(2015)

It took three years for the Nuclear Plague to storm through the nation. Killing some but sickening most.

Hot and cold flashes switching violently within the bodies, sore rashes covering every inch of skin, and the flows of blood escaping the throats; these are the symptoms which we had to undergo.

Hospitals were no use, for the doctors were also experiencing the symptoms. There was no place to go other than your bed.

Then the sickness disappeared. No one knew what had happened or how but the plague literally vanished.

That was when we first found out about the immune. They may have been untroubled by all of the disparity in the world, but something happened to them.

They changed.

But they all looked the same: ashen hair, fair skin, golden eyes, and wings.

Yes, wings.

Their DNA transformed into something else entirely and they became a new breed of humans: Mutants.

However, they were called other various names: angels, freaks, or more commonly, things.

In some countries they were being worshipped because of their resemblance to angels, but in most they were being ill treated. Scientists were now trying to test on them, so that they could find out what exactly was in their bodies that made the react to the plague in such ways.

Months after the plague had vanished; schools and other buildings began to rebuild over the chaotic rubble. Soon they were up and running and I once again had to wake up early for school.

And that was when I first noticed Elena Rathborne.

I remembered her as the class brain that looked like a regular girl next door. She had always been pretty, but that first day I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

Like the other immune, she too had changed.

Her long waves of brown hair turned into billows of white-gold, while her eyes once muddy brown, scorched with topaz, and her back that was once just carrying a spine, had white feathered wings bursting out of it. And somehow, her face had changed, it looked much more angular.

I took a brief moment to scan the room. The rest of my senior classmates were also watching her with curiosity and intrigue. Even the teacher’s jaw was flung open.

Elena was aware of all the wondering eyes but she kept her head low, but that didn’t make any of them look away, not even me. Even so, I could see a delicate shade of rose painting her chalky cheeks.

Taking her usual spot in front of me, she glided onto the desk with grace and finally tilted up so that she could see the front of the room. I now had a full view of her wings that had blustered by me with precision.

The feathers stuck out in jagged points that appeared shiny in the bright ceiling lights. I had a sudden urge to reach out and stroke it but rather than embarrassing myself, I shoved my hands under my desk and balled them into fists.

Her smell even changed. It wasn’t any perfume fragrance; it was like a natural odor that you would most likely smell in the outdoors. I tried to get a whiff of it while being nonchalant but I was afraid that somebody would catch me and taunt me about it.

I wasn’t exactly the most popular kid on the block, I was really just average. I didn’t really want to be popular because the groups of people that are considered popular aren’t the nicest people around. Some are nice, but most are not.

And I looked average. Shaggy caramel colored hair, dark blue eyes, and a wiry but muscular built. Nothing special, just an average teen who would rather stare at some girl, than talk to her; I am extremely pathetic.

It took the teacher a good minute before he could actually recollect what he was originally going to say but when he did it came out in that boring dull voice (like always).

“Welcome back class,” Mr. Brown droned out, “It is nice to see that most of you were unharmed during the long break. Now I remember exactly what we were working on before the outbreak, but I have decided to make this day a little slow. Almost like a catch-up day, so you can reread the chapter to get the gist of things again, chat with your friends, or do something on your own quietly.”

I could tell that he just wanted to sleep at his desk, per usual, while we did stuff on our own. I remembered that most of the days before the plague had happened were what he liked to call “catch-up days”.

The classroom was bubbling with energy as friends talked about their experiences of being sick (even though the symptoms were exactly the same as everyone else’s).

“… half… oh no way… really…?” I heard Angie Kayne’s voice above all of the others, mostly because she has a very large vocal range.

She had asked me out one time, but I politely declined. Angie was too blonde, too icy blonde for my taste (snobby, loud and bossy is definitely not a turn-on for me).

“Hey Mase,” One of my friend’s, Erik, said to me as he moved from his corner desk to the empty one beside me.

“Hey,” I reply with a light smile and he raises an eyebrow at Elena’s back.

“So you can like fly now, eh Elena?” Erik questioned obnoxiously.

It was only then when I realized that she had her hands caressing both of her ears.

“Could you all not talk so loud?” She hissed with an annoyed glare burning back at Erik and I. I thought she was being extremely odd. Everyone, except for Angie, was talking in either a regular or monotone. “And to give the obvious answer to your question; yes I can fly.”

“Can you read minds too?” Erik whispered with a smirk; probably thought she wouldn’t hear him. I didn’t think she would either but when an eye roll came across her face I was proven wrong.

You honestly think I can read minds? Stupid imbecile…” Elena muttered while she unclasped her pallid hands from her ears.

“Well I wasn’t sure; I mean there are many unknown qualities about your kind.”

I stared at him with rage and tried very hard not to smack him right then and there. I could feel my whole body clenching as a snarl whipped out of the corner of my mouth. I don’t know why the words he had said affected me so much, I mean I didn’t even know this Elena Rathborne.

“SHUT YOUR FAT MOUTH!” I bellow and the rest of the room silenced. Mr. Brown stirred but startlingly purred back to his normal rhythm.

Elena looked as surprised as Erik as he stared at me with an astounded expression. Even Angie, had stopped her loudness to hear the drama over by the corner.

“Dude chill,” Erik said while backing up a step.

“Er…” I couldn’t think of anything and I suddenly felt nothing other than extremely embarrassed.

Breaking the silence, the bell toned. Saved by the bell, how cliché. I gathered my materials quickly and tried to bolt out of the room as fast as I could. I felt a light tap on my shoulder, followed by a dainty voice.

“You’re Mason, right?” Her heavenly voice asked and I tried very hard not to sound like an utter moron.

“Y-Yes I am.” I criticized myself after my stammer escaped my lips.

“I thought so… anyway thanks for doing that back there. Honestly, I thought I was going to cry.” She admitted with a sheepish smile and I couldn’t help but smile also. But then seriousness masked over her once cheery face.

“Why did you do it? I don’t even think you know me.”

                “I don’t know, and you’re right I don’t know you.”

But I want to.”—I didn’t add that though.

“Well, whatever the reason was, thanks Mason.” I liked the way she said my name; she made it sound like music.

I watched her walk ahead of me and into another classroom. I didn’t realize that I was just standing still in the hallway until a brawny junior plowed me to the ground which knocked all of my books onto the floor.

I glared at the back of the mountainous figure while I tried to pick up my belongings.

(Author's Note: It may have a few similarities to I Am Legend but this is going to be a lot more different. I don't know what my inspiration was, but one sleepless night I just began writing and then the story outline for this appeared.)

(enjoy!)
