The Blank Canvas (2)

Romance Created on 5-16-08 Views(176) Story Rating G

After minutes of running I began to feel a surge of despondency as I realized I probably would never find this woman. First off, I have no clue about her appearance and secondly, she was probably extremely far ahead of me.

Abruptly, I skidded to a stop and stared down at the ground.

“Well it was worth a shot.” I mumbled to myself as I turned back around to go back down the street.

From this angle I could see Adrien plowing uphill with heavy breaths going in and out of his mouth. He caught my eye and flashed me a quizzical expression. I knew what he was wondering but I didn’t say anything.

“What are you doing?” He asked once we were fairly close to each other.

“Going home,” I replied simply and his shoulder hooked mine so that I spun around.

“But what about…?”

“It doesn’t matter, there are plenty other woman in Reims worthy of being my model.”

“Yeah, but none of them able to spark inspiration,” Adrien persisted.

“What makes this one different than those? How do you know that she is special?” I sneered before shoving away from him and going back down Third Street.

Adrien said nothing but out of the corner of my eye I saw him sulking with a jutted out lip. I wasn’t in the mood to apologize so I strutted on, not even caring where that woman had gone. For the longest time, Adrien actually was able to shut his mouth, but I knew what he was thinking. I could feel the grim thoughts radiating from him and onto me.

Finally he went down a street adjacent to Third Street and I was all alone. I decided to go pick up my supplies off of the road— if they were still there that is, you never know about the poor people. The charcoal pencils were where I had left them and so was the canvas but I didn’t bother to pick that hideous object up.

I suddenly felt nothing other than very tired, which isn’t surprising since I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in weeks. Rather than wandering the streets, I went to my small home.  My home wasn’t really much, but it was enough for me.

It was a one-room place above an abandoned store. I had hung a dark red curtain over the windowsill for some privacy when I slept. But sometimes I opened it up to let the starry skies seep in. A comfy divan lied off the right of the window, just calling for me to fall to sleep on it.

I threw everything to the ground and lazily fell down onto the bed. Maybe I could finally get the sleep I had been longing for, for quite some time.

I breathed heavily before undergoing into a deep sleep. A dream erupted from my mind and I could see everything in it flashing between black and white. The dream was meaningless, but nonetheless, it was nice to simply see a place far from reality.

I don’t exactly know how long I was entranced in my slumber, but when a heavy shove exploded from my shoulder. I woke up in a small shriek, only to find Adrien leaning by me with a wild expression.

“Olivier! I know where she is…”

“I don’t care!” I snapped as I shifted my body away from Adrien whom was now jostling my shoulder.

“Trust me, you should care. Please! All you have to do is look at her; in fact you could just look out your window. It turns out she turned off alley from Third Street, I saw her when I was strolling around… and I brought her here to see you… just look out the window!” Adrien demanded as he picked me up and ripped open the curtain.

I opened my eyes long enough for the scorching sunlight to burn them. As I rubbed the pain away, I began to notice a fair woman kicking the ground below. I knew it had to be her.

Brunette waves hung past her shoulders and even though her eyes were hidden from the distance, I knew they had to have been beautiful. The attire she was sporting looked very expensive and that had me wondering if she was even from around here. She’s probably from the upper-class area up the hill.

“Her name is Jacqueline.” Adrien said through a smile. He nudged my shoulder playfully but I paid no attention.

I quickly smoothed out my hair and clothes so that I at least looked presentable before I dashed through the building and out to the startling radiance below. Jacqueline looked a little surprised but smiled which proved she was kind.

“Your little friend told me you needed to see me… frankly, sir, I do not understand why you do for I have never met you before.”

“This may sound strange, but I want to draw you.”

Getting a closer look at her I noticed not just her divineness, but the fact that she had unleashed it: my inspiration. I looked into her ice eyes and nothing more than I usually do. Maybe it would take a lot more than just looks to unleash my inspiration.

“Draw me?” Her forehead creased as she self-consciously wrapped her arms around her expensive-looking dress. “Why ever for?”

“Oh, you just seem like a good model.” I lied casually, not wanting to embarrass myself with my true thoughts.

“Well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt, however I do not want to be out too late.” She warned before smiling warmly. “By the way, I am Jacqueline.”

“Olivier.”

“Well, Olivier, where would you like to do this?”

I suddenly realized that I had to get a whole new canvas, as well as my supplies. I gestured for Jacqueline from the window and I knocked his head before returning back to my model.

“Is there a certain place you’d like to draw this? The park, forest, by a rock...?” I asked and she thought for a minute.

“Are there any fine-looking trees around here?”

“Well, yes there is this—”

“Perfect.” She interrupted as I lead her near the park.

A large weeping willow stood at the heart of the park and she easily sat down beside it. I got my supplies ready, but I glanced up at her only to find the wind rippling through her hair.

“Have you been drawing long?” She asked after an awkward silence.

“Ever since I can remember,”

“I have always wanted to be an artist but I am stuck being a pianist.”

“That’s still pretty interesting… are any good?”

“I guess,” Jacqueline said through a sigh.

Another awkward silence overcame us and I didn’t even notice her get up for I had been too engrossed in sharpening my charcoal pencil.

“I have to go.” Her voice was thick with impatience and I gave her a confused look.

“We haven’t even started…”

“Sorry it’s just I have to be somewhere.”

“Yeah, that’s not surprising… rich girls are just so busy.” I was somewhat angry at the fact I had wasted my time sharpening my pencil when there was never going to be anything to draw.

“Look this has nothing to do with my wealth.” She spat angrily. “I just simply have to leave. I am sorry about your picture, but this was sprung onto me at the last minute and I have to be elsewhere.”

Jacqueline strutted toward Third Street as I began packing my supplies. I saw Adrien emerge from the bushes, but I had suspected that he had followed Jacqueline and me.

“What went wrong?” He whimpered.

“She just wasn’t the one, besides she had somewhere to be.”

“Well, dang, I thought I had her this time. Well, maybe it isn’t going to be some woman whom I could never have a chance with…”

“Look I don’t know what my inspiration will be. A someone or a something… I honestly do not know, but either way I will search for it. Until then, I will go sleep in my room.” I left Adrien standing alone in the park as I returned to my home.

Darkness licked across the horizon as I let my red curtain hang low. I wanted to see the night sky tonight for various reasons, but mostly because I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep either way so it would be nice to see something beautiful.

Jacqueline had been great in the looks department, but she hadn’t been the one to restore my inspiration. In fact, I now am beginning to doubt if I ever will get it back.

But as they say ‘tomorrow is a new day’ so maybe I will be much luckier. Just maybe…

(Author's Note: Okay the last ch. only had 14 rates... now I will continue but that is the lowest amount of rates on a story I have had in a long time.)

(This story is going to be my best, I can feel it so I believe it deserves much more rates)

(If you are going to want to be posted on this story, then I would recommend you rate.)

(I am taking my time with the love affliction because I want this story to last a bit longer than my last few... so the picture of the woman on my page will not be introduced for a bit longer... but don't worry it won't take too long.)
