over a board but eventually found the creaky steps that led to my room.

She paused in the doorway to my room and looked at my items with a wondering expression. She didn’t look disappointed, but interested.

“May you draw me here, by that window?” Aubrey asked gesturing to the ledge below the window.

“If this is where you want to be drawn, then of course.”

I readied my supplies as she made her way over to my uncurtained window. Aubrey swiftly looked down at the streets and turned to me with a smile.

“You have a great view… all I see from my window is the snobby neighbors.”

“So you are from upper Third Street.” I mused flatly.

“Yes, it is a real drag. This place is just wonderful though.”

“What do you mean by wonderful? Down here it is all poor and up where you live… everyone has everything!”

“Not everything. I mean look at you,” she gestured to the charcoal pencil I was sharpening. “You can draw and I can only go to parties!” Aubrey looked back out the window and a strong wind rusted through her hair. “I bet it looks beautiful at night.”

“Yes, yes it does.” I said moving from my sharpening to find a blank canvas. Once I found one I turned back to her, “ready whenever you are.”

She whipped around to face me and smiled. “Ready.”

(Author's Note: Well I will not complain about rates anymore, however, I'd still like to have them so rate after you're done-- only if you liked it though because that wouldn't make much sense if you hated it and rated it because I asked...)

(Anyway... I will just tell you ahead of time that this story will be longer than a few that I have had in the past. My goal is somewhere near 15 or 20 chapters... but not all goals are achieved... that doesn't mean I won't try.)

(Oh and by the way... these are real French names in case you are wondering. I look my names up in baby names so yeah... a user messaged me asking if they really were...)
