1. What could Seth have to tell her that could possibly change her mind about him? She had been hurt when he had first turned her down, devastated when she had heard him talking about her later, but she had dealt with it. She had learned to accept the fact she wouldn’t find the right guy, he didn’t exist.
2. Then she had met Dominic, and they were perfect together. Life wouldn’t be like it was now if Seth had turned out different. And she was happy. Nothing good could come from this meeting. She suspected he was either out to try and hurt Dominic, or he would make her feel guilty for not listening to him.
3. She climbed out of her car and Seth was at her side before she grabbed her purse. A little surprised to look up and see him standing there, she laughed nervously.
4. “Hi.” He said smiling down at her. “I’m glad you decided to come.” He took her arm and shut the car door behind her.
5. “Hey Seth, We need to make this quick. And this is your only shot so make sure you say everything you want to say, okay?”
6. He took a hold of her hand a little tighter and led her to a table near the back where it wasn’t as busy. He pulled out her chair and waited until she was seated before sitting across from her. “Well, its simple Grace, I love you. I know you feel the same for me…”
7. “Felt,” Grace interrupted, “at least I thought I felt love. Seth,” She paused, “What are you trying to do? I’m happy, why did you wait until now to tell me about any feelings you had.”
8. “Have,” It was his turn to correct her, “And I think you might still feel the same way about me. I didn’t know I would lose you to Dominic. I have to get things straight before you’re led down a path that will probably end up hurting you.”
9. “Seth, I did like you. Two years ago!” She emphasized the last sentence. “But what I thought I felt is nothing compared to what I feel toward Dominic.” She took a deep breath before continuing, “Do you even remember what happened? You told me you weren’t dating any one at the moment, and then later you told your friends I was crazy to even think I had a chance with you.”
10. “I really am sorry you heard that.” When Grace just shook her head, Seth looked down at his hands on the table, studying them intently as the waitress set out two glasses of water and handed them menus. “I was stupid Grace.” It was all he said.
11. “That’s your only explanation?”
12. “I wasn’t expecting it. I was shy when you asked me, then I guess I felt I had to defend myself from the other guys. Couldn’t let them know I lost it in front of a girl. I just wanted to play it off like it didn’t mean anything to me.” He looked up finally, regret clear in his eyes. “I wouldn’t have dreamt of hurting you. If I had known you were listening I wouldn’t have said that Gracie.”
13. Grace just stared at him. He stared back for awhile then started squirming in his seat.
14. “Why are you telling me this now Seth? I am happy.”
15. “Not for long. Dom isn’t what he seems to be Grace. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
16. “Dom won’t hurt me.”
17. “So you’re okay that he is going back to Lithuania?” He asked sounding shocked.
18. Grace tried to cover the look of shock that came over her face. Seth took the opportunity to continue his rant. “And from what I heard he isn’t going to be coming back. He hasn’t even told you has he?”
19. Seth reached across the table and took her hands, using her shocked silence as an opportunity to scoot closer. “He was just going to leave you, hurt you. I would never do that to you. You deserve better than that.” He squeezed her hand and leaned in.
20. He was too close, she thought. Too close, she should say something but she was at a loss for words. She couldn’t get her mind to stop spinning from the circle of thoughts about Dom leaving her. That just couldn’t be right, Dom told her everything. Seth was wrong, mistaken, trying to hurt Dom; he was too close, getting closer. He was leaning in for a kiss; she tried to break free of his hold on her hands.
21. “Grace?” The voice was cold and accusing. She looked up to see Dominic staring at the two of them looking very cozy at the table. She tried again to pull back but Seth didn’t let go easily.
22. “Dom, I…” Grace tugged her hands back hard, breaking the contact. Dominic turned and walked out of the diner. She stood up to follow and Seth grabbed her hand one more time turning her to look at him.
23. “Just let him go Gracie, its better this way.”
