Romance Created on 5-10-08 Views(243) Story Rating G

I stared at Grandmary for the longest minute and grudgingly crossed my arms across my chest. I hated my good for nothing mother and I had no desire to call her.

“Why?” I whimpered but she just rolled her eyes.

“Natalie, I want you to call her and talk to her. Just give her a chance, you know she loves you.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Do I?”

“Please, do it for me.” Grandmary plead with a helpless look in her eyes that made my whole body fill with sorrow.

“Fine.” I clip out. “But it doesn’t change anything.” I snuffed down the stairs so that I could get the phone and dial the number I dreaded.

I picked up the light object with caution, dialed the number, and closed my eyes as the ringing droned through my ears. She knew Grandmary was sick, but she didn’t come because she didn’t want to see me: I knew that was the reason why she was sitting pleasantly at her cozy home.

“Hello?” A small voice asked on the other side of the line. I immediately recognized it.

                “Hi Mom,”

“Oh, Natalie it’s you.” I could hear the disappointment echoing off of her.

“Yeah, who were you expecting, one of your male lapdogs?”My tone transformed into a sarcastic sneer which only made the tension worse.

                “What do you want?”

“Nothing actually, I was forced to call you.”

“How surprising, if you want me to come out there you’re wasting your time. I am a very busy woman so make this quick.”

“Yeah, you’re so busy sexing up Seattle, ripping families apart, and not caring about your mother!” I accuse but hear nothing on the other end.

A click overcame the silence and the phone went dead. I felt somewhat triumphant as I placed the phone back onto its correct spot and pranced back upstairs to Grandmary. She had somehow managed to maneuver herself over to the window so that she could see the fresh outdoors.

“That was quick.” Grandmary mused with an accusing glance at me.

“What? She didn’t want to talk either.” I reply defensively but she still kept the hard look in my direction.

“Even if she did, you still wouldn’t have given her a chance. You have to promise me something… you will forgive her one day. Promise me!”Her suddenly strong voice shook with authority and I was almost scared to say no.

“F-Fine,” I stammer nervously and her hostility settles. Gliding back over to her bed, she plopped down with a sigh and stared at me with an unfathomable expression.

“Thank you.” Her tone was at ill ease but, even so, she was now calmed down.

“Tell me Grandmary; tell me what is troubling you.” I practically beg and she looks deeply into my eyes.

“Come; sit next to me, Nat.” Grandmary motions to the empty space on her rather large bed and I obediently sit there. She grabbed my hand and I winced at the feeling of her frail skin.

“Tell me what you see when you look at me, Nat.”

I look at her kindly in the eyes and try to put my thoughts into words.

“A woman, a mysterious woman who was in her day very nice to look at,” I say with a sincere smile but she pushes for more. “I see a sad person who has endured so much pain that she won’t enlighten anyone with the details because she doesn’t want to hurt them also. She is very kind and loving…” I trail off because her eyes begin to well up.

“You could see all that?” She asked mostly to herself, and then she abruptly motioned to her bookshelf. “Please bring me that dark green-leathered journal over there.”

I eagerly jump off the bed and bring the journal over to Grandmary. I was hoping that it was a diary that she had engraved her secrets in, but when she opened it all my hopes drifted away.

It was blank.

“My father gave me this when I was your age to document my life in, but I never got around to using it. I think that I now will.” Her voice was barely above a whisper as she picked up a black inked pen on her nightstand.

I secretly peered over to see what she was writing but saw nothing. I quickly looked up at her face to see narrow hazel eyes staring back at me.

“Excuse me, Miss Nosy, but I’d like to do this in piece.” Grandmary snubbed and I left the room with a humph.

Why does she have to be so goddamn secretive? I thought to myself as I trudged down the narrow spiral staircase.

I went out to greet the cloudy day which made my mood even more cross. Lazily, I plopped down under a cherry blossom tree and glared at Grandmary’s window—which was now curtained.

I was slightly hoping that Jack or Sam would come by but I knew that they were probably busy working in the woods and it would be unnecessary to try and find them. So I sat alone with nothing to do except think about unimportant things.

Then, out of the blue, a man with a suit came walking up the side of the house and I stared at him quizzically.

“Excuse me, miss, but I am here to see Mary Sinclair… she called yesterday and said that it was urgent for me to see her. By the way I am Don Moore, her lawyer.” He held out the hand that was free from his suitcase and I stood up to shake it.

“Natalie, she’s upstairs.” I led him through the house and knocked on Grandmary’s door.

“Yes?” Her voice was guarded and I heard the closing of a book.

“Don Moore, your lawyer is here.”

She welcomed him in and I let them discuss whatever it was in private. I didn’t want to know why he was here because I didn’t want to hear the truth. Of course I had a good idea, but I wanted to deny it for as long as I could.

It wasn’t until dinner when Mr. Moore finally left the cottage and Grandmary beckoned me upstairs. I excused myself from Sam and Jack and they continued bickering about the stupidest things.

Grandmary seemed content went I entered her room and she once again gestured me to sit by her. The journal was no longer in sight and I was silently pouting about her secrecy.

“I am seventy eight now, Nat” –she had my mother at an older age because my mother was the youngest—“and we both know that my time here is not going to be for much longer. Natalie, I need to warn you ahead of time that not all things will work out as you might’ve hoped but please accept how they do, can you do that for me Natalie?”

“I have no idea about what you mean, and frankly I don’t want to.”

“But can you accept them?” She pressed.

“Fine, I will accept whatever it is you mean.” I had a good idea about what she meant, but I was still under denial that she could ever leave.

“Thank you, Natalie.” I hated it when she used my full name, especially not when she drawled it out in that overly sweet voice of hers. “You may leave, that is all I needed.” Grandmary said abruptly and I felt taken aback.

                “Well then, fine.”

I emerge into the kitchen only to find Sam and Jack both done. I sighed as I once again had to clean up the table and put the dishes away.

I was so angry at Grandmary that I decided I could even hate her. She never told me anything and made me promise to do things that don’t make much sense.

“I hate you.” I mutter under my breath but I knew that when it came out it was an immediate lie.

“You hate me?” Sam’s surprised voice made me whirl around to see him picking up his watch. “I just came back here to get it…”

“No I don’t hate you; I was just grumbling lies to myself.”

“Alrighty then, I have to go back and help Jack. There was a lot of work to be done today.” Sam left after he flashed me a quick smile.

A few weeks passed and the place stayed the same. I moped around all day to find something to do, Sam and Jack worked, and Grandmary locked herself in her room and wouldn’t even let me in for a while. She mostly only did at meal times but every day she looked worse.

How could there be nothing wrong with her? I found myself thinking one night. A full moon blazed through my windowsill and I didn’t even bother to curtain it because I wouldn’t be able to sleep either way.

“Natalie?” A voice whispered and I jumped in surprise.

Grandmary was standing by the side of my bed in her ivory night gown. Her long white hair was loose from its usual bun and her body was shaking.

“Grandmary, what are you doing?” I ask as I hop over to her aid and support her frail bones.

“I want you to take me outside by the lake.”

I didn’t want to refuse her request especially when she was in that critical of a state. As I guided her outside and down the pearly steps I saw a small smile spread across her lips.

“It’s best at night, isn’t it Nat?” She asked while she put her weak legs into the cold water. I mimicked her movement but still felt weary about the whole situation.

“Yes it is. Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Never better,” Grandmary replied and I noticed that she had dug her hands into the moist earth.
